Give it to Ron Posted 13 April, 2015 Share Posted 13 April, 2015 Years ago the tour used to allow you to drink an hour for free after the tour. Hall and woodhouse is a strange company nowadays . They're really big into their seasonal ales , therefore a lot of pubs have knocked tanglefoot on the head .Tanglefoot was their classic ale , strong but a session beer taste, but at least half of their pubs in the Poole area don't stock it now . They also don't allow their beers to be sold anywhere else either , whereas previously they allowed Freehouses & golf clubs ect to stock them . I always used to look for a Hall & Woodhouse pub , but there's so many alternatives nowadays unless they're serving Tanglefoot I won't go in ( their first Call , which Is rebranded Badger Best is shocking) . If you get the chance do the Ringwood Brewery Tour - was completed smashed at the end. Brilliant tour and beer.
Saint_Ash Posted 13 April, 2015 Share Posted 13 April, 2015 If you get the chance do the Ringwood Brewery Tour - was completed smashed at the end. Brilliant tour and beer. Yep, been about 3 times and each time we were allowed 45 mins of free drink in their bar at the end. With regards to the Hall and Woodhouse pubs and their badger beers I have noticed a few not selling Tanglefoot. It's mainly Fursty Ferret and the likes, mainly because it's weaker than the 4.9 that Tanglefoot is and like how most pubs are going if they sell the weaker beers they can charge the same amount but pay less tax. Poachers Choice is in my top 5 beers of all time and I just wish it was on draught. I cannot remember the last time I drank a lager that was under 4.8 (the "normal" strength of premium lagers nowadays) as they are all p1ss. If a pub didn't sell a decent real ale I would walk out again, much to my wives chagrin.

The tour at the Hogs Back Brewery (between Farnham and Guildford) is similar. Almost as much beer as you can drink for £12.50. Highly recommended
st alex Posted 13 April, 2015 Share Posted 13 April, 2015 Polish lager FTW. The Polish larger you get in Southampton is tonnes better than Carlsberg/Carling/Fosters, which all taste like ****e. Kronenbourg's alright when it comes to cheap mass produced largers as well. Would generally prefer not drink larger though and stick to ale. There are local breweries putting out half decent stuff: Flacks, Bowman's, Itchen Valley etc.
hutch Posted 13 April, 2015 Share Posted 13 April, 2015 Hoegaarden for me. More flavour, body and less gas. I always thought the gas was down to the curry

Thanks for the update. I first became aware of Badger beers about ten years ago. The beer and wine shop (now closed) just around the corner from my friend's house in Frome (Somerset) had a display featuring four or five of their bottled beers. They seem to specialise in flavoured beers - one I recall had an interesting peach flavour (Golden Glory?). We were down on the Dorset coast another time, in order to visit Thomas Hardy's Cottage, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, and decided also to do the tour of the Hall & Woodhouse Brewery in Blandford St. Mary (which makes the Badger beers). A very long but memorable day!

SarniaSaint Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 IPA for me, if I have to go for a lager its something along the lines of Heinieken(sp) or a Pilsner Just to let you know most of the beer here is pilsner which is just a fancy name for larger!!!.........difference between ale and larger is how it's fermented...... ales are bottom fermented lager is top fermented...........and regular beer here is 5% ABV
svetigpung Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 Did the usual lagers when i started drinking. The likes of Fosters, Carlsberg. I realise now they are just fizzy weak drinks. Abroad, the lagers are stronger and generally have more taste. Have moved on to bottled IPAs nowdays. Theres so many different brewers and bottles out there, its exciting. Loads of local micro-breweries getting in the market. Amazingly some great local beers from new swedish breweries. Who would of thought so?
