JackFrost Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 1. The fans that protested against Hoddle in 2004 to admit to what they did. 2. To explain why they put the club in jeopardy. 3. To explain why they could not admit to their mistake earlier and to admit they would like to airbrush the whole episode away. Unitl this happens I will continue to hold high the torch of truth for all Saints fans in the future. The reasons for the sad decline of our club must be remembered so that we never make a similar mistake again. LostBoys Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 I do not agree that we would have gone down with Dave Jones as manager. I am glad Cardiff have booted him out as they will be weaker without him. OldNick Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 Jones is a bottler. We would have gone down under his managership. Saints were only saved because of the appointment of Hoddle, who could have saved us again in 2004. However, the vocal minority knew better and sacrificed our premiership status to satisfy their own egos. Lol, it must have made your day that you could resurrect GH 's name Lol. This is the man whose signings were Rosler and Draper. Who left us with a worse squad than he left us with and was in charge during the worst and most embarrassing TV defeat (far worse than FP in the relegation season) 3-0 up at Tranmere and his wonderful tactical brain managed to get us a defeat from that position. He organised the team that DJ built but that is where he stopped. He jumped ship, and shamefully left us in the lurch just as we were going to a new stadium. For me I didn't think we played very attractive football under him, just more organised.

Also until recently we had one of our best unbeaten runs, and yes it was in THE PREMIER LEAGUE ? Now put that in your pipe ! Don't make me post the finishing positions of the teams we still had to play when Hoddle jumped ship again... it was basically most of the top 8 that we still had to play, meaning his record for 2001/2 before he abandoned Saints on the sly was gathered mostly from playing against all of the bottom half twice - and with all the top teams piled together an unbeaten run against the rest wasn't as tricky as it might have been. He evidently took a look at the remaining fixtures and thought "I'm not having any of THAT".

The reasons for the sad decline of our club must be remembered so that we never make a similar mistake again. The thing is, you're about the only person that thinks not appointing Hoddle is in any way relevant to the ensuing debacle, which was caused as much by Lowe's failure to stick with the relatively successful manager he DID appoint, as anything else. And the desperate reaching to try and make out that a manager who has subsequently failed to achieve success anywhere after Saints would have duplicated his middling successes is quite sad. Sturrock was getting the mid-table results Hoddle had got when he "left".

You may recall in the week running up to our great escape, I mentioned that I would be seeing Dave Hoddle(Glenn's uncle) and John Radford whilst I was in Bishops Stortford. We did meet up at the Bell in Stansted, although JR was only there for 20 mins or so, I did have a 2 hour conversation with Dave Hoddle. Inevitably the subject of Glenn, Rupert and Southampton came up. In the press there are stories of Rupert replacing NP with Glenn, or Sam Allardyce. So let's look at it, for what it's worth, thanks to Dave's input, I think we can dismiss both of these rumours. Rupert and Glenn are not so close as you would imagine.. 1..It still rankles Rupert the way Glenn left Southampton to join Spurs. 2..Glenn blames Lowe entirely, for the breakdown of his return here, prior to the Sturrock appointment. Yes, I know that fans resistance to Hoddle was blamed, and still is. But that's a myth, Rupert made the decision not to proceed, and since when has fan pressure influenced him? One or two directors voiced their nervousness of the appointment, but again since when did Lowe let that worry him? Rupert's decision was made entirely on a medical report, that still to this day, is very relevant to Glenn's ability to perform the day to day duties as team manager/coach. 3...Glenn Hoddle's only became aware that he hadn't got the appointment came when he saw the pictures of Sturrock on the pitch at SMS on TV. He immediately rang his agent to find out what was occurring, his agent then rang SFC to speak to Lowe. A row ensued, and Rupert was accused of betraying Glenn. He retorted that he (agent), and his client," were fine examples of loyalty considering the way he left in the first place" 4...Since then, the only contact that Glenn and Rupert has had, according to his uncle, have been at a couple of official functions. Both have been strained.

Dark Munster Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 Hoddle was excellent for us, probably best we have had in a generation. He was probably also the biggest **** Stuart Gray seemed very nice chap. Know which I would prefer! He wasn't manager long enough to really judge how good he could have become in the longer term. He seemed to know how to get the most out of his players, but that was only in in the short term (Tranmere aside), and on top of that he showed no promise in the transfer market (Uwe Rossler anyone?). Also his track record at other clubs is far from stellar. And as just one comparison, Ian Dowie did brilliantly in his first year with Palace. But it didn't take long after that for it to go downhill from there and for him to get sacked.

I like that I didn't even have to point out the hypocrisy of your argument that my evidence was "speculation", as it might have made it look like I was taking you seriously.
