(not THE) Kevin Moore Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 this is the REAL reason FIFA crack down heavily on government meddling in national FA's.... they don't want to be accountable to anyone... and they seemingly aren't. there is no higher authority to refer to. I'd be all in favour of the English FA boycotting international football until the whole thing is reformed..... A) it might work, B) we wouldn't have to watch England get humiliated at every major tournament...
bridge too far Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 Two things: A caller to a phone in on R5L last night said that governments have to sign a deal saying they will not meddle in any way in FIFA's affairs and that countries winning WC bids get tax breaks. And Warner is now saying that MBH bribed FIFA to get the Qatari bid accepted. The Australian federation is demanding the costs of its bid for 2022 be returned. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13592684.stm How much credence can be attached to Warner's statement is a moot point though. Saint Fan CaM Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 Another example of how we have allowed a Great British export to be used and abused by the rest of the World to such an extent we are now governed by the benefactors of our game. I would agree with boycotting any FIFA event until it's sorted, however the FA is in as much turmoil. There needs to be a massive shake-up of the game from top to bottom. In fairness I became a little suspicious when Qatar won the 2022 World Cup. They are a dreadful bunch - a number told us that they were voting for our bid in 2018 and then voted the other way. Jack Warner even grumbled about our gifts to the wives. I hope we go for the jugular on this.

Flyer Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 FIFA are corrupt to the core starting at the very top. The only way forward is for the FA to have the balls to start a new governing body. Im sure most of Euope would follow and only the tin pot middle east, African and Central American countries would be left in FIFA, no loss to anyone. Then they can ban clubs from paying agents, forbid 3rd party ownership worldwide, start a salary cap. Basically fix all the problems FIFA have created over the last few decades. HK_Phoey Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 I agree I think the only way FIFA will survive is with a clear out top to bottom. There isn't one of the current mob perhaps with the exception of Platini (although I think even he is tainted by being seen as Blatter's Golden boy) who I have any faith or trust in what so ever. I think should be run by ex-players, who have played at the highest levels and needs somebody completely new who is untainted whom everyone else could rally around. I know he is 70 years old now, but lets face it still younger than Blatter, but I think Pele would be the ideal candidate.

hamster Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 The only organisation with enough clout and resources to take on FIFA are Sky. Murdoch could easily afford to smash their empire and he is ideally set up to provide a superior product for the member countries and customers alike. One problem with this idea though is that we'd have less corruption at the cost of ad breaks. I could see loads of benefits though; cheerleaders, foot long hot dogs, goal-line technology and best of all, the return of The Albion Band. SSWC (Sky Socca World Cup) finals would be held at Wembley each and every four years with the host nation getting a bye.

hamster Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 In all seriousness I'd have Nic Cortese heading up any new governing body. His ideas, albeit controversial to the minority of Saints fans, would be great for the game on a global basis. All participants representing their country do it for nought and the eventual winners receive a nice watch? That should be incentive enough IMHO: 'Grandad, tell us that watch story again please, and what it was like to sheik the hand of the great man who saved Soccer from the jaws of evil' 'Well nipper, it all started back in 2009 stood in the Centre circle of the home of the modern game....The Friends Provident St Mary's Bowl....' hamster Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 Why do people not like the Sky idea? Make it freeview (with ads) or PPV without. It's simple and it would work. They just need a fair share policy IMO where by all match revenue is shared equally between participating teams who are all required to be registered charities or nfp. Also wholescale confiscation of goods deemed to contravene copyright, such as unlicensed use of such terms as "2010" or "World Cup". The heavy-handed "policing" of the event in SA by FIFA's stormtroopers under the pretext of protecting the sponsors pretty much killed the 2010 WC as a social event in SA last year. Saint_John Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 The Olympics had a scandle with the selection of the Salt Lake City selection in 1995. The IOC came under pressure from their Sponsors saying they wouldn't continue their Sponsorship until there was changes. The IOC changed. If you look at the FIFA web site their "partners" are mentioned at the bottom. http://www.fifa.com/index.html If there is a boycott of "Adidas; Coke; Hyundai; Emirates; Sony and Visa" by the general public while they continue to support the current FIFA setup. Things will change because Money talks.
Gemmel Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 When the first reports started to come out, I believd apathy woudl rule and it would be swept under the carpet and nothing would be done. Today, they have turned on themselves and will ultimately kill themselves. FIFA as we know it will soon be finished. Other countries will have been sounded out, the "What if scenarios" are now "When" and once the breakaway countries reach 5 big footballing nations, it will be all over. We will already be putting pressure on blatter and his cronies. There might well be a world cup in quatar and russia, but they won't be World cups as we know them. The real ones will be taking place in England and Australia and then by 2022, it will be unified under a new body and back to normal.

revolution saint Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 Blatter has pimped football to the highest bidder at every opportunity and it's product has suffered (although it's bank account hasn't). Take the world cup - it should be 16 teams and not the bloated behometh it is now. UEFA are no better (increasing the size of the Euros) and as a spectacle the Champions League is a pale shadow of the European Cup. Unfortunately whatever follows FIFA (if anything) will be driven by greed, sponsors and money as well.
Crab Lungs Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 Stupid old men, who probably have never kicked a football in their lives, profiteering off our game. It's disgusting. Yet it has been amusing watching them all lash out at each other, allegations flying in every direction as their faux-friendships dissipate and survival of the fittest comes into play. The one to watch for me is Jack Warner. He's possibly the nastiest and most dangerous snake in the grass and has the attitude that if he's going down, then everyone else is coming with him. If that is the case (as it appears to be from my perspective), I for one will be cheering him on. Come Mr Warner, rip 'em to shreds.
