What he was telling us and the media about the style he wanted to adopt was very rarely seen on the pitch. Mother Theresa should have got this squad promoted, especially when inheriting such a strong squad at that. Very well executed by Adkins, but the fawning over him of late has been nauseating, the real work begins from now. Let's just hope he sees out the contract and continues to have success, but it won't come as easy as it did this past season. Since his arrival, Adkins has transformed the team on the pitch, taking a club that was languishing near the foot of the table,(quote from OS) So why were we near the bottom of the table if Mother Theresa could of gotten us promoted? stug76 Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 I will remain consistant in my views and await to be proven wrong. Why don't you review the information at hand and then form a new opinion rather than doggedly defend an opinion that was made before the guy was even given a chance? To say that Mother Theresa could of got this squad promoted from the position it was in when Adkins took over is quite simply unfair. Adkins has done a terrific job. I can excuse him a bit of spin and hyperbole if he gets results. Even if he doesn't get us into the top half of the league next year I fully expect him to be hanging around for the long term. I think we'll do well though and wouldn't be surprised if we are still in with a shout of promotion next Easter. If we get relegated, that's a different story - I'll be getting my pitch fork out and joining the mob! Everything about the club is a positive as it ever has been - great news - COYS! Block 5 Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 In league one with a substantially stronger squad and resources than our rivals. Let's see how he does on a slightly more even playing field in the forthcoming season before claming him to be the messiah. Feet on the ground people, please. If you cast your mind back to the beginning of the season we were a shambles. Pre-season was counter-productive and Pardew's (alleged) shenanigans had split the dressing room. NA came in and swiftly managed to create a feeling of camaraderie within the team and from that came his winning mentality. Yes, we all know we had a strong squad of individuals, but that means nothing unless they are greater than the sum of their parts. My feet are firmly on the ground, but right now I wish they were on your face, you retard! Mods - infraction time?

up and away Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 Not sensational news, but very interesting all the same. Just think about it, what other clubs give their manager a contract extension after 3 months when they already have one for a few years? Bearing in mind that that our position and performance at that time does not guarantee automatic promotion, Cortese must have seen something special that Adkins can bring to his vision. Contract extensions don't necessarily tie a manager to the club longer, but they do show the manager that he is wanted as part of the permanent set up and a valued member of the club. That's very good man management from Cortese, especially when Adkins only really showed how good he was far later in the season. It also indicates that there was a big difference between Pardew and Adkins in Cortese's eyes. I was concerned that Adkins had not moved his family down as yet, but the backing from Cortese so early goes a long way in helping matters. Adkins has gone out of his way to state how Cortese behaved impecably during the contract negotiations with S****horpe, later quoting several times on their great working relationship. So maybe there was no hype in those comments and they are both working very closely and from the same page.

I heard and saw the proclomations of how we were going to endevour to play, yet we rarely scaled those heights,on occasions we managed to play to a higher standard but invariably for less than the duration of half a game. This was more than evident, when many remarked we had to up our game in the second half due to being attrociously **** poor in the first. Professor Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 For Lard, who may not of read the article... Since his arrival, Adkins has transformed the team on the pitch, taking a club that was languishing near the foot of the table, and producing a side capable of attacking, free flowing football with the resilience and patience required to beat teams that raise their game when playing Southampton. The side lost just once at St. Mary's in the league following his appointment, with the spirit created in the team reflected by the fantastic continued support of the fans that have backed them so well home and away this season, which culminated in last weekend's 3-1 win over Walsall in front of over 31,000 supporters. I'm very happy with the job that Adkins has done and the extended contract is well deserved but the hype over it comes straight out of the Alastair Campbell School of Journalism. As Brighton discovered the other week, if you over-egg the pudding, the egg can end up all over your face, but success for Adkins is success for all of us as fans, so there's nothing I want more than for Nigel to become a top man in the Prem as manager of the Saints. All the same, we shouldn't forget that when Pardew was sacked after 3 league games, following the 4-0 away win at Bristol Rovers, the team wasn't 'languishing' as Mr Sibley would have it. We did sink badly during the 'no-manager interregnum' but the transformation under Adkins has been achieved by the same team that Pardew built except for a couple of squad players on loan. The next test for Nigel is the additions to the team this summer, and how to intergrate two or three quality players who must inevitable push aside some established team members. It wouldn't surprise me if this two or three that have been mentioned become four or five as suggested in the Jacob Friis-Hansen interview, as NC and NA may be understating the changes so as not to upset too many of the present team while the end of season partying is still under way. A confident manager and team, with a few additions, could see us actually have a good start to a season for the first time in (almost) living memory! So, four and a half years - good decision. dubai_phil Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 This IS good news and also big news. Just because many fans were underwhelmed at his appointment, NA was a well thought of up and coming manager, hell even old saggy chops said he was one of the best of the new breed. (But then he does talk a lot) The trip to Vegas, the new contract shows that NC understands how to reward SUCCESS. That is a very important mindset to have - as opposed to rewarding past reputation. It shows people they will get more IF they stay with us. Also, many other club Chairmen will have seen NA come to Saints, THEY will have understood the scale and the pressures he took on and how he moulded someone elses players into a winning and consistent team. The new contract will make it much harder for a PL chairman to poach him AND will make NA happier to stay for the long term challenge. Good news, again shows foresight for once

Matthew Le God Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 Season ticket price news and new kit news are guaranteed to be along at some point in the summer. What has been up in the air for the last 20 years of being a Saints fan is if the manager is here for the long term or not. A managerial appointed or contract extension is the most important decision a club can make as it shapes the whole direction of the club. I fail to see why anyone would be underwhelmed by this news given the last 20 years of a Saints managerial merry-go round. In the 36 years between 1955 and 1991 Saints had 3 managers, in the 20 years between 1991 and 2011 Saints have had roughly 20 managers. Some long term stability with a talented manager is more than welcome! Makes it easier to progress, sign new players etc if the manager is secure in his job. Lets hope the contract is honoured by both parties and is a successful period in the clubs history.

Sad reflection on many of you,you must be very proud. Reserved in your admiration? I can't see the slightest hint of admiration for Adkins in any of your posts. If, as you suggest, anyone could and should have got us promoted this season, how about Dean Wilkins? He was doing the job before Adkins came in - are you seriously saying that he would have turned things around in the same way that Adkins did? If not, then your contention, as well as being facile, is also demonstrably wrong. If you present a reasoned argument, it's likely to be met with reasoned responses by most, if not all. But you haven't and don't; you simply twist things around to fit your unchanging, unchangeable view. You decided at the outset that Adkins wasn't the man for the job, and since then have steadfastly refused him any credit for anything achieved and berated him for any number of perceived failings. People do not have a go at you simply because your views differ from theirs; it's because of the way that you express them and your stubborn refusal to change one iota, even in the face of overwhelming evidence. Just look at your first post on this thread as an example - your assumption is plain, that everything will go tits up under Adkins at some point. The fact that he has out-performed all other managers in this division since his appointment cuts no ice with you; in your mind he's not good enough, and all the evidence to the contrary will never sway you. If were bottom of the champ at christmas next season (I don't think we will be be but if) than Nigels contract won't be any more useful to him than all the other contracts prevoius manager have had. SNSUN Posted 14 May, 2011 Share Posted 14 May, 2011 Great news imo. Managerial stability is what this club has been lacking for a while and kudos to Cortese for taking the risk and to Adkins for believing he can bring us success. Yes question marks may remain over his transfer nous, as we haven't seen that yet really, but we're a club on the up with a good young manager that other clubs can't pilfer on the cheap, and if he does get us to the Premiership, the same questions asked of Paul Lambert's future shouldn't be asked of Adkins.
