Doctoroncall Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 Hotel Jenny, Klepferhof, 68220 hagenthal le bas, Frankreich. Near Basel, superb food and wine. A bit closer to home Auberge de Luc, Welwyn Garden City, Herts. Again great food and wine.
Deano6 Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 Here http://theviewny.com/# The Head waiter realised I like beer so kept recommding some of the local Brooklyn stuff - lovely stuff. Great food - fantastic sweets. That's literally 3 blocks from where I'm sitting (at work) right now!
Wes Tender Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 Had the taster menu at Le Manoir, Raymond Blanc's place for my 50th. That was over £220 (including one bottle of wine) for two nearly a dozen years ago, but very, very good. A couple of more local restaurants that have good food at decent prices and which have been mentioned elsewhere, Egan's at Lymington and Truffles in Fareham. bridge too far Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 We don't do 'names' or posh, although I did once eat at the White House in London and that was pretty impressive. Best ever meal we've ever had? A little place on the Canal du Midi (Le Chat qui Rire) - like being in someone's house, no matching china, but the most amazing food ever. And a quay side taverna near Tolofon, mainland Greece. Fish just landed - very simply cooked but out of this world!

Channon's Sideburns Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 Sideb, thanks for the tips. Might check them out. Any others between there and X'church? I hear Terra Vina in Ashurst is quite good as is Verveine in Milford-on-Sea. I note that the Jetty have dropped the prices on their wine list. That stopped me from going as they were truly ridiculous - I think £65 for a Sancerre. Limewood still seem to be more expensive than London There's a Thai restaurant in Milford on Sea which is good, just by the level crossing. Also, The Manor at Burton is cracking..you get to it via the dual carriageway between B&Q in Xch & the Sainsburys roundabout. Oh and another Lymo one - The Mayflower by Bath Road - plenty of parking, plus they do a gr8 BBQ at the weekends during the summer.

Wines are exceptional but reasonably priced. The owner, Gerrard Basset, is the current world champion sommelier. His head sommelier is the the current British Champion. They really know their stuff. If you go, ignore the wine list and let them choose for you - you won't regret it.

angelman Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 We always go to Pebble Beach Had a bad meal there. Both me and the Mrs thought it was dreadful and wouldn't go back. Maybe we should.....! When we asked (rhetorically) whether our mille feuille was supposed to be burnt, we were told they all come out of the pan like that. The restraunt decor looks like something out of a 1970 old people's home. They had no idea how to arrange the seating in the restaurant so felt that you were permanently sitting in a corridor. But other people seem to have had better experiences. There's a Thai restaurant in Milford on Sea which is good, just by the level crossing. Wifey likes Thai, so we might have to check it out. The Manor is only a mile and a bit from me and the kids like going there so they can get a pizza. Can't recommend Terravina enough. Good food, great service. Wines are exceptional but reasonably priced. The owner, Gerrard Basset, is the current world champion sommelier. His head sommelier is the the current British Champion. They really know their stuff. If you go, ignore the wine list and let them choose for you - you won't regret it. Terravina is on the list to go to. I couldn't possibly let a wine waiter choose for me booze is my business so I have to choose for myself. GB's kids go to school with mine so I guess I should go there - problem is is getting wifey to drive back.
Petersfield Saint Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Recently: Gaucho, just off Piccadilly Circus. Best steak I've ever had. Not so recently: Schimmels - lovely little restaurant in Wustrow, a small coastal resort in North East Germany. Regularly: The Seven Stars just outside Petersfield on the A272. Hall & Woodhouse menu - fantastic upmarket pub grub, reasonably priced and always brilliant service!
Saint-scooby Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Where do I start. Its quite hard to say just one, had some amazing meals in some odd places and some well known too. Some weeks ago I was in Oxford, feeling a bit peckish I tried Ruchi, its near the station, for the price and what I had it was amazing, try "dosa" They are a few opening up now, problem is this place looks like a Kebab shop. iansums Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 We always go to Pebble Beach Marine Drive New Milton, for special occasions I was a little disappointed by Pebble Beach although the others in my party were quite happy. We went to the Conqueror Inn at the East Close Hotel (A35 from XChurch to Lyndhurst) the other night only because we had a two-for-one voucher. We weren't expecting much as we'd had reports of bad food when they first opened. We were pleasantly surprised how good the food was although the service was a little poor and the menu limited. Great Indian in Bridge St. XChurch called Masala Bay. Best meal for me, Coeur de Filet in Costa Adeje in Tenerife, great food at a reasonable price. Cestrian Saint Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 L'Gueuleton in Dublin. Fantastic food. None of this arty farty tiny portions presented in some fancy way. Healthy portions, well presented, superbly cooked food. Knowledgable friendly staff. Highly recommended.
angelman Posted 11 May, 2011 Share Posted 11 May, 2011 A couple of more local restaurants that have good food at decent prices and which have been mentioned elsewhere, Egan's at Lymington and Truffles in Fareham. Went to Egan's last night. Food was good but a little too pricey I thought, but not overly so. I guess all prices are going up everywhere. Wine list leaves a lot to be desired but I can live with that. Would go back again. Funny, my Mrs used to work in that building about 20 years ago when it was called Peelers.
