Most of you are well aware that I am employed at the Ford plant in Southampton.

Currently the future of the plant is under review and there is a distinct fear that Ford will close the plant. If they do so it will mean that Ford no longer assemble ANY vehicle in this country!

A petition has been raised for submittal to the P.M. in which we ask for the Government to talk to F.M.C.

about investment and regeneration of the Southampton Assembly Plant.

If you feel so inclined please do click on the link to sign the online petition.

Thanks in anticipation of your support

Done, hope it works out mate.

Have you asked Mods if this can be a sticky in the lounge? More awareness if seen more?

A good point! I chose this forum because it is motor oriented. I also wondered, if elsewhere, that it might attract attention from the more vacuous minded on here!

As it is it's doing fine, I have put the same request out on all the Yahoo! Soul groups I am in and the response has been overwhelming!

So, what about this Mods? Do you think it may be a good idea?

The closure of Ford would certainly be a big blow to the local economy.

Couldn't they lengthen the runway at Eastleigh if the knocked Ford's down??

With the congestion at the 2 London airports and the good motorway links I think that might be a prime target for any government.

Best of luck with the petition

The plant actually doesn't reach back that far. The flight path doesn't even go over the rear car park. They would have to put the M27 in a tunnel to lengthen the runway, also it may be then too close to housing.

Let's hope they don't get the chance to even think about things like that.

Thanks Col, your avatar? You seem to be getting bigger each time I see it! Are you trying to catch me up? If so, give up mate 'cause you'll never make it :D, there's only one BFB!

There's only one BFB, wrong.:):)

Signed, good luck to you.

Getting really fed up with industry upping sticks to the third world.

Precisely why I wouldn't even contemplate buying anything made by Dyson. Bastard.

Ever read how Dyson tried to convince British backers that he had a great product in his revolutionary vacuum cleaner..? He took it to Hoover, Electrolux as well, in fact everyone turned him down. Then some Japanese backers, with the obvious necessary imagination, came along, and the rest is history. Tbh, I don't begrudge his overwhelming success one little bit. And it certainly woke up a few people in this country who invest to think outside of the box. And for several years, all of Dyson's assembly was in this country. The Dyson company has very good working practices, proper apprenticeships, and a very good reputation. And they are still essentially British. I wouldn't knock them that hard. After all, there are plenty of companies in the world that have thier production facilities in the far east. What about every time you put on a pair of trainers..?

Well Done ESB!

I joined this forum just to post the petition link- to find you have already beaten me to it!

I thought this would be a good place to find support for the 'Home of the Transit', so many Saints fans have either worked there or known someone that has.

In 1976 there were 5000 people at the plant, it was one of the biggest employers in the city and one of the first places the Saints visited to show off the Cup.

Big thanks to all who have signed and to the Mods for the sticky:)

954 signed up so far, because there are over 200 signitures everyone who has signed will be emailed a response whe the petition closes either from the PM or Ministerial Dept concerned.

Lets see if we can get over a 1000!

Unfortunately it's basic economics. No petition is suddenly going to make the FMC powers that be change their mind.

A bit like an Apple ad really. All style and no substance.

The petition is to ask the Government to intercede on behalf of the workers and maybe make Ford realise how much their employment is needed in the Southampton area.

I'm with Ford on this one. If they can produce cars or vans cheaper abroad than they should move production abroad. It's a simple matter of economics.

same avatar Scu, gotta hurt?

See that red band behind Rupert the bear? Yeah it was blue when i first acquired it. I went to a bit of trouble to change it to red so as to remove any trace of the blue few...

However this numpty is trying to be funny (check the main board threads as to the history of why he has so hilariously copied my avatar) and good luck to him...

I suspect it's another incarnation of Sundance Beast personally...still i'm sure Boj isn't too fussed about gimps like this as long as they pay up their five pounds...

And i turned down a night down the pub for this...foolishness...

That and Credit Crunch yes...

Oh and it's pretty obvious that this thread goes a little further than mere economics...if that were the case then we are well and truely f::cked as a country...

Better pray that one day soon YOUR job / livelyhood doesn't suddenly disapear overseas then. I suspect you won't have such a cavalier attitude then.

Your point is?

Good luck to India...but when we let the economic desires of the large companies come ahead of the needs of the country as a whole then we're on a hiding to nothing...

But why should we bail out Ford - an American owned company?
