However, from someone who watched the game today and can thus speak from the pedestal of, y'know, actual experience, he was one of their better players.

And has been since he's joined. He can without doubt play in the Premier League (lower-mid table side).

A shame Blackpool couldnt hold on for 30 minutes for a win. They have brought something different to the negative PL tactics of those struggling to keep their PL status. Much will depend on which players want to go and if Holloway can replace with similar quality but I cannot see them being near the auto spots, maybe similar to Burnley this season. it'll be interesting to see how they approach a European campaign as well.

Birmingham are screwed financially so will not be able to keep the quality. I can see them sacrificing Europe (if they are haven't breached UEFA financial rules) for a quick return especially if they get a decent manager, they could certainly get to the play offs.

I see you're as trenchant in your analysis of football as you are stylish with your prose. Without his very well executed back-heel under pressure from a couple of defenders, there would have been no unopposed cross, and thus no tap-in. I've no doubt at all that he's a disruptive influence and lacks the requisite quality to be a sustained influence in games week in week out. However, from someone who watched the game today and can thus speak from the pedestal of, y'know, actual experience, he was one of their better players.

I'll give you that, I was rubbish at playing football, (even my nippers under 12's Tyro team would leave me till last to be picked for the mini match at the end of training). I think my real problem with him was the disappointment that he promised so much but just didn't quite deliver. An arguement could be that he wasn't given that chance, but I'd like to think those that are making that kind of decision at SMS seem to know what they are doing. I do appreciate what he did when he was on fire, hence my high expectations.

But, hey, its football. I have to be professional in my job, I have to be supportive of my kids, I have to be reasoned in social situations. But where football is concerned I can be irrational, entranched and as biased as I want.

Thanks for the compliment by the way.

If they do indeed qualify for europe it may allow them to keep some of their better players.

I doubt that many players are going to stick around for a midweek trip to Metalist Kharkhiv.

No, they tried to get rid of him and it went pear-shaped. You only need to look at the success they had with Birmingham to know they're no mugs.

You have got to be kidding, they are a total pair of amateur muppets.

Holloway did act a bit bitter after we beat them, but hey ho. They have been so entertaining this season and its a shame theyve come back down, assuming they dont lose too many of their players (Adam is the only one I think will definately go) they will probably be decent next season.

Birmingham tend to have a knack of yo-yo'ing so I guess they'll probably do alright net season too.

So, once again the worst 3 teams got relegated.

No they didn't, heard holloway after the game, they didn't deserve it - maybe only getting 14 points in 2011 and letting in 49 goals (21 games) isn't relegation form

Posted

Can only think Holloway's bitter comment was because of a dislike for Saints? We absolutely played them off the park that day and was our performance of the season imo, they, minus Matt Phillips, were sh*te. Maybe he doesn't like us because we stayed up over his Leicester team a few years back? Who knows.

He'll deservedly get the stick back when we play them.

Holloway is already complaining that the salaries of players will be cut by 50% next season, but in the recent Grauniad article on football finance they revealed that Blackpool gambled on getting up last season, spending 140% of income on wages!

How they use the parachute money will be interesting, as well as how much their gates drop by.

An article yesterday said they have four players on over 1m pa. The same article says will lose a lot of their squad and were the club in most financial danger if they went down. They may go into freefall.

we sound just like brighton fans when it comes to holloway

Nothing like the Brighton situation.

Adkins made a cheeky, off the cuff comment. Hardly offensive but Brighton fans dragged it around all season....

Holloway was rude and off hand about Saint fans and above all was a complete and utter hypocrite. He moaned about teams fielding weakened sides against teams around him in the relegation zone and then fielded a weakened team against us. He moaned about clubs tapping up his players but didn't care one jot about turning Puncheon's head. Did he criticise his own fans when they sang "Champions League you're having a laugh" when they were beating Liverpool??

No?

No rivalry with Blackpool, just a certain amount of Schadenfreude...

Holloway does seem to have a problem with Saints. He's made a few comments over the years.

St Andrews will be a relatively easy away trip for me, hope it's on a Saturday.

I have no problem with Blackpool I just think hollowhead is a grade A c ock monkey (and have done long before this season) and wanted to see him get relegated. Depending on how they spend their PL relegation reward, Blackpool could well be more of a threat than WH and Birmingham who are both on dodgy finanicial ground by all accounts.

Can we sing;

"Europa League, you're having a laugh!"

Holloway will love that.

If you really want to rub it in its got to be "championship your having a larf"

I think people predicting melt down for west ham and brum are being too hasty...

of course they will get rid of some players but the ones that remain will be decent and they will be able to snap up good frees and good NPC players more than most...

I would be surprised if both teams are not pushing for at least a playoff spot

Agreed, people predicted that Newcastle would implode when they came down and get relegated again.

They ended up walking the league.

Fully expect Brum to win the league, as they have a Europa place they're unlikely to lose any apart form their best 2 or 3 players and that money coupled with the parachutes I expect to be invested immediately to achieve promotion to the prem. If they don't go up this season however they won't be nearly as intimidating next year.

I don't think so - was hardly seen all game, as usual !

Soooooooooo looking forward to having their big mouth manager down here next year - yes we are 'having a laugh' Mr Holloway and you are actually not having one are you! Your smugness was always likely to come round and bite your a r s e and thankfuly it has. Oh and why don't you bring your first team with you next year - you're going to need em!

The money you get from the Europa League is minimal, particularly in the early rounds. Nor is it much of a player puller to attract new signings unless it is in combination with Premiership status. Plus they will have an early summer start and have to fit midweek European games with a 46 game league season as opposed to a 38 league game season.

Wigan would have been great. The other two are crap yes.

How would Wigan have been great? I've never been and I just can't see it being anything but dreadful...

The League is going to be tougher and the challange greater than the one Norwich faced. Hull, Skates and Burnley were rubbish , West Ham and Birmingham will be better than them. If reports in the sunday papers are to be believed then Brum face meltdown, but if they manage to keep their manager I think they will be a threat.West Ham will be there or there abouts provided they appoint the right man and keep their heads. Would have preferred Wigan, but glad that Hollowhead will get the chance to meet our supporters again.

You are making an irrelevant comparison.

You shouldn't be comparing Blackpool, Birmingham and West Ham to Hull, Pompey and Burnley as they are all still in the league. You should be comparing them to Q.P.R., Norwich and one of Swansea/Reading.

Apart from not having been there yet because they came up when we went down in 2005, it's a very easy train trip from Manchester Piccadilly on the line to Southport, and Manchester weekenders are probably more fun than the Blackpool ones...

I see in the Echo Holloway is now blaming FIFA, the Pemier league management, UEFA, Ryan Giggs, Saints supporters, Bret Ormorod, The 'Coalition' and anyone else he can muster to blame (Slight jest!!!)- anyone but himself for the Blackpool relegation - What a bitter, silly, sad oaf. Personally, I much prefer the dignity and intellect of Nigel Adkins......Enough said...

He may be many things, but he's not one to shy away from the truth. He's not really to blame for their relegation, he did FAR better than anybody expected this season, so I give him a lot of credit for that.

Makes sense, probably good drinking to be done there as well. I tend to get a nosebleed north of the Midlands though so St Andrews is just fine for me.

Night out in Wigan? Epic! Their 'going out' street is rammed with pubs and clubs all next to each other, open till god knows when, ppl are friendly, one of the fanciest 'revolutions' in England..

But rugby is their game of choice, heck of a following in the town.

In two words? 'Earthy charm'. The oak hotel's a bit of a toilet tho, even if it is central.

Was it not Pearson who managed Saints the night be beat Holloway's Leicester then proceeded to undo the mess that IH left them in following relegation and made Holloway's excuses for relegation look rather silly with an amazing promotion winning season with less resources?

Having said that, there is still something that I like about him.
