SuperMikey Posted 27 May, 2011 Share Posted 27 May, 2011 Noticed that today the Daily Mail blares the headline "UK DOLES OUT MORE FOREIGN AID THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY". Is this a good or a bad thing?
Northant Saint Posted 27 May, 2011 Share Posted 27 May, 2011 'Aid' is a slippery term you must remember.

SuperMikey Posted 27 May, 2011 Author Share Posted 27 May, 2011 Personally, I think it's a great thing that we give so much aid. While the likes of Melanie Phillips bleat on about how "charity begins at home", billions of people starve. I think the problem with foreign aid is how it's used by the governments that we give it to - is there some form of supra-international counsel that controls how this type of aid is spent? ecuk268 Posted 27 May, 2011 Share Posted 27 May, 2011 The problem with foreign aid is that it's not about directly helping people, it's about political influence. Hence Pakistan can afford its own nuclear progam but will still give them loads of dosh to try and keep them on side and not becoming more extremist. Whether that's successful or not is a matter of debate.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 27 May, 2011 Share Posted 27 May, 2011 India has it's own aid programme giving hundreds of millions to poorer countries, and yet The UK gives India aid.India is also a nuclear power, with it's own space programme. It's the ecomonics of the mad house, and nobody can seriosly justify it. Unless of course it is aid wrapped up as sweetners to ensure British Companies get contracts in India. Other recipients of British aid have included Slovenia, Malta, the Czech Republic and Hungary, fellow members of the EU, and two of whom are even in the euro. In 2009 Britain also gave £380,000 in aid to the enormously wealthy Saudi Arabia.Crazy completely and utterly crazy. Cameron's promise to increase Foregin Aid whilst cutting everything else, was just playing to the gallery and a political vainity project. A project that will cost the British taxpayer money they can ill afford. If I can afford it, I'll give money to charity, and if I can't I wont, or will cut it back. Government should be the same. Lord Duckhunter Posted 27 May, 2011 Share Posted 27 May, 2011 and they say the coalition is all tory... It was stright out of the Tory manifesto. When it comes to Aid they are all as bad as each other. All want to suck up to Bono and Geldof.
