warsash saint Posted 19 May, 2011 Posted 19 May, 2011 My 1TB external hard drive has died ( water damage i think !!) Anyway how easy are they to dismantle & try to hook up to my destop PC to see if any data is recoverable? Will it still still need a power supply or will the PC power it with a connection via SATA ? Cheers
Al de Man Posted 19 May, 2011 Posted 19 May, 2011 It should be a piece of p*ss. Open the external case and remove the drive. Kill the power to your PC, open it up and if it's reasonable modern, you'll find your optical drive will have SATA power and data interfaces which you can temporarily use. Power the PC back up and see if it recognises the second drive and if the data's accessible. Let us know how that goes and if it's still not working, we'll delve in to it in a bit more detail.
warsash saint Posted 24 May, 2011 Author Posted 24 May, 2011 I have finally got round to dismantling my external hard drive & as far as i can see I have no additional connections except the USB & power connections I already use ... how am i going to connect to PC??
Baj Posted 24 May, 2011 Posted 24 May, 2011 its probably SATA II, mine was, I had to do exactly the same thing as you. Youll need to plug a sataII cable into it from your mobo or purchase a sataII pci card
warsash saint Posted 24 May, 2011 Author Posted 24 May, 2011 Thanks Baj...Sorry for being thick but how does the sata cable connect to my knackered hard drive ? All i have is a USB connection ??
warsash saint Posted 25 May, 2011 Author Posted 25 May, 2011 Was looking at that but how will I power the hard drive ?
