Hope they announce it a bit sooner this year! I did hear a tour of Italy was on the cards.

back in around 93/94 we played a pre-season tournament in the alps with Juventus and Torino, how good would it be to do that again!

Ooooh, yes please! An hour by car (or maybe train if beer and wine are involved!). I'd even try and get some interpreting work for Saints, given I'm not teaching during that period.

Where did you hear that, any credence to the rumour?

Think the games were played at Juve's training ground somewhere in the Alps.

I and about 9 other Saints fans attended those two games I drove through the Alps to get there with another 3 in car

Neither of games was at Juve's training ground

One was played at the Town ground in St Vincent against Juventus the other in Minicipal stadium against Torino

Lost 3-1 to Juve after taking the lead, and 1-0 to Torino

Saints did not announce any details of the games, (as still probles with Engalnd fans in Italy at he time) but we managed to find out via a contact in Italy and then got all the details from Graham Hiley at the Echo as one of my mates was a pal of his.

Great trip and met the Saints team in a bar in St Vincent the night before the Juve game, they were extremly surprised to see us there.

Most importantly pre-season must be designed so that our first team squad is ready to start playing competitive football in August with our winning habit having been maintained. Whatever teams we are taking on in friendlies must be with the intention of winning. 90 minutes of football can be arranged with two saints elevens taking on each other at Staplewood, but it is doing little or nothing towards the confidence of players.

Remember last year when so many claimed that all our lacklustre losing performances "didn't matter". Has anybody still got those naive beliefs?

I think it would be great to see some top class italian teams, but not beating Saints in friendlies.

I'm not sure they did matter. Looking at how the season went, the 9pts Wilkins lost are what mattered if he'd even of managed 3pts at of 9 we could have been champions.

Still I agree with the sentiment I'd like us to do a pre season right for once, no need for trips abroad or any of that. Just football games with a settled side against tough (but not to tough) opposition,to build fitness and confidence.

Sod all that, where is going to be best for a p**s up?

Every year, by the time the pre season friendlies come around I am usually so desperate to get some Saints action they seem like important or massive games!

This year I am going to have a summer away from thinking about Saints.

Probably...

Rather not Switzerland after last years appalling pre season.

I'm not sure the location is to blame for that...

QPR and Norwich would make decent opponents for us in preseason. Big tough sides that will let us know what we have in store for the season coming.

Know the municipal stadium well: my team used to play there when we were in Italian women's Serie B (wasn't signed on though) and it's 20 minutes away from me. Now that would be _even_ better!

Bit random. Where did you hear that from?

Local Pub Landlord showed me a leaflet, it was some do he is attending and it said the first 50 to show up would get 2 free tickets to see Saints v Durham on 19 July. Just wondered if anybody else saw this or knew anything

If Saints really are playing Durham on 19th July I doubt it will be the first team, more likely a Southampton XI using development players and the under 18's like they do every year against non league teams. The first team will probably be abroad at that point of pre-season.

Maybe not, we could be doing the North and Scotland this year.

Explains everything really.

Hahahaha f*ck sake what a moron, hants v Durham not easily confused by Durham v saints. Can't believe I went ahead and booked train tickets for Durham that day, what a waste they are now :-(

Day out at the cricket then. Only goes to show you should never ever believe anything you read on here.

If there's one thing this season has proved it's that pre-season really isn't that important.

Last season we had people bleating on about "Pardew had no pre-season" until about February, we won the trophy and were in play off form. And the same thing happened this year with Pardew's poor pre-season and then Adkins of course having no pre-season (and no time to "bed-down", "settle in" and all the rest of that guff). We got promoted with a game to spare.

We might have a good pre-season, we might have a rubbish one. You can bet your arse we'll buy more players in the last week of August than in the whole of July, because that's how the market works.

Will any of it matter a damn in April next season after eight months of football? Not really. Anyone really remember how good our pre-season was in Strachan's last season when we were fourth at Christmas? Anyone remember the pre-season in 1975 before we won the cup? Or in 1983 before we finished second?

So my only plea is to stop working pre-season into this miracle period that decides our fate before a ball has been even kicked.

Go and beat some Norwegian team 8-1. Whoopee-frigging do. Lose 1-0 to Cheltenham Town. It's a disaster. Don't sign anyone at all until the week of our first game. I want to kill myself.

Pre-season, Schme-season. Roll on August.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but any news on any fixtures yet? Apparently Durham on 19 July?

Would be nice to get sniff of a few dates in the next week or so before everyone disappears. Would show the pre-season intent is right this year, compared to last summer's debacle.
