I pretty much gave up drinking when I became a father, the very odd beer to be socialable is it now days. I would hate my kids to see me off my tits. I went to my boys football awards evening last night and some mum a couple of tables down was w ankered it was embarrassing TBH.

So it's quite simple just have a sprog you won't have time (or the money) to go out on the pish all the time.:(

I'm your age tdd, and i'm finding it harder to cope with the day after a session, but I would never, ever give up booze. I'd rather give up Saints, fags and my missus than booze.

This might make me sound like an alcoholic, but doing shiftwork, fortunately sessions are few and far between.

I find it extremely difficult to go into a pub and not have a beer if they have it on the hand pump. In my defence I would add that I am a bit of a connosieur when it comes to real ales.

I (we) are cutting down (again) though as we recently worked out that we were pubbing it three or four times a week, often more

Time to take stock and save a few bob into the bargain I think.

I got to a point when I put loads of weight on and was pretty much drinking every night, it took me a while to realise I really didn't need it. There was no real issue, no hidden agendas, me and the missus just had spare cash and used to just go and get a bottle of wine and some tins.

I decided to stop being a tw*t, I now have so much more cash to spend and have lost about 2 1/2 stone, I also don't drink so much lager and if I am looking for a big session will generally drink Jack daniels

Seriously, TDD, and with the kindest of intentions, I hope you find that you sleep better if you do cut down on your drinking.

Alcohol does cause sleep problems, honestly. (see the link I posted on your 'sleeping' thread).

My problem is i am fine when i dont drink, if i dont have any i dont want any. It's when i do drink that it's a problem, once i reach my 3-4 drink threashold i cant stop! Seriously got into some right old states not knowing when it's too much, missus always said i had an addictive personality and the problem is when i'm like that it's when i get myself into trouble FFS

i eased right up on it 20 years ago after a session with my brother and a couple of bottles of vodka. Spent the next 2 days being very ill, and was completly embarrassed by my little ones keep asking what was wrong with me. Now its a couple of tins a week and half a bottle of wine at the weekend, (oh and maybe a pint of ringwood best now and then).

I have cut back massively on the amount I drink compared to how I was a year ago.

My old routine would have been 6-8 cans of lager a night on a friday, saturday, sunday and 2 or 3 weeknights. A few nights in the pub wouldn't be uncommon either. The worst thing was that at the time it didn't feel anything other then normal!

About a year ago, I noticed that I had finally reached the point were I basically stopped growing.... well, in terms of physical maturity anyway (I stopped growing at about 25/26.... took bloody long enough.) The drinking lifestyle I maintained therefore caused me to very quickly gain weight, my metabolism simply wasn't processing it anymore. That, coupled with a break-up where alcohol was given as her main bugbear gave me a reason to change.

I changed my drinking to only being at the weekends. When visiting to Dad down in Winchester during home game weekends or friday nights out with my housemate. Then only one or two cans on the other nights of the weekend. During the week, if I fancy something a bit more interesting then water, tea or juice it'll be a Becks Blue or Cobra Zero.

I quickly noticed that my sleep patterns stabilised, I had far, far more energy during the day. My quality of work increased and the previously mentioned other-half and I got back together.

Another big after effect is that I cannot process as much Alcohol as I used to at my 'peak.' So I couldn't drink as much as before even if I wanted to, thankfully. I wouldn't want to give up drinking completely though, the bare fact is that I enjoy a pint! It would be a waste if in life you deprived yourself of everything you enjoy, naturally, as with otherthings that I enjoy (Burgers, Pizza, Curry, The odd episode of "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.") they need to be in moderation.

All the best to anyone who does want to give up completely though, in terms of health it will surely only be beneficial.

When the new season starts you'll be back on it - mark my words.

Listening / watching Saints sober just isn't the same!!!

I guess I'm a bit like you - I don't go out boozing often (honest!!) - just seem to binge drink on footie days and whenever we have friends round or go to theirs on my off days.

Also more wine seems to be getting slurped at meal times as well ...... and sitting in the garden with a cool crisp bottle of white or a margerita is pretty nice as well .... as i said I don't go out much - just booze at home mainly!!

I have been boozing and gambling far too much. I've had about 30 tins of lager at the weekend and dropped £500 into the slots. Absolutely ****ing crazy. I can tell you now that was the last money a bookie will ever get out of me.

I only really drink when I'm watching Saints. Probably average about 6 pints during a home game, maybe a few more if going away on the train.

Have the odd glass of wine or bottle of ale in the week but that's about it.

Exactly the same with me.

I used to get trolleyed every Friday & Saturday night & still get up & play footy the following day. Since my son was born (14.5 years ago), I've only been ****ed twice, both times I consumed about as much as I did in my prime & bloody hell I suffered, staying in bed or on the sofa for all the following day, footy was definitately out of the question.

When I was in my teens / early twenties, I used to go on lads holidays and do 14 nights on the trott on the lash. Going out at 10 and getting in at 5/6 in teh morning!

The thought of doing that now makes me want to cry!

Like a few people on here have said, having kids stopped me going out so much.

Yeah, I'm thinking about quitting the devil's juice too.

The reason why I don't have any savings is squarely down to the booze. And the liver is starting to complain. But then I sit back down in front of my budget spreadsheet and see how out of reach a middle class existence is and part of me says 'boll0x to it all, let's get p!ssed'

I would have to earn over £50,000 a year before tax to be able to afford to put aside the £1,000 a month for a deposit on a house. Still take me 2 years to save enough for 10% down payment on a place with small garden and 3 bedrooms even in one of the less posh areas. And then there is the 'pension' savings. ****** to it all. Why can't I be one of the Elite? Life stinks so i need the booze. Booze and football, life's antidote to a ****ed up pointless existence of drudgery just to make ends meet.

Simple, if you go to A&E due alcohol excess, then you should have to pay the bill, imho anyway.

harsh, you may never call upon the service for NHS for years upon years then after one night of a wrong choice, or being spiked, you end up in hospital...surely ou are entitlted to a service you have paid for over the years..?

DD, if you know the rules before you go out, then you can't complain when it comes to paying the piper. However, see above re exceptions. Gender change....make them pay, lipo suction....make them pay, breast enlargement...make them pay, tattoo removal....make them pay. Just my opinion thanks, you're entitled to yours.

ok, lets go as far as every person who visits the doctor that "did not need to really"...pay something like £10 or £20 for the time that was wasted..?

Well done DD.

How you gonna celebrate? A nice cup of tea?

Mrs h and me have done quite well cutting down since we got back from the nb binge last week. I've found that buying a nicer bottle of wine and discovering that they are not 'all the same' has led to lower alcohol intake and more sensible approach.

I still can't walk past a hand-pump though, but I don't think that's an issue as I can only manage 3-4 at most anyway.

Giving up drink is pretty tough, but you just have to find something that you do as an alternative. When I gave up the old heroin after 6 years on it, I just had a strawberry Pop Tart whenever I felt the need for a hit. It was easy, really.
