Liquidshokk Posted 18 May, 2011 Share Posted 18 May, 2011 Got an iPhone? There's a good app called sleep cycle which records your movements in your sleep so you can find out if your too active in your sleep (not winding down enough?) it also has an alarm function that wakes you up at the pivotal point in your sleep as sleeping past that point can apparently leave you feeling groggy all day and it's an ongoing cycle each night. Oh and you can install sleep recorder too and upload any interesting things you say in your active sleep. But that's just for fun (might tell you if you're having bad nightmares though which prevents you from relaxing through the night)
benjii Posted 18 May, 2011 Share Posted 18 May, 2011 I often struggle to fall asleep although, thankfully, this has improved markedly over the last couple of months since I moved house. I am currently however, consistently waking up about one hour before my alarm goes off, regardless of whether I've had much sleep or not. I have sympathy with anyone who has a sleeping issue as it really can impact on your quality of life quite severely.

Thedelldays Posted 18 May, 2011 Author Share Posted 18 May, 2011 i have the sleep cycle app... I used it last night and the results were not pretty.... I know your sleep has stages of REM (rapid eye movement) and you go from deep sleep to shallow sleep etc.. but it is really peeing me off that EVERY DAY (unless i take nytol) I am awake around 3-4am....... just so tired at work etc

Going to bed at sensible time and aiming for 7 hours? Love Dad. Seriously, apparently reading a book until you can't keep your eyes open any longer helps get into a deeper sleep. dune Posted 18 May, 2011 Share Posted 18 May, 2011 I ate a chunk of stilton before bed a couple of nights ago and dreamed all night and woke up feeling like i'd hardly slept. I always take a pint of water to bed at night and that helps quench any thirst but what's really weird is that if I do wake up I always have the munchies for something sweet like chocolate. The worst thing I find is fidgety legs. I sometimes get this if i've done too much walking. Bosh a couple of painkillers if I feel them starrting to fidget and it normally sorts it. Islander Posted 18 May, 2011 Share Posted 18 May, 2011 Dell Days - I remember a few weeks ago you were on here as you were concerned about your future career. I don't know if you have resolved this but an over active mind can is one of the main causes of insomnia. If you still have concerns then once they have been resolved then hopefully your sleep pattern will return to normal. I wake up every 2 hours (approx.) every night and I know just how bad it feels to go without sleep so I do sympathise.

Crab Lungs Posted 18 May, 2011 Share Posted 18 May, 2011 it has gotten worse over the last 6-12 months..to the point where it is REALL peeing me off and just so tired at work ALL the time Well, I have to say that I don't really have a solution for myself as I do suffer the same thing, exactly as you described. I am confident that I know what it is though but I'm pretty sure that until I attain what I need to do, I won't be able to sleep to easy, or as naturally as other people. However, I would definitely recommend "Quiet Life" pills, which are herbal, and seem to have done the trick for me if I do take a funny turn and cannot sleep (which is more often than not!). dubai_phil Posted 18 May, 2011 Share Posted 18 May, 2011 Hypnosis can help. I have a mate who is fully qualified as well as doing the stage stuff. Waking up before the alarm is often simply the unconscious pre-programming itself. Also, the more you think about it the morre you programme yourself. Do some web surfing, self-hypnosis can help. I use that for sleeping on overnight flights when there is so many disturbances, my mate taught me but it was basically lay down go to sleep ignore the noise. But stress has a hell of a lot to do with it as does Old Age. Perhaps more booze could work? But not the volume stuff like Beer/Wine etc as you just wake up for a pee all the time

Got it when I was a schoolboy and played two rounds a day, the golf bits are not much help but the hypnosis techniques they talk you through are more effective than anything else Ive tried since. Its worth a punt, and even if you cant sleep at night the deep relaxation effect makes up for the lost sleep.

OldNick Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 Im no doctor but taking sleep potions will not help long term. I suspect it is stress related. At particularily stressful times I wake at 3-4 and can't get back to sleep. it is annoying but you worrying about not sleeping might just add to the problem. Saints are going up, so you should be nice and relaxed.
Pedro Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 I know a few small business owners suffering lack of sleep, stress and worry about finances are the main causes. Following Saints hasn't helped, I've been waking up early with the AL song on my mind, my mate says he has been with the We're coming for you song. Basically, wake up early for one reason or another, the brain becomes active and getting back to sleep is impossible until the alarm is about to go off. Last night l took one and had the first goodnight sleep for sometime. No fighting with the bed sheets or pillows. Took one at 10pm and woke up dieing for a pee at 8 ish. Felt great today. So maybe ask your doctor for a course of them. Hope this helps

In all seriousness, It sounds as though it a lifestyle thing, try looking at your "pre sleep routine" and see if there is anything you could change.
