points on a licence

I've got 3 SP30's on my licence thanks to the big brother nanny state control freak Socialists love of speed cameras (21/08/04 - 05//03/07 - 21/07/08 ), and am looking at hiring a car. I want to use AVIS but they stipulate 6 points maximum on a licence and mine is showing 9 points. However according to the Directgov website points can be removed after 4 years. This means that i've really got 3 active points on my licence. But do car hire firms see it like this or are the points on the licence until they are removed? The top and bottom of this is that to remove the 6 points costs £20 which is a ****ing joke.

Has anyone got any experience on this?

Sorry, never had any so can't help :smug:

Re the 'nanny state' jibe, have you considered that you have them because you broke the law ? The cameras are clearly signed, as are the speed limits. Perhaps you should go to specsavers ?

A typical Socialist attitude.

That's not really true is it, even now there are plenty around that are far from clearly signed, some of Dunes points are dated from years ago when things were even worse.

And are you telling me you have never been driving along and suddenly thought 'what's the speed limit here'? Speed limits seem to chop & change so often these days, on one stretch of road you can be in a 60 limit one minute, then 40, then 50, etc.

For my first 3 points I ever received, I saw the mobile camera up ahead in the lay-by, checked my speed and was happy I was within the limit so carried on as I was. I’d have put money on it being a 40 limit, but it turned out to be a 30 and I was doing 38, doh!

on the A36 north of salisbury there is a section of 30 limit, which becomes 40 for about 100 yards, and then returns to 30. If you wanted to design limits to trap people, you couldn't do better.

my route between plymouth and southampton used to be loaded with gatsos......many are now covered up...good good

I used to be amazed at how many of them are in Plymouth when you drive in and out of the city, litrally one after another!

They're a car hire company. No problem.

They'll just charge you an extra un-necessary hidden fee for checking with DVLA or whatever it is called this week.

Car Hire 3000 - can be random who you get from but have always found them at least 20% cheaper than going direct

Dune, you have 3 points only. DVLA doesn't send you a new licence once the points have expired so you should be OK.

28 years of driving, average 20k miles per year; never had a speeding fine, never had a parking ticket. You may read into that what you wish.

Driving Miss Daisy? I seem not to have done so "well" as you, and in the 22 years of driving, I have managed a mere 12 points, 3 x 3 for speeding (all SP50s).

Im a type 1 diabetic under very good control. Last 3 months my adverage reading was 7.8 (very good). Been type 1 since l was 5 some 36 years now.Had to move a Sofa for my sister so l went to hire a van from U-drive and they said a big fat "NO". Was a bit stuck as need to move it as the new one was turning up. I drivr some 15 thousand miles a year had one speeding ticket/fine 4 years ago. No points. A young guy said l was to greater risk. So we booked a man and a van out of the Daily echo for £50. They moved it and pulled there Boll--cks out. So U-drive lost not mine.

In this country the principle applies that driving a vehicle on the public highway is a privilege, not a right. Consequently, drivers have a duty to show a certain level of responsibility and care towards other road users. Speed cameras target those who choose to flout these principles, those who wilfully endanger the lives of other people through their selfish behaviour.

Breaking the speed limit is breaking the law. it doesn't make you clever or important. it makes you a criminal.

Utter rubbish. Driving to the road conditions makes you a safe driver. Every time I was caught for speeding I was driving perfectly safely. On one occasion I was coming back from a night match at Bolton in the early hours of the morning and got flashed doing 40 in a 30 and there was no other cars on the road. You control freak Socialists always have to look at things in such a black and white way, wheras I prefer varying shades of brown. Metaphorically speaking of course.

Every driver that has ever been caught by a speed camera claims that they were driving safely and shouldn't have been fined. They generally also claim that fixed cameras are a money making exercise imposed by a Labour Government to 'tax' the honest motorist. It's quite simple, if you don't speed past them you don't get fined, and they don't make money. If you knowingly drive at 40 past a camera in a 30 zone, and get caught, tough ! You gambled and lost.

Speed cameras are all about taxation and nanny state control. They are a perfect example of what Socialism is all about.

And, if you had gone past the cameras at a LEGAL speed, the 'nanny state' would be out of pocket, wouldn't it ! Therefore, I can only assume you were happy to take the risk, knowing and accepting the potential consequences of your actions. On behalf of the 'socialist nanny state' I graciously acknowledge your generous contribution towards funding the welfare system, and warmly thank you for your altruism.

Driving since 1962. two SP30's, both within 30 minutes of each other. Same spot, same cop. never saw the cop for the first, and too late for the second. Been like Badger16 ever since. Bloody lucky. !

Just rang up avis to check with them and they said it will be fine, but then enquired about the excess on collision damage waiver, theft & damage to windows, tyres, undercarriage and the roof. £20/day. They can f/ck right off. This explains why their price was the best I could find. No wonder these hire car firms ask for it when you pick the car up. It was about £50 for 3 weeks in Tenerife.

Back to searching.

It isn't the nanny state that drives the need for speed cameras. It's the capitalist state. They are there to make money. Thatcher's Britain and all that. But that would probably confuse dune so it's safer just to blame it on the liberal elite.

Nice try to make excuses for the big brother Socialist state. However everyone knows that since the party of freedom and civil liberties (aka the Conservatives) came to power there has been a a reduction in speed cameras.

Because, tunnel-visioned one, the police forces and local authorities can't afford to run them, thanks to the Tory cuts! So they're switching them off!

True, but that still doesn't mean their original purpose wasn't to make money, which is at the heart of a capitalist society.

I'm glad you don't get points on your licence for parking tickets or I'd be well and truely fooked. I'm sensible and only go a bit faster where I feel safe in the knowledge that I'm not going to get caught and I'm not going to run over school children. Unlike Dune who sounds like he speeds up outside of schools.

I don't speed through villages or near schools. Like I said I drive at a speed suitable to the road conditions.

Gradually the 'faster and deeper' cuts are slowing down and becoming shallow. The number of U-turns by this coalition is breathtaking. You should try reading some of the tweets and blogs on here (although of course it's an unashamedly anti-tory site)

Go on - have a look. It'll make you a more rounded individual.

The worst stretch of cameras in the UK is surely the old A4 going through Slough and onto towards Farnham Common and Marlow. There must about 15-20 speed and traffic light cameras in under 2 miles of road! Mind you, Slough is an utter toilet.
