why should walcott be one of the best players..he had half a good season in division 2...

wenger is probably in the top 3 in world football of bringing young players to at least a european level...at least..

why do saints fans think our players should be the "best" after a handful of matches outside of the top flight...oxo now being the next one...

bale has done well...maybe bale is a better player than walcott...unless you think arry has pulled a master stoke.....?

yet bale has been poor for half a season this year....

as for "few" young players at arsenal making the grade..?..are you ACTUALLY mental..?

clichy

ramsey

fabragas

song

wilshere..ffs, WILSHERE

van persie to an extent

nasri to an extent

walcott

in the recent past you had...

anelka

henry

ljundberg

viera

jesus, cant believe this is even a debate

not bad really...ffs

All irrelevant. Wenger will be gone as soon as Jose is available.

Unless Wenger signs some experienced heads to mount a proper challenge next season

I can't believe how some of you are so short sighted!

We simply must do all we can to keep Chambo, he is going to be the best player to have come out of the academy since Le Tiss in a years time.

In my opinion he is a better player than Walcott as he has pace to burn and doesn't get knocked off the ball easily and has great balance, the only thing that can stop him from becoming a world great like Messi will be his own attitude, and as he hasn't showed any signs of pretentiousness as yet, I doubt that will be a problem.

For me, he is the most exciting young player in this country, and you could see how much of an improvement he made to our team when he came on against Walsall, hitting the post with a good shot at the end of a great run almost as soon as he set foot on the pitch, and then scoring a great goal and frightening the hell out of the Walsall defence for the rest of the match. If we can find a pacy striker with a good eye for goal over the summer to team up with him, then a play off and even an automatic promotion place would be within our grasp.

If, and god forbid Cortese does decide to sell him, we must get top dollar for him and that to me even in todays market means a valuation of around 15 million with a pretty hefty sell on clause. Let's not get done on the fee like we were for Bale, who Spurs are now prepared to listen to offers of over 40 million for, and what did we get for our sell on clause for Bale? Tommy bl**dy Forecast with a five year contract around the clubs neck. Nicola remain firm and don't let Fergie, Abramovich and Whinger bully you, we need to send out a statement of intent, that we are heading for the top and are intent on keeping our best players and adding the best young talent to get there.

Oh well, here we go again….. Better than Theo? When he’s scored a hat-trick for the England 1st team in a competitive match against the best team in our group, scared Barcelona half to death – more than once, scored in a Cup Final, broken (Rooney’s before Theo) age and scoring records for England at U17,19 &21 level and a regular (when fit) for the best footballing side in this country and probably the 2nd best in Europe behind the team that fear him (Barca), all before he’s 23!… I’ll agree with you. Do you actually remember Theo when he played for us? He was a year younger than Oxo and playing in a division higher yet made a far bigger impact.

As for Oxo being the most exciting young player in the country now – sorry but I’d say the small matter of Jack Wilshire being the only young footballer we have that can potentially hold a torch to Fabrigas, Xavi, Busquetes and Iniesta and the potential to be as/ if not more important to our Country than Gazza, slightly pips him to that one….

Dont forget Oxo has a better football brain than Theo, he's proved this against Dagenham and Redbridge and Carlise. Theo is just a sprinter who cant cross.

I loved this line though "the only thing that can stop him from becoming a world great like Messi will be his own attitude, and as he hasn't showed any signs of pretentiousness as yet, I doubt that will be a problem." based on a season of playing against the mighty Gary Borrowdales of this world.

Question is how much value Arsenal added to those players - (they weren't developed from scratch as other clubs did the hard work) - and whether competitors could have got as much, if not more out of them. Arguably, Man U has a more impressive youth set-up than Arsenal.

Quite honestly one of the most jaw droppingly shocking sentances I've ever seen on the internet!!!!

Fabrigas - Fee = free. Value = £30m+

Van Persie – Fee = undisclosed. Value = £20m+

Clichy – Fee = undisclosed. Value = £15m

Gibbs – Fee = youth team. Value = £8m

Wilshire – Fee = youth Team. Value = £30m

Song – Fee = undisclosed. Value = £15m

Nasri – Fee = £12m. Value = £20m

Bendtner – Fee = youth team. Value = £8m

Sagna – Fee = undisclosed. Value = £10m

Wallcott – Fee = £8m. Value = £20m

So that’s roughly £120m of “added value” in the last 4/5 years.

Oh, before that we get into Viera, Henry, Anelka territory….

Arsenal are the only big club that would qualify under the new fair play rules bebause of Wengers awesome ability to spot young talent and nurture it. Anyone that thinks different is just plain wrong.

Anelka fee - £500k Sold for £22.3m

Henry fee- signed £11m sold for e24m - after Wenger had turned him into arguably the best striker in the world at the time.

Viera - signed £3.5m sold for e20m - after Wenger had turned him into one of the worlds best central midfielders

So make it another £45m of "added value" just on those three players.

What can I say, words simply failed me.... Let's start him for England next chance we get, with his crossig and lambert's aerial presence the Euro's next summer are as good as won!

Ah the Rupert Lowe business argument for football. 8)

let's ask the Gooners shall we.

What would you rather have had in the past few years?

165 mil of added value?

Or one trophy?

Personally I think balance is always the key the concept is right but Wenger need a couple of wise heads in this year's team IMHO

No £10m for a player with his first season just out of the way IS mental. So many players built up to be potential world beaters come through the ranks at League One and championship level and look great at that level yet never make it to the heights they were built up to. Jermaine Pennant, Gary McSheffrey, Tom Taiwo, Jason Koumas etc. For every Walcott there are 10 of these, but then Chamberlain is going to be better than Walcott as he has a better football brain and Walcott is just a sprinter who cant cross. LOL!!

So Wenger was wrong to pay £9m (in the end) for Walcott?

I completely agree with their philosophy (admittedly it's easy to say that when you don't support them) as I'm a football fan as well as a Saints fan and I hate seeing Citeh, Chelsea etc hoovering up trophies with no respect for legacy, quality of football etc.

I was just astonished to see someone above suggest that Wenger doesn't "add value" to players!

Well for one, Walcott had played in the championship, made more of an impression and was a year younger. Two Walcott was the most wanted young player in Europe at the time and could have gone anywhere so he payed the going rate it would seem. But IMO playing that sort of money for a young player who may or may not come good is mental and a big risk, Fabian Delph anyone? £8m two years ago only played 10 times for Villa and been out for a year with his cruciates. However if people will pay £10m, we'll take it.

If you slowed down and read the second part of what I said, it might make more sense. Any proper -dare i say scientific- consideration of Arsenal's ability to add value or not must compare what would have happened to the value of those players if they had gone to another big club instead of Arsenal. Just consider how Bale's value has shot through the roof at spuds (supposedly worth more than Fabregas??? IMO Fabregas is a much better player) or what man u did with ronaldo (smashing the world record) or even liverpool and torres. Of course, some of this -like the figures you quote- is just inflation - and nothing to do with value-added.

Its very difficult to assess 'what would have happened'; but arguably the values of Arsenal players would have been higher if at the very least the club weren't perennial bottlers, were more flexible tactically and actually won something. From a form perspective, with the exception of Wilshere and Nasri who have been brilliant, there is a sense in which the progression of some players has stalled. Surely one of the reasons you buy young is to see them develop and get better and better - for the most part, I don't see this with the current crop of youngsters...

The question is - what is he worth to us? If he is determined to go (no actual evidence of that) then we are entitled to ask for as much as we can get and if the offer falls below our assessment of his value to us we keep him. As to comparisons with Walcott - well, it all comes down to opinion, but in mine Alex is a more complete footballer than Theo was at the same age, has pace, crossing ability and an eye for goal. I think that reference to Theo's experience in the Championship is of minimum relevance since the top L1 teams can more than hold their own in the Championship as Norwich showed this year and I expect us and Brighton to show next year. What both Theo and Alex have got, though, that sets them apart from many who had potential and failed, is a good temperament and stable family values. I would not underestimate the importance of either to their likely future success as Wenger and Ferguson both know.

My cousin-in-law is a freelance journalist and was at the launch of the new predator boot today.

In the company of Nani, kaka, rvp among others was our own oxlade-chamberlain along with his "entourage".

Knowing that I am a saints obsessive I urged my cuz to see if he could get the low down.

He did not get to speak to oxo but did have a chat with a number of journos there.

The concensus was that in January a 10ml deal was extremely close with arsenal (this would tie in given some of wengers comments in jan) however apparently Cortese pulled the plug for unknown reasons at the last minute.

Then close to deadline day Fergie came in for Oxo and Cortese said £15ml and he's yours. That was a non starter but apparently fergie told oxo's people that he would be back in the summer.

I take everything i hear with a pinch of salt and it will be a quiet summer for these journos. However, it is a little different printing a story in a newspaper to fill inches/sell papers than it is having a chat with colleagues and peers.

Personally I would like to see him stay, and there clearly is a chance. If he was to leave I think united would be a good club for him.

Whatever happens I think it is a win win situation for us.

Fergie said this... "We had an interest in one player, and I thought we had a chance of bringing him in, but the other parties involved weren't ready and so we have put it away until the summer."

At Oxo's age Theo was prepairing to go to the World Cup after making his debut against Hungury aged 17 and 75 days. He had already been in the top 3 for Young Sports Personality of the year in 2005 and won it in 2006. Everyone seems to forget that at 17 Theo was known as the most exciting young player in Europe with every big club after him. He had burned up and scored goals against the likes of Wolves, Stoke and Leeds - with respect far bettersides than Oxo's been up against this season!

The only way I can imagine Arsenal and ManU approaching Oxo or his representatives and commenting in public, would be if there are conditions within his contract allowing such. We know Fergie has spoken to Oxo’s representatives because he stated in public that the possibility of ManU being a possible destination had been addressed, obviously it was not seen as such previously. What I don’t believe is the high value being placed by contract conditions. These conditions would have been inserted on the insistence of team Oxo, so I really doubt they would have agreed to such a high value, you may as well not bother.

What would make sense are conditions similar to Theo’s, where all stages of payment were laid out based upon initial amount and add-ons for various games played. It’s not unimaginable to see Cortese playing hard ball and in effect making that very difficult to happen without all the money being paid up front. There may be the possibility that Cortese can block the contract and demand any figure he likes, but I really doubt that and something that would be quickly sorted by a tribunal.

I don’t believe the clubs value the player at anywhere near the figures being mentioned but that may well change if performances in the Championship live up to expectation. It’s a win-win situation for these clubs and not a big minus for Oxo. The Championship will be a perfect development field for Oxo and the clubs greatly reduce the risk of buying a dud by seeing those Championship performances. The only problem for Arsenal would be if he does decide to go elsewhere. There seems little doubt to me that the lad will be off if someone puts up the cash, but at least they are being practical should this not happen. Saints can’t hold out forever because there is only 2 years left on his contract and playing in the Championship at this stage of his career could well be the best development possible.

As for Wenger being about to be shown the door someone needs to look at the comparison of transfer deals between Wenger and Ferguson over his tenure. The difference was something like £250M before Ronaldo (maybe after, can't remember exactly). The only reason Arsenal now have the ability to fight it out with the top boys in Europe is solely down to Wenger, something that will not go unnoticed even with a change in the boardroom. Absolutely staggering, unparalleled in the UK.

£15 million would be enough to:

1. Do the complete building works at Staplewood (£5m)

2. Fund Scouting network around Europe for many years (£5m)

3. Buy a couple good players (£5m)

Be daft not to let him go for £15m. Especially as we did ok without him the last quarter of the season. And remember, one youngster does not a team make.

Quite.

If we need the money and there's really £15m available, sell him. Same goes for £10m, which can buy 2 or 3 top 5 nPC players.

If we don't need the money, why sell a player you'd want in the team ?

And to the sceptics about him being at an adidas do - firstly he does wear adidas boots and was one of the first to debut the new F50s (those hideous orange things he's got), and secondly, even if he wasn't in the promo pictures, it's feasible that adidas would invite some of their "lesser" stars to get a feel for what their brand can do for them by mingling with some of football's top names.

Off topic, I wonder if Lambert will go back to Predators now they've got a new boot out, he switched from the old style to Nike Tiempo Legends around November time ?

because it then frees up the money already allocated. He's a gifted youngster that has high ambitions. Before long he will start to moan and drag his feet and get under NA's nose and probably end up a de-stabilising influence on the rest. If he wants to go to Manure let him, re-invest the proceeds. It is a team game, after all.

If the Liebherr's are spending money anyway and have the resources to do so it is daft to sell players you would then struggle to replace. Saints would be weakened in right midfield, they wouldn't be able to buy a player better than Chamberlain. The only way Saints fans will see players as good as Walcott, Bale and Chamberlain is by bringing them through the academy. To actually buy them when they are good isn't going to happen.

No, of course not. I am working under the assumption that he - and his advisors (his dad) - have requested to leave. In that respect, it might be wise to let him go to avoid 'stroppy young Primadonna syndrome' affecting the rest of the team spirit.

15 million pound.... deal or no deal?

No deal. If we'd have been in a position to say No Deal throughout the 90's we'd have been a top 6 club every season. For the first time since i've supported Saints it'd be nice to keep hold of our best players. Only by retaining players like Chamberlain will we be able to really push on as a club and since we now have loaded owners that want to make us sucessful it'd be completely crazy to sell unless he wants to go.

I think that you might be doing the lad an injustice here. He doesn't seem the sulking type. I think that he will just get on with playing his football and leave to others to sort out finances and transfers.
