The Chamberlain Dilemna.......

Recommended Posts

Selling Chamberlain would be ridiculous.

Everyone would shoot off about what a great deal we got from, what a good job by Cortese to get such a deal and how he's not that good anyway etc. Then in 2-3 years time he will get a hat-trick for England against one of the top teams in the world (like Theo) or score a hat-trick away against the Champions of Europe (Bale) and we will all realise again how much of a special talent we've let slip through for peanuts.

We've supposedly got money now, why even consider selling our best talent? Ridiculous. Even if we get silly money (8m or so) we'd be lucky to see even half of that go into transfers in the short term. Cortese won't pay over inflated prices and every club will know we've got money and ramp the prices up.

It's not usually the clubs choice TBF once a player has had their head turnned by one of the big boys there's not much that can be done. Youcan force them to stay and most likely they don't give you 100% anymore. If a club has the money you can force them to sit in the reserves but what's the point? best off getting the best money you can and getting in a player that want's to be at the club.

I''m not saying thats the case with Oxo but if he ends up accidently bumping into Arsene Wenger while out for dinner their won't be much NC can do to stop him leaving

If AOC wants to go and one of the big six come in for him with a decent offer, we will sell. All the power today is with the players, and we will not keep an unhappy player. I hope like most of you that he stays, but I don't think the decision will be in Saints or NC's hands.

For those who think we are Man City of this league, I think you are being very delusional. The clubs who have fallen out of the premier league over the past couple of years have parachute payments bigger than our current turnover. Look at the betting odds to see where the bookies see the CCC going next year!

NA wasn't brought in to the club to recruit big names from the premier, but to do what he did at Scunny which was to unearth gems from the lower leagues, but with a far larger budget this time. If NC wanted to bring in a manager who could have attracted "big names" to the club, he would have brought in a big name manager. I expect to see some new faces this year, but it wouldn't surprise me if we cherry picked the better players we saw at SMS last season from league one, rather than those bigger names deemed not good enough for the prem.

You mean newly promoted Saints joint 4th favourite to win the 2011/12 Championship with Skybet?

As Nigel is thinking over things on his well deserved holiday, I wonder if he is pondering what to do.....

The problem is this....if Chamberlain stays during the summer and next season (which we all hope) it cuts down on available transfer funds which we have to play with this summer. However, if a big club comes in during the early summer then let's assume we get £7-8M up front (if Cortese does his negotiating job properly) , which would enable us to buy say 3-4 high level Championship - bottom level Prem players with the money.....which could make us a true top 6 club......

The BIG issue is timing.....my question is - should NA be saying to Chamberlain's team we are going to set a deadline for next season planning - if you want to go - say by mid July - then we will have no option, but to support the move - which gives us some time to buy and bed in new players in pre season; if after this time - we will refuse all offers regardless?. If Chamberlain really loves the club this sounds like a sensible compromise?.

Thoughts all?

 Yeah - he has a reputation of being a pushover!!!

You're right in that we need to know relatively early. It would be stupid to sell him last day of July, and then only have a week to get sorted for the new season. Personally, Cortese strikes me as stubborn, but well within the interests of the football club. It is him who will have the ultimate say. If he turns around and rejects offers of £10 million then so be it, there isn't a lot anyone can do about it. At 17, Chamberlain has so much time on his hands and I think he'll stay for next season, get some invaluable experience and then go from there. Saying all that, it still wouldn't suprise me if we cashed in.

If I read NC correctly "cashing in" is the last thing on his mind. His avowed aim is to have the academy supply the first team but AOC is developing just a bit too quickly for that scenario. I think that he wants to keep AOC unless his hand is forced - and if it is - then I think that we can guarantee that he will extract the max.

I think we can confidently say that we are not a selling club... how much have we brought in in player transfers since NC arrived? it will be interesting to see NC in action when dealing with high value sales - how would he have dealt with the Kenwyn situation?

personally I see AOC going nowhere during the summer. He's just celebrated promotion (success) and is going to be playing first team football in a higher level and in a team that has ambition. Saints don't need to sell/can afford him. he has 2 years left on his contract so we don't need to panic sell for another 12 months & by then we might be in a position to offer premiership football ourselves.

I think he/his dad/Saints will wait until December and see if we are challenging. If were not I think he will go. But, presuming he has preformed at the higher level his value will have increased, like it probably did when we won promotion.

How many League One, Championship or Premier League teams have training facilities as good as those being built at Staplewood? It is on a par with those in the top six of the top flight. That is being done without Premier League or Championship TV money. It is clear evidence of huge ambition being backed up with real money. They aren't building it as good as they are in order to hang around in the Championship or even the lower reacher of the Premier League for years to come. If they wanted to do that, they would have used a smaller scale development of Staplewood.

I can only suspect that, the brigade behind the notion of, 'cash in and build the squad', don't go to many games and haven't seen much of the lad 'in the flesh'. I, like most people, go to games to be entertained. AOC is a quality, entertaining winger, that there are very few of and he's only 17...

Eventually, due to the size of the club, we will always lose our best players eventually if they do become that good. We all should be used to that! However, I would like to see the home grown youngsters that have established themselves in the first team, stay a little longer than a season. The amount of time we managed to see both Bale and Walcott was extremely disappointing, and is another reason why I was delighted to see Lallana sign another deal.

There's no dilemma here. We need to try and kepp him at all costs, whether we can or not, remains to be seen.
