It's a new contract for Adkins!!

Recommended Posts

You've obviously got a load of stick for all that, but nothing posted there is wrong. I like Adkins, I'm pleased he's with us and I'm looking forward to next season, but the hard work really starts now, finishing 2nd given the resources available to us isn't a massive achievement. Lets look forward to see what he can do with decent resources in the Championship....

why does hard work only start now...do you not think the club as a whole worked their arses off to beat huddersfield (on a record breaking run) to 2nd spot

we got the highest total in 20 years not to finish top..are you saying that was all easy..?

not massive, but big achievement considering head start other clubs had and Huddersfield's form

That's the key to it for me. It wouldn't have been a massive achievement had he been here all season, started on a level playing field rather then 23rd or whatever it was, with a team devoid of confidence and one of the teams going unbeaten for half a season and still finishing 3rd. The fact that all that occured, plus injuries to Lallana and AOC at crucial parts of the season, make it a very good achievement in my opinion. Massive acheivement would have been 1st in those circumstances.

I think this is great news for the club and can't really understand why any fans would be so negative about it. As with any football club, if the manager doesn't get results then they run the risk of getting the boot. However, the longer contract shows a committment to the fans, and more importantly the players. The playing squad clearly appreciate the way NA and AC respect them, train them and win with them. We have been craving stability for the past ten or fifteen years and finally we appear to have achieved it. Yet there are still doom merchants out there who refuse to get on the bus claiming it is gonna break down in a few miles. Just enjoy an exciting summer and stop looking for non-existant negatives.

It's a football contract - it means nothing.

Next season is going to be a massive test for NA as he'll need to get us playing one touch passing football. He has got a big job on his hands to build a team capable of getting out of the CCC - we certainly don't have that team now. This summer will be about bringing in 6 or 7 quality players imo and then bringing in more in January.

NC will expect us to be challenging at the top of the CCC, as do I, and if NA hasn't got us in that position (or looking like we can get into that position under his stewardship) by Christmas then Nicole will become impatient fast.

you have no idea at all though..

we had no guarantees at all of going up in january...yet he wanted him long term..or wanted to make the commitment..

people very much seem to think they know what NC thinks and how he works...

from what it seems, there was more than we know as to why pardew went........but that does not mean he is some sort of rupert lowe with managers

Delldays I can't be arsed to argue with you - that's just my opinion of the majority of chairman because that's how football has become in recent years - there's that much money at stake that most chairman are impatient.

That said i've supported NA from day 1 and I sincerely hope he does suceed in the very difficult task he's got. Make no mistake we're gonna need huge changes to the team to get out of the CCC so it ain't gonna be easy and unlike last season, when we were basically Pardews team, we're soon going to see lots of NA signings. He's done a good job getting us out of L1, but now the real work starts.

They are simply gutted that they've been shown up to be clueless.

Remember, they thought O'Neil was coming and that Adkins was beneath us.

Way to generalise. I'm very happy that Adkins has achieved what e was brought in to do. I believe the real test for him will begin next season. This contract extension isn't really news because if he is underperforming he will be sacked so it means very little. I hope he is not sacked because if he isn't it will be because we are upper mid table which is were I expect us to be.

Nice to see him get a new deal. Maybe that was to fend off some interest in him?

But i am with Hypo on this one. Adkins did what was required of him. He had 41 games (90% of the season) to get into the top 2. He achived that.

Some people try and concentrate on our start of the season and yes it was not the best but it was not awful either. Was only slightly worse then Brighton and Huddersfields. We lost a couple of games on the trot. That does not make it a disaster. By that logic the fans at Spurs should be calling for Harry's head seeing as they won only 1 game in their last 13!! Saying we would continue to lose and Adkins saved us from something is a tad ott in my opinion.

He walked into the best squad in the league. He walked into a top 6 cup winning side. There was no re-building job to be done. He didn't need to do any changing to the backroom staff. Didn't need to change any of the infrastructure. Already had some of the best facilities in all of football let alone 3rd division. The players he used were already here. If i have one criticism of Adkins this year is his own signings. They have not exactly set the world alight as players like Fonte,Lambert,Barnard etc have done.

Next season his real test begins. He will need to find the right players to bring in and will need to make the team Championship contenders within 2 years. He will be judged on that more so then what he did this season. Because although he deserves huge respect and the praise of us fans, he did not perform some miracle with his hands tied. Far from it. If Bompey go up that will be the miracle not what happened here.

It has always been good being a Saint whether we win or lose

There were some dark days though at the end of the RL and through the Wilde & Crouch era's. NC continually bangs on about stability and we have this at the club now. Long may it continue.

Excellent post.

I think most people were objecting to you saying that this will cost us money WHEN it goes wrong. Fair enough you may not be confident that Adkins can carry on his success (though surely it is better to give him a chance.) but to assume that he is going to fail based on not a lot is a little silly. In quite a few areas I agree with you, but I also think that by getting us promoted, Adkins deserves a chance to see what he can do in the league above. It's really unknown territory for him as he's never been expected to go for promotion in this league so it should be interesting.

I take on board what you state, perhaps i should have put 'IF' it goes wrong.

My point still remains however, the way he is put on a pedastool by some is so over the top.

I hope he is the one to take us further up the leagues, but some pontificating that he is the be all and end all is perhaps just as mad as someone saying he will fail, which is not what i have been saying.

No one knows what the future holds, but holding him in such high regard after a fairly successful period thus far, with a team that should have achieved promotion this season,is too cut and dry.

He is not beyond reproach and this transfer window coupled with next season will be the acid test, not what has just passed.

I hope he passes that test with flying colours.

I agree with this. I still think there is some question marks over his transfer record. Nguessen, Forte and Chaplow haven't had as much of an impact as some of the Pardew signings though they have had their moments. As you said, for me Adkins will be judged on his transfer policies and then his success in this league.

When Adkins took over, we had played five league games and had lost three of those; we had four points to our name and were in the relegation zone. For such a good squad, I'd say that was a pretty disastrous start to the season; the one saving grace was that it was still early enough for a new manager to turn things around. Many on here, I seem to recall, reckoned that our season was irreparably damaged after those six games. I remember all the calculations of likely points needed, points per game needed and so forth, along with the comments on just how hard it would be to achieve them. As it turns out, we achieved it all and more - few if any reckoned we'd need 92 points just to get second spot.

And don't underestimate the difficulties that Adkins faced. Taking over a group of players who were mostly signed by another manager, who are demoralised and playing very poorly, is no picnic - no matter how good those players are. You make it sound as if all Adkins had to do was turn up and that was that - I think that would have been a long way from the truth. After all, if it was all so easy with the squad we had, how come Wilkins lost every game he managed us in? Would we even have reached the play-offs had Wilkins remained in charge?

Adkins would have had to win the confidence and trust of the players, which would, I'm sure, have taken some time. Remember that he wasn't a big-name manager who could command instant respect from the players, in the way that Dalglish appears to have done at Liverpool.

I don't think that anyone is saying that Adkins has "performed a miracle with his hands tied" as you put it; but he has performed better than any manager in the league, bar one, in his time at Saints, which deserves rather more recognition than the damnation with faint praise which you consider appropriate.

Adkins deserves praise for getting us up. His task was made a lot easier however due to all the factors which meant we had by far the best squad and facilities in the league. By far. Adkins deserves praise for stopping the poor performances under the caretaker manager. If Adkins gets us playoffs next season then he deserves far more praise than he is getting at the moment. That's a long way off though.

I have and will continue to give him credit, and there is a difference between praising and credit imo,as and when i see fit.How much praise should i give him?should i follow others and praise him to the hilt?

I expected him to get us promoted,he did that...well done Nigel.

I think i have a video of me singing his name at the game last saturday, shall i post that?

Jeez, just because i don't subscribe to what others think makes me the target for abuse.

See my post ,169,that explains my position.I think that is a fair statement.

I have never said I had little or no faith in him. He was brought in as a long term appointment and I was initially underwhelmed because while I felt he could get us up from league one, he was largely unproven further than that. We weren't looking like automatic promotion contenders until our brilliant run at the end of the season and once that happened, I was quick to praise both the team and Adkins for that brilliant run. At no point did I not think he was capable of getting us promotion so thus far he has not outdone any expectations I had of him and I have been consistent in what I have said throughout the season. The fact remains that we came second and so didn't do as well as we could have done. I also think we need to improve some of our performances for next season and I think that with a few decent buys (like we saw under Pardew) that that will happen.

I've said more than once that Adkins has done well for gaining promotion (but also everyone realises that anything less than promotion would have been seen as a terrible underachievement.) The playoffs next season will have meant that Adkins has done really well and I will be one of the first to warmly congratulate him and the team if that is the case.

I wonder if lard and hypo thought pardew did a good job..?

This thread is not about AP.

But i will indulge you briefly.

AP's tenure at saints,for me,was a great time.

The club had had so much negativity and this turned into positivity, enjoyment, and brought back my belief in everything SFC,he did not do this alone however.

He formed a great squad of players and gave me a great day at Wembley.

There was nothing not to enjoy about his tenure imo.He laid some very good foundations for the season we have just had.

Now i hope Adkins picks up this mantle and carrys it forward.

Pardew days are over, now it Adkins' time.

even though we have shown better form this season than at any time last season....?

Totally different circumstances. We were at a significant disadvantage last season for a number of reasons which you are fully aware of and in what I believe was a stronger league than this year. Oviously something like that is going to come down to opinions and that is mine.

what about from about february onwards last season...our start would have no bearing on our form around then..?

adkins had to deal with far more injuries than pardew...but dont worry about that, pardew was better even though the stats etc point otherwise

after xmas, this season and last

pardew lost quite a few more points than adkins has...despite doing a better job at the same time...odd

lard, you cant hide from the FACT that you have been against him all season

claiming he would not get us up..the classic that the players dont play for him....

Not true,i have stood up and critised him when i felt nessessary, that does not indicate i am 'against him',perhaps that sood out because no one could see any faults in him.

And the players don't play for him was you taking a statement out of context to suit your agenda,i have explained it on numerous occasions, yet you appear to dissapear when i have explained my position,in fact you tend to turn a blind eye to it,how very strange.

Go back to the begining of this thread,my explanation is there i believe, others seem to understand, why not you.

Move on and enjoy the times just past and look forward to the ,hopefully, successful times ahead.

Why does this even matter? If you insist on going over old ground then Pardew had to contend with the psychological disadvantage of the minus ten points, stronger opponents on average than this season and had to allow for settling in of players both at the start of the season (where we had no pre season) and in January with Fonte etc. Adkins came in when players had had time to settle in, did not have minus ten points and the opponents on average were significantly weaker (in my opinion.) Yes he had to get the team playing for him but in my view this was an easier hurdle than what Pardew had to contend with.

Had Pardew stayed, I believe we would be in a very similar situation to now (this is presuming that Pardew had not become disillusioned). Not sure why you are trying to have an argument over something where there are so many external factors involved that it is impossible to say definitively whose opinion is right or wrong.

I think Adkins has done a good job. My opinion of excellence is higher than yours. I have given him praise for this season but now I prefer to look forward to next season and what I believe will mean he has really done an excellent job (the playoffs.) If you actually look there are a fair few people on here (and offline) who also feel this way. It is a difference of opinion, get over it.

Yes I'm hugely bitter. You aren't worth debating with, you just say things to try and manufacture an argument (and have admitted as such in the past.)

Had Pardew stayed and got second I would have been saying the exact same thing about him. My expectations of last season were significantly lower than this year. Excellence this season would have been running away with the league. Once again, it's a difference of opinion. Get over it.

Surely this all comes down to expectations of the individual?

If you thought at the start of the season we'd be lucky to make the play offs you'd be really happy with this season.

If you thought we'd by 20pts ahead of the rest of the league by christmas you'd feel a bit let down.

Same with the season before under AP. Regardless of the clubs aims all of us have our own ideas of what makes a good or bad season. Take me for example

Last season under AP I expected a relegation battle I got a cup final and seventh for me a good season.

This season I expected us to smash the league up and get promoted as champions I got promotion, good but a little dissapointed we weren't champs.

Next season top half finish and beat pompey twice is what I'm hoping for how I rate the season will depend on what happens.

You're all starting out with different expectations so it's no surprise you all have different ideas about how Nigel has done.
