Audiobooks

I'm getting a bit bored of listening to music when I'm in the gym or doing long distance journeys in the van, so I want to start listening to audiobooks instead.

Where is a good place to download them from and what can you good people recommend?

If I'm in a long run on the van I usually put some good comedy on. The old Hancock stuff is brilliant, or Down the line, theres loads on cd nowadays. Get on amazon spoken word and fill your boots. If you want a load for free send me a memory stick and I'll fill it up for you.

I know where you're coming from Bexy.

I'm a lorry driver and I've recently got into audiobooks as an alternataive to music.

Don't get me wrong, I love music and have a vast collection but sometimes it makes a pleasant change to listen to something different.

If you are a torrent user (which I am not, and do not advocate and neither do Saintsweb etc etc) you may find many audiobooks.

I know of someone who is currently listening to the entire BBC full cast dramatisations of the Sherlock Holmes canon.

He has also recently downloaded over 30 BBC Agatha Christie plays.

He justifies the downloading of these torrents by telling me that these were all originally broadcast on Radio 4 and as a licence fee payer he feels that he has already paid for them. I couldn't possibly comment on whether he is morally right on this one or not.

You could also try checking out the Audible website. You will find 1000s of audiobooks available there. It is really easy to use and the selection is phenomenal.

There are many recent books as well as live comedy shows etc. There is usually an introductory offer where you can download one free book to start you off.

Finally, remember that many classic literary works by the likes of Dickens, Poe, Austen etc are no longer covered by copyright laws, and as such you will find audiobooks of these greats are freely available. I have an app for my android phone that lets me download and listen to 1000s of audiobooks for free.

HTH.

Over here our local libraries have quite a good selection of audiobooks available. A couple that I've particularly enjoyed: 1) The Old Man and the Sea (the Hemingway novella) read by Donald Sutherland; and 2) Dubliners (a set of short stories by James Joyce) read by a dozen or so Irish actors. I commute almost an hour to and from work every day; I often switch from listening to music CDs to BBC Radio 4 podcasts and to audiobooks.
