Yes I did it on the common in 1966. The week after passing I fell off my bike on the pathway just by the Cowherds. Spent 7 weeks in traction in the RSH including Christmas. The awards were actually presented in a ceremony at the Civic Centre. Did it again in about 1969 - still have the Knight of the Road badge sponsored by News of the World. The instructor was a very old chap who had been a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during WW1. My 10 year old son is actually doing it this week but at his school after lessons.

Back in the dark ages when I was at Barton Peveril Grammar, you had to do it if you wanted to ride your bike to school.

Did mine in rural Shropshire in 1966. It had a lasting, salutory effect on my bicycle riding: I treat bike riding as being in charge of a vehicle - staying off the pavement, following the rules of the road, signalling my turns.

What irritates me are bicycle riders who will change instantaneously, with no advanced warning or logic, from being a vehicle on the road, to being a toy on the pavement.

I did this is the early 70's so I could ride my bike to Shirley Middle school. Did rather well and scored 100% and won an award from the Daily Mail as a result. I also had my award presented by Roy Castle. (rip) Mind you not been back on a bike since the late 70's.

Seem to recall it was quite popular back then.

Did it at primary school. Was talking about it the other day and how the police used to go around the villages stamping bikes. I don't think they do this anymore.

not sure if they go round doing it anymore but they have special days at local Police Sations where you can take your stuff in to be ,i presume, etched or UV marked..

I did my Cycling Proficiency when i was in middle school (Heathfield Juniors). I remember it was done by a guy who looked very much like a Leprechaun!....

I don't know what it's like over there, but over here police are not interested at all in dealing with stolen bicycles, so stamping them is pretty much a waste of time. They're clearly not keen on collecting information about stolen bikes, and when they do find abandoned bikes, they just stick them in a warehouse somewhere, in case someone should ask whether their bike has been found. Every once in a while they will sell off the bikes in a public sale or auction.
