September Saint Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Did Anthony Pulis ever really exist? I think he was a tax dodge invented by the bean counters and his write-down value is now zero, so he just disappears! Is it like Formula 1 where crap drivers pay for the privilege? I think we should be told.
Charlie Wayman Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 As always simply not bold enough in the clear-out so some expensive journeymen get retained whatever their past contribution and irrespective of our future needs. So with few going through the building "Exit" expect even fewer coming in through the "Entrance". Looks like every seat on that effing bus has an annoying. 'Reserved' ticket stuck on it! The retained list always gives some insight into what will happen next. This one suggests a lack of toughness in telling a player his time has come wahtever his past contribution - FFS we are not running a bloody retirement home - but taht's what you could expect when everyone has a smile on their faces? If they are all friends and mates together as one, it'll be like a 'flippin Masonic Circle - with no room for anybody trying to break into it.... ... and inevitable it means we have not freed up any wage bill constraints to add some bigger signings. The Cat Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 It's the retained list, not a squad list for next season. Players will probably leave and others will come in, some signed and some on loan. With our set up and training facilities a lot of Premiership clubs will be more than happy to loan us decent players. Keeping Martin is a good move as he's young and is clearly a good, strong defender. Send him out on loan to gain match experience and see how his all round game has developed. As far as I can see we to get in 3 very good players to strengthen the spine of our team. A CB, an intelligent solid midfielder who can play quicker ball than Hammond, and a decent striker with a bit of pace. Add in a winger if Chamberlain goes. This should be quite achievable for a club in our position.

benjii Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 As far as I can see we have only voluntarily retained one player so far: Jaidi. Some have triggered automatic extensions. The clue is in the word "automatic". We have released those not deemed good enough. That leaves Connolly and Gobern. Only a dinlo would not want Connolly in the squad but similarly only a dinlo would offer a lucrative contract without paying heed to his more than passing acquaintance with the treatment room. Hence we are negotiating. Gobern will be on relative peanuts and is young, as others have noted, it therefore makes sense to make him an offer even if we don't really want him. The obvious conclusion is that the complainers are divs or ****s.

benjii Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Only a dinlo wouldn't want a striker who scored 4 goals in league 1 last year? Fair enough. Only a dinlo would form a judgment based solely on that statistic.

NickG Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 (edited) Guys stop kidding yourselves. I have read 2 pages of this drivel. The squad is nowhere near strong to compete with the top half teams in the championship. Look at reading, Cardiff, Leicester etc packed with ex prem players with power and pace. Some of you get far too sentimental about players in our squad, simple fact is there are some not good enough I'm afraid. The automatic contracts are clearly triggered by promotion so does not mean the players will not leave. Martin and gobern would need to go out on loan as they are not going to be realistic first team. Seabourne, mills, puncheon, forecast and possibly forte will be shown the door and I have my doubts we will hold on to Alex. Are people forgetting the words of our new European scout.....6 players needed Centre back - a decent partner for fonte Centre mid - a quality champ player next to Morgan Centre forward - a pacey striker alongside Ricky Left mid - back up for lallana as holmes will probably be let go Right mid - replacement for Alex That is where we build people who finished below Norwich who we beat last season twice, we have strengthened since and they do not have a squad of ex-prem players! nick give it a rest.. norwich signed a shed load of players.. and if we want to finish top 6 we would need to strengthen with power and pace through the middle of the team wiki's list of their signings last year 21 May 2010 7 MF Andrew Crofts Brighton & Hove Albion £300,000[4][5] 4 June 2010 15 MF David Fox Colchester United Undisclosed[6] 22 June 2010 11 MF Andrew Surman Wolverhampton Undisclosed[7] 1 July 2010 22 DF Elliott Ward Coventry City Free[8] 26 DF Steven Smith Rangers Free[9] 5 July 2010 1 GK John Ruddy Everton Undisclosed[10] 15 July 2010 10 FW Simeon Jackson Gillingham Undisclosed[11] 1 January 2011 20 DF Leon Barnett West Bromwich Albion Undisclosed[12] 1 January 2011 21 FW Aaron Wilbraham Milton Keynes Dons Undisclosed[13] 13 January 2011 32 DF Marc Tierney Colchester United Undisclosed[14 how many premiership apprearances there? Chez Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Lee Cook has been crippled by injuries and has no pace as a result. He's over the hill. No thank you, we should be aiming higher than him. he's 28 and yes he has had two bad injuries so would be a gamble (lets get him down here and see how his fitness stands), but your comment about him now having no pace is complete and utter guesswork unless you saw his 9 minutes at Blackburn in January. There seems to be very few people who understand the basis for what we are talking about when it comes to discards, sales and signings. One would have thought it was obvious, but the ignorance never ceases to amaze.
Matthew Le God Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Has this geezer actually been appointed yet? As far as we know nothing official from the club, so in that case his comments are as vaild as mine and yours. When he is on the payroll, then and only then, can we take him seriously. Opening sentence of the article... "The former midfielder Jacob Friis-Hansen has been appointed Director of the European Recruitment" later on it says... "Friis-Hansen is employed immediately as Director of the European Recruitment"

"Friis-Hansen is employed immediately as Director of the European Recruitment" Yes the article says that but is anything on the offical site yet? We all know and have been told by Cortese that nothing is for sure until it's on there. Before you all start specualting on what AC Millan, Barcelona and Real Madrid players we are signing. Remember Elliot Ward FFS?
WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 IMO we will need 5/6 quality additions if we want to be challenging right at the top of the league. I was just looking at the current odds for next season and once we add in the 2 other relegated sides from the premiership plus Reading/Swansea the ccc looks very competitive next season although its difficult to judge until all the new squads are assembled West Ham,Leicester,Notts Forest,Cardiff,Middlesborough,Ipswich,Burnley, leeds are all fancied at least or more than us at present. Then add in the other 3 teams and we will probably be about 8/9 favourites at best Teams like Bristol City and Hull also fancy their chances.A lot of sides seem to have reasonable budgets to spend and are going for it next season so its going to be a highly competitive league and imo will be one of the most difficult seasons ever to get out of the ccc depending on who is relegated tomorrow. I still think we will do well next season but 3/4 quality additions that walk straight in the 1st team are needed to really challenge.

Remember Elliot Ward FFS? The club doesn't announce everything on the OS. FOr example last summer they appointed a new under 14 and under 16 coach full time. They didn't announce who they were. Friis-Hansen has clearly been talking to Cortese and/or Reed, and knows the clubs ambitions and plans for the summer. Why would he lie about all of this in an interview with a Danish paper? Someone has also edited the article so it doesn't make out as it did initially that Chamberlain is probably leaving, probably under instruction from the club.

Spin it how you want, we were told by NC himself only to believe what is on the OS. His appointment has not been announced on there and he is not listed as staff. Until he is, as far as i am concearned his comments mean nothing and is to scouting what Elliot Ward was to new centre halves.
Matthew Le God Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Elliot Ward signed for us last January according to Sky Sports. You can't compare Sky sources vaguely claiming Ward is signing for Saints, with Friis-Hansen (the man in question) talking about his new role with direct quotes attributed to him in a national publication. To say... his comments are as vaild as mine and yours ...is a nonsense, as he clearly knows what the club is planning. He knows far more than any of us what Saints plan to do in the summer.

Elliot Ward said his goodbyes to Cov players and was waiting to be told to meet up with his new team mates, hardly vague claims of signings. The simple fact is and say what you like, nothing has been made official, when he is listed as staff or announced on the offical site, then and only then can we take his comments seriously.
Hedgehog Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Surely if all that is needed was a load of ex premier league players, then each year the three teams relegated from the prem would always go back up as they are full of ex premier league players? The squad we have just needs a few additions. My main concern is up front, we need a good striker, not sure who, but that would be my top priority.
gaz Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Bye Bye Pulis. Hope Connolly signs. Gobern I'm not fussed about. Haven't heard of the others on the list. http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2364123,00.html
krissyboy31 Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 I've no real complaints about this list, but spare a thought my friends for the youngsters who have been released without ever making it into the 1st team. It must be bloody hard to be told that you're just not good enough at that age. o Good luck to them. Don't think that the club is saying they're not good enough. All clubs have to release youngsters because they can't just keep everyone, who has come through the academy ranks. They need to make room for the next intake and so on and so forth. Several of this intake will probably make it as pros elsewhere and may have to go down to go up, like Denis Wise, Kevin Phillips etc. have done in years gone by.
rooney Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Whilst the youngster who have been released must be disappointed it is not the end of the world for them. We released players like Matt Mills, Howard, Mike Williamson who have all gone on to make a good career for themselves.

We released players like Matt Mills, Howard, Mike Williamson who have all gone on to make a good career for themselves. You are right, but Matt Mills wasn't released, he was snapped up by Man City (for a £250,000 compensation fee) when his contract ended (recommended to them by Steve Wiggly who was by that time coaching up there).
Eastcowzer Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 No shocks in the retained list. I guess any debate will centre around whether or not Gobern and Connolly manage to agree new deals. Yes there is. How did Forecast manage to slip under the net, ?.
