OK, based on what you've seen so far would you sign him? I'm sure you'll probably come out with the "I trust Nigel" line but frankly IMO Stephens really hasn't done anything - if he was 5 years older most people would be slagging off his performances so far. I just don't see any natural attribute he has that will get better, apart from gaining experience which will make him an average L1 player. If he can't hack it in a very good league 1 team then don't expect him to be better in a less competitive championship one. Obviously I don't rate him but even if we were a newly promoted side just looking to stave off relegation I wouldn't fancy signing him.

To be fair you thought we should accept we weren't going to get automatic promotion........

can't hack it? as 21 year old in CM was Oldhams top scorer and capt! Think he was fairly good on assist as well

in his 4 games he has played..he has assisted in at least 1 vital goal...two if im correct.

he made a great contribution at argyle away..when the pressure was on

he did nothing in that game. He was absolutely woeful in the first half (our worst player IMO) and only marginally better in the second.

I don't have a problem with you saying you need to give a youngster more time, but he was poor in the games he did play no matter what your stats might suggest.

BASED ON WHAT I HAVE SEEN SO FAR!!! What do you want me to say? That we should sign him? Based on what evidence? That a newspaper reports that Everton wants him? The same accusations of jumping the gun can be leveled at the people saying we should sign him. I can only go on the evidence of my own eyes and form an opinion on what I have seen of him. Based on what I have seen so far, my comment is that he is not worth the transfer fee and wages and that there are better more proven options available. Of course it is entirely possible that this could change and that he progresses and becomes better but I am offering an opinion AT THIS STAGE.

I hope that isn't to difficult for you to comprehend.

I'd be gutted if we signed Michael Owen after the slagging off i've given him throughout his entire career. I simply can't stand the little git.

Yeh I bet you boo'd when he scored that goal against Argentina, the mans class... Plum!!!

Indeed and in any of those four games did he do anything?

Depends what you mean by doing anything. Was he brilliant for 90 minutes slicing the opposition open with defences splitting passes and mazy dribbles then no. On his debut against Charlton he looked good on the ball and can pass, then he got injured and disapeared for a few weeks. He played well at Plymouth as well, in a massive game. So yes, he did do something.

I've more time for Stephens as a long-term prospect but agree re. his performances. Its also clear that NA didn't quite trust him for the big away games after his performance at Rochdale. Yes he started against Plymouth though that was arguably out of necessity not choice (Guly's injury at Brentford forced Chaplow to play RM, freeing up a CM spot). By contrast, he was practically ignored for the massive Brighton and Brentford games.

interestingly...this season (going on league 1 alone)

dale has made one more appearance than guly, has the same amount of assists and goals...yet is not very good despite being only 21 and playing alot deeper in the park..and playing for a pretty average club

Well it's all about opinions isn't it because I certainly didn't see anything worth getting excited about. Sometimes you can see a player and see that even if they're not the finished article that there's something there - I just didn't get that impression with him. Of course I could be wrong but all I've heard so far is he's clearly comfortable on the ball and has an eye for a pass. All I've seen is comfortable when playing a 5 yard pass.

why and how would I know that on the league 1 site...?

even more so.. calm and composed at such a young age

if we dont snap him up and see what our coaches can do, then someone else at our level at least will do so....

I felt like that when we signed Mark Hughes......and he did **** all to win me over in the time we had him which seemed like an eternity.

Dale isn't a bad player. He wasn't spectacular in his time with us but he didn't have a massive amount of chances to impress and make his mark, as we had a pretty settled group of players.

He's obviously got talent to work with in the glimpses I saw of him. I reckon he's one of these players that will become a decent NPC midfielder playing for a rival club if we miss out on him. We've slagged players off before that aren't crap as proven by their success at other clubs.

I'd be happy with him signing. (if that's what it turns out to be)

exactly how I saw it.

I'm not suggesting we could sign some of these Premiership players banded about on the HCDAJFU thread, but I do wonder if there might be better available than Stephens.

I know he will be a Saint, but we do sign poor players now and then. I was one of those slating the Pulis signing before we got him based on a few sighting for other clubs, but then again I thought N'Guessen would have been decent for us (admittedly he got less game time than Stephens) so what do I know.

None of our midfield stood out in the plymouth game (not least until the second half when we were comfortable). Of course, that's largely because plymouth bypassed it with its long ball tactics and pressing us high up the pitch.

Is it just me or is anyone else starting to get a little bit peeved off with this whole 'announcement'? It's 10pm and still no news. It had better be good when it finally arrives!!

Obviously still trying to out-fox the Echo with the timings. ;)

Hopefully that means it is something worth with-holding like a player signing/kit launch.

TBH I don't know why people go so over the top on it. If they announce something - good! If they don't - oh well, never mind. Plenty of time in the summer to hear lots of news and it's way too early to be getting worked up.

I normally wouldn't get that excited, but the build up by Mr Sibley points to something of some note (I hope!).
