The Tichfield Mill and Talisman are both good a little out of the area you said though, quite a few in the forest too... dunno about eastleigh, someone told me the cricketers but no personal experience.

The White Horse at Ampfield is superb. Bear and Ragged Staff at Michelmarsh isn't bad. The Cricketers in Eastleigh recently improved 100x (but it used to be ****e) ;), The Chilbolton Arms

If you are looking for cheap and cheerful, how about the Plough in Bursledon/Netley?

Used to do a two for one deal and the food wasnt too bad either.

They've just retrofitted that place and have been taken over by "fayre and square" food seems a bit better and i think its 2for a tenner now!

You could try the Bugle in Twyford, or maybe the Fox (formerly the Fox and Hounds) up the top of Crowd Hill outside Fair Oak. The food in both is very good. Or there's the Fishers Pond, also very good but a little pricey. The Prince Consort in Netley could be worth a try, though I haven't been there for a while.

White Swan in Mansbridge has a good carvery and bar meals, nice to sit outside in the sun by the river with a beer and a meal, plus they keep the dirty filthy smokers in their own area

Would echo the Talisman in Park Gate; same menu as the Seven Stars that I raved about on the best meal ever thread.

The Robin Hood in Durley is v good.

Is it still owned by the two Aussie gay guys?

On a visit several years ago, they had Kangaroo steaks and Emu on the menu.

I'm not inviting you all to write your own punchline to this. It is a genuine question.

Try the Dog and Crook at Brambridge. Marco-Pierre White has eaten there on several occasions and reckons it is very good. Whatever you do, don't order a steak well-done or Dan the Chef will probably bury a cleaver in your head...

The Clump inn is always pretty good, gets busy with office folk at lunch time,

I think the clump is now the chilworth arms, and is currently being refurbished for the umpteenth time?

If we're talking southampton/eastleigh area, you really cant beat the Concorde. I know its a club, but the Moldy Fig bar is open to the public, theres plenty of parking, easy to get to, and the food is better than just about any pub ive been to. Cricketers isnt a bad shout and neither is the Swan, but theyre not in the same league as the Concorde.

Nearer the southampton side, theres always my regular watering hole, the Ship at redbridge. Good food and reasonably priced, can recommend it thoroughly. Gets very busy most lunchtimes.

Nothing like a bit of chef snobbery. I think its much worse to be a "hero" and order your steak blue.

Nah, Dan's OK really, he just thinks that if you overcook a steak it becomes tasteless and tough. I always order my steak blue though; rather than being a hero, I actually prefer it that way. My wife used to eat steak medium but has 'converted' and now eats it blue as well, as do my older kids.
