I think it is now time for us to move on.

We are clearly now aiming to fly very high in the Football World.

We have the players jetting off to Vegas. We (appear) to have a new European Scouting Network.

So clearly a Bus is no longer going to cut

All about the getting onto the FLIGHT now

Airplane time I believe.

(Flashes of Nazareth and getting on this plane tonight spring to mind)

I hope Flybe are still available, why oh why did we cill their sponsorship doh!!!

Apologies if this has been posted already - I skimmed the thread titles and couldn't see anything similar...

According to this Danish footy website, Jacob Friis-Hansen (who stepped down as Liverpool scout in January 2011) is the new Director of European Recruitment at SFC:

http://www.bold.dk/nyt/Friis-Hansen-skal-hjaelpe-Saints-i-PrL

Translation of a few selected paragraphs:

""It's a new job title that hasn't been used in the club for some seasones. I will be a kind of sports director on the European market. This means, I will be responsible for finding players and starting a scouting-department with full time and part time employees. It's an incredibly exciting job and I am looking forward to get going", Friis-Hansen tells bold.dk"

[...]

""The Club has a clear ambition of getting to the PL, so we need to find five or six quality players over the summer. I will probably need to find three players that in theory are good enough for the PL, but has the mentality to play in the Championship in one or maximally two seasons, which is the time frame for promotion", says Friis-Hansen."

[...]

""The club is owned by the Liebherr family. They are incredibly rich and are aware that it will cost money. On short terms the goal is PL, but on the longer term they also want to play in the Champions League and be part of the top clubs in England. With their fortune backing them up they are about the fifth richest club in England, so it is realistic - look at Norwich who did it this year without the financial strength we have...""

""Furthermore the club has an academy on line with the very best in England. They have developed players like Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, which tells a lot about the quality. And there is a willingness to expand the academy, the facilities and the stadium if necessary.""

"The SFC-team is already very talented with names like AL, MS and not least AOC. The latter Friis-Hansen expects to be sold to a larger club for a hefty sum within long..."

Thanks Lazlo78 - very interesting posting.

And, harking back to the halycon days of the AP demise, think the response to this news at that time would have gone something like.....

Hang on.

This is rubbish, more evidence of an evil plan by The Arch Bond Villain's number two to undermine our manager. Everyone knows that the manager should be in charge of everything to do with finding and recruiting players. There's a perfectly good airport in Southampton, and NA will know everyone in football and can jet off at a moments notice to scout and sign the best players in the world. No other teams in England have this stupid system. NC out.

Or words to that effect.

How success changes opinions eh? 8)

Am I the only one who is a bit meh about this? Benitez signed some absolute dross and this guy must have played some part in that surely? I know our ambitions are currently a few rungs below Liverpools and on the face of it he sounds good but nothing to get all moist about!!

Absolutely right. Not only was there some absolute dogsh.ite signed when he was at Liverpool, but he's also committed the cardinal sin of having a big mouth in his first interview (if this is true). Cortese won't (and shouldn't) appreciate the AOC comments and general 'openess' of the interview. Completely at odds with how the club is run these days.

Big Meh!

So basically he's our Comolli? A good move from Cortese if confirmed. I think this shows he means business. Cant imagine many sides in the Championship having scouting networks across Europe.

No no, Comolli's their Terry Cooper. :)

They do say that if something looks too good to be true it probably....... Think I'll wait until this is announced on the OS, or Friis-Hansen's name gets added to the staff list before celebrating what would be a very positive move by the club.

So you think the Danish newspaper made up the interview?

Friis-Hansen to help Saints reach the PrL

The former national team player Jakob Friis-Hansen has been appointed as Director of the European Recruitment in Southampton, a club with great traditions, which he will try to help reach the Premier League already next season.

The former national team player Jakob Friis-Hansen quit as scout of Liverpool in January but has now found a new and exciting job in Southampton, a club with great traditions, who recently ensured automatic promotion from League One to the Championship. Friis-Hansen has been appointed as Director of the European Recruitment with immediate effect.

- It's a newly created job function that hasn't been used in the club for some seasons now. I will be a kind of director of football on the European market. This means, I will be responsible for finding players and starting a scouting department with full-time and part-time employees. It's an incredibly exciting job and I am looking forward to get going, Friis-Hansen tells bold.dk

After 27 years in the finest league in England, Southampton were relegated in 2005 and subsequently took a slide down in the third best league in a period marked by great financial troubles. But both League One and financial troubles are in the past now, and Friis-Hansen will be under great pressure from day one.

- The Club has a clear ambition of getting directly to the Premier League, so we need to find five or six quality players over the summer. I will probably need to find three players that in theory are good enough for the Premier League, but have the mentality to play in the Championship in one or maximally two seasons, which is the time frame for promotion", says Friis-Hansen.

On the surface, this could sound like an overly ambitious target, but the club has the means and the facilities to make these dreams come true.

- The club is owned by the Swiss Liebherr family. They are incredibly rich and are aware that it will cost money. On short terms the goal is Premier League, but on the longer term they also want to play in the Champions League and be part of the top clubs in England. With their fortune backing them up the club is about the fifth richest club in England, so it is realistic - just look at Norwich who did it this year without the financial strength we have.

- Furthermore the club has an academy on line with the very best in England. They have developed players like Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, which tells a lot about the quality. And there is a willingness to expand the academy, the facilities and the stadium if necessary.

The Southampton team is already very talented featuring players like Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin and not least teenager Alex Chamberlain. However, the latter Friis-Hansen expects to be sold for a hefty sum to a larger club within long.

Exactly. To me, the article is interesting because it gives an impression on what vision Cortese sells to a new employee. But I actually think Matthew Le God's link on page 1 is more interesting, as it gives an impression on what Friis-Hansen brings to the table!

This being the key bit...

"I have built an enormously powerful network in my time at Liverpool. I worked regularly in Italy, Germany, Spain, Holland and France over the last few years, I've also got contacts in countries like Cameroon and Ghana."

This appointment really does look very special, and even if Friis-Hansen does not get the job after going public, if this post is being created that would be very good news in itself, almost regardless of who gets the job as long as the person has the right credentials. Its the determination to start looking for players who would be the basis of a PL side that looks exciting because despite our present squad having some very good players, the gap to the PL is shown every year by the player changes that clubs going up or down have to make.

Cortese may decide that the interview, despite being in Danish, has pre-empted his announcement and he could decide not to appoint Mr Friis-Hansen, although I hope that is not the case as F-H looks ideal. Although people say that as well as some stars, he also found some less successful players for Liverpool, its not all down to him as any club, including Saints, has plenty of other people able to give second opinions about any player suggested to them.

Hopefully, the lack of an OS announcement is caused by the trip to the USA, but if we haven't heard by the end of the week, it will start to look doubtful.

I can be useful at times. ;) :D

No its just annoyingly pedantic.

Great ambition IMO from the club, hopefully this is a sign that the funding and ambition is really still there and now we are in the Championship I am genuinely so excited.

My only worry is that Benitez' signings hardly filled me with any optimism !!

Also Chez, Re - Chamberlain, I think we all know that in reallity Chamberlain will be off before too long, I just hope he wasn't privvy to some definative news regarding him.

Have just used google to translate the article and the last paragraph doesn't mention Oxo leaving for big money.

It reads:

Southampton team is already quite talented with names like Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin and not least the teenager Alex Chamberlain.

It's been edited. When first posted it said the club expect AC to leave before long.

"I worked regularly in Italy..." I was out for an apperitivo tonight [no footie training due to me achilles tendonitis] and was reading the paper and an article about the finances of Italian footie. To summarise, it is also in the doo-doos as although income has gone up a lot they haven't been controlling their costs which have gone up a lot quicker. Wages have gone up to over 80% on income. Mentioned the new 'fair play' finance provisions etc etc. It makes me think that Saints could be in a good position to get some players from over here given the crowds we get: I don't think fans realise how much better they are at SMS compared with most of Itaalian football - serie A included.

Are people seriously going to cheer the appointment of a European scout? It really isn't that big news. It's good that we are finally getting some sort of scouting system abroad sorted, as we haven't had one for a while but it isn't groundbreaking.

No it's not big news and it's not groundbreaking, you're right. But during a period where things are a bit quiet I personally think it's worth the club running as a story if it is true. It's another move that shows a bit more ambition from the club. Personally, it's a story that I'd be happy to read about on the offical site confirming it as fact. I won't cheer about it but I'll be pleased if true.

same thing i found , nothing about Oxo leaving full translation below.

-----------------------

The former midfielder Jacob Friis-Hansen has been appointed Director of the European Recruitment in tradition club Southampton, which he will assist in the Premiership as early as next season.

The former midfielder Jacob Friis-Hansen stopped by scout at Liverpool in January but has now got itself a new and exciting jobs in the tradition of the club Southampton, who recently secured the direct promotion from League One to Championship.

Friis-Hansen is employed immediately as Director of the European Recruitment.

- It is a newly created post which you have not had the club through some seasons now. I must be some kind of sporting director at the European market. That is to say that I am responsible for finding players and create a scouting department with full-and part-time employees. It is an incredibly exciting job, and I am looking to get started, "says Friis-Hansen bold.dk.

Southampton moved after 27 years in England's top flight in 2005 out and then gliding down in the third best series in a period marked by major economic problems. But both the League One and the economic woes are history now, and Friis-Hansen come under huge pressure from day one.

- The club has a clear objective to move directly up in the Premier League, and therefore we're going to take 5:00 to 6:00 quality players over the summer. I will probably find three players who in principle are good enough to play Premier League, but have the mentality to play in a Championship or a maximum of two seasons, which is the deadline to move up, "says Friis-Hansen.

This might sound like a somewhat overly ambitious goal, but the club has the means and facilities to keep the dreams into reality.

- The club is owned by the Swiss Liebherr family. They are wealthy and willing, it will cost. Short-term objective is the Premier League but in the longer term, they also in the Champions League and dominate the top of English football.

- In addition the club has an academy in line with the very best in England. They have among other things, developed players like Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale and it says little about quality. And we are committed to developing both academy, facilities and stadium, if necessary.

Southampton team is already quite talented with names like Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin and not least the teenager Alex Chamberlain.
