As the book, so the thread. Inspired by SuperMikey's thread

We've all travelled somewhere, sometime and will have one place that sticks in the mind as being OMG.

Let's try and keep it sensible, (yeah I know as Saints fans, Plymouth Away/Orient in the Day Wembley 76) but somewhere that still exists physically that one of us could go and visit tomorrow, whether to impress a GF or your Mum,

Sort of more a legacy for those who keep asking for where to go advice.

Was it somewhere like the cliff-top at Tintagel? A view over Skye from a particular pub after a rain-storm? A perfect New Forest Pub with a perfect summer evening watching a game of cricket with a perfect pint? A sunset over the Indian Ocean? or even somewhere exotic like The London Eye?

For me?

Petra in Jordan climbing to the top sipping a cold tinny as the sunset while looking over the River Jordan.

(I did spoil it last time by singing Swing Low up there but hey, had to be done)

There are probably 1,000,001 places that are absolutely amazing but it depends on your frame of mind when you happen to experience them as to whether they give an OMG memory. They wouldnt necessarily really apply to anyone else.

The main viewing point from the walls of Mdina, Malta.

There is something quite special about basically being able to see the whole of a nation from one point. Beautiful.

Also, while you are there, check out the Mnajdra, Hagar Qim and Ggantija neolithic temples. They are the oldest free standing man made structures (3500 BC) in the world. It's the first evidence of complex human civilization spreading from Africa, quite humbling.

I'm not well travelled, but I did enjoy drinking at a bar by the beach at Camp de Mar at sunset, jumping the waves age 14 at Manly beach, singing at the Albert Hall, Notre Dame and Sydney Opera House (amongst others) and, in this country, taking the Heights of Abraham up Matlock Bath.

Oh, and SMS. :-)

I preferred actually climbing the Nohoch Mul pyramid in Coba to only looking at Chichen Itza. Halong Bay sunset is something else. Motorcycling over the High van pass takes some beating.

of all these exotic places.. I want to go to france to the war memorials....

I go to France/Belguim on a regular basis to explore the old battlefields of both WW1 & WW2.

Start of with Ypres and the 1917 Passchendaele frontlines and then take in the Dunkirk fighting retreat on the way back.

Of course, Normandy offers plenty but I found following the path of the Hampshires both very rewarding and very moving (My son wants to do the same with the South Staffs regiment).

I've "adopted" a grave in the main commonwelth cemetery in Bayeaux of an unknown British sailor, KIA 6th June 1944 and have been visiting his grave, in a very bizarre way hoping that he knows he's still remembered as his parents/wife/kids would have never have visited him, for over 20 years.

The Neapolitan Riviera probably has more tourist sights than anywhere else on Earth. Naples, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvious, Ischia, etc. Positano is my favourite. Also Italian places like Venice, Rome, Sienna, Florence, Taormina, the Lakes, all great.

Vancouver. Hong Kong. North Thailand. New England, especially Maine.

Interesting drive up there. Did you stop in Homs or come in from Lattakia?

Never been, but would like to visit Syria. Not sure of how safe the place is though especially now.

Was possibly one of the last great "have a bit of an adventure" places to visit around the Med. Think of it as Turkey without the tourists, but it is still very different for a non-seasoned traveller and a must to have a good guide/tour or friend up there to take you round.

The old town in Damascus at night is full of bars & Restaurants

Palmyra is just amazing

Alleppo Old Town & Citadel for Crusader History buffs is a World Heritage site

The Water Wheels in Hama make you stop & think as well having been built by the Romans

But Krac de Chevaliers is a jewel. The location on the hill, the inner buildings still have the Gothic ceilings (similar to Salisbury Cathedral) and there seems to be nobody ever there. I went in analogue camera days found the pics recently will try and stick some up.

The Top Gear crew were right. Syria is one hell of a place to go. Just needs to get it's politics sorted out. For organised tours before the Arab Spring it was safer than Denmark (IMHO) today - wouldn't be able to get a visa & would be followed everywhere by men in dark leather jackets in case you were a Journalist on the quiet.

Used to go every 6 months or so, just loved the place and the people.

Oh & think I mentioned it before. The women......
