ladysaint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 for you, think mine must have been the recent Brighton away win, never expected it and once we secured that win IMO promotion was secured.
PaulSaint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 (edited) I reckon our away victory at Bompey started a confident & ultimately victorious run-in! Edited 3 May, 2011 by PaulSaint
Nexstar Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Walsall away for me, because after that we looked strong in most games, played as a unit and won 12 of the next 14 games
The9 Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 For me it was when Saints ran out at Home Park wearing black, thus making Delldays look like a gimp. Oh alright then, it was when Kelvin held 5 fingers up when walking off after our 41st league match - showed me that not only did the players know what was needed to get promotion, they were actually planning on winning every match and weren't going to rely on Huddersfield dropping points. From that point to this, they have won every match.
Window Cleaner Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Probably Oldham away, they were playing well up until then, made sides change their game against us.
Minty Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Walsall away for me, because after that we looked strong in most games, played as a unit and won 12 of the next 14 games I agree to an extent. We learnt more from the defeats, and used them to focus on what was required.
Spades Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Gota be Walsall away. Since then we have only drawn 1 and lost 1... everything else has been WIN WIN WIN! Since they did us such a big favour before, maybe we should let them beat us on saturday so they stay up... yeah right! COYR!
Mr Saints Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Was thinking about this earlier, apart from the obvious MK Dons and Brighton wins I think the midweek win at Exeter was a massive boost. 1 nil down going into the last 10 mins and ending up with the win proved to us this team can win ugly.
Wurzel Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Starting to sing OWTSGMI at the correct speed. The more that sing it properly the better we play
SouthportSaint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 An early turning point was the 1-0 win at Sheff Wed. It was vital that the Adkins regime got an early win after the controversy of Pardew's departure. We had not scored a goal for weeks. Had we lost that day we would have gone bottom of the division and a dangerously long way from the leading group.
dubai_phil Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 After reading some of the old threads I'll go for a really subtle one... Defining moment? The fact that we stopped commenting on/speculating about Les Reed's role. Never noticed it until just now but we were paranoid about his involvement in the team and in transfers and since NA's appointment has anyone actually heard if he's still at the club?? Think it shows how the mindset changed slowly but surely. Oh and the other one based on results & the emergence of the fantastic team spirit? Puncheon being shipped out
Minty Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Puncheon going was a very good thing... perhaps not a defining moment, but it just went to show that no one was bigger than the squad (not just the team) that Adkins was creating. How often have any of us known that someone has been a disruptive influence in the workplace, but management have done nothing about it... and how does that make us feel? Well done on that one Nigel.
dellboypete Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Walsall away for me, because after that we looked strong in most games, played as a unit and won 12 of the next 14 games Seems a popular choice!! Which I agree with. Anyone who was there will still be shaking their head in disbelief that we lost that one. And apart from the unexplained hiccup at Rochdale, that defeat at Walsall appeared to really galvanise the minds of the whole saints squad and management team. Of course the real defining game was yesterday - confirming promotion. Again lucky enough to be there and I'm still buzzing.
Under Weststand Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Whilst the Brighton come back was immense, the defining game has to be 3-2 against MK Dons they'd been on a great run & the way it was turned round from 2-0 down gave the team the belief that they could recover from anything & the mental strength to just keep going & trusting their own skills to overcome in the end.
cynicalsaint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Huddersfield missing an open goal to go one (two?) nil up early on in the game at SMS.
carljack Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Huddersfield missing an open goal to go one (two?) nil up early on in the game at SMS. This game was pivotal, FACT! we were one down and then proceeded to rip them a new one,Guly D was quality in this game, for the first time we saw what he could offer ,in this game we saw a very decent League one side put to the sword by an even better one it could have been six or seven one, this was the day I really believed we could get promoted.
1976_Child Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Adkins arriving. and the blonde sitting in front of me. Always has a loose top on and I get a good look at her jugs every game. ****ing hope she renews her ST.
Rasiak-9- Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 This, really happy I went to that game. Honestly thought a win could be the turning point. 1-0 vs Sheff Wednesday - got things started, boosted the morale and confidence and got us going under Adkins. Proved we had the mettle to grind out results like that away at the big teams 6-0 vs Oldham - showed just how good we could be when firing on all cylinders and genuinely showed that we were a class above the rest in this League 3-1 vs Bournemouth - going a goal down to your local rivals and coming back to win comfortably really showed that we could well go up automatically and not just settle for the playoffs 3-2 vs MK Dons - for obvious reasons 2-1 vs Brighton - ditto. Those I'd say were the most important/defining results of the season
bender Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Walsall away for me, because after that we looked strong in most games, played as a unit and won 12 of the next 14 games Good point. I remember going away to Colchester that following weekend. You could tell whilst warming up they were knew they had to sort out taking their chances in front of goal.
Jez Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Oh alright then, it was when Kelvin held 5 fingers up when walking off after our 41st league match - showed me that not only did the players know what was needed to get promotion, they were actually planning on winning every match and weren't going to rely on Huddersfield dropping points. Are you sure he wasn't just waving considering he has 5 fingers on his hand? My personal defining moment would be beating Bournemouth, as it propelled us into 2nd for the first time, and knocked Bompey out of their stride, and set us up to (eventually) remain 2nd.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 3-2 MK Dons This definitely. At 2-0 down I felt it was going away from us so to hit back in the last half hour, as we did, seemed to give the players the additional belief they needed.
mitch01 Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Are you sure he wasn't just waving considering he has 5 fingers on his hand? My personal defining moment would be beating Bournemouth, as it propelled us into 2nd for the first time, and knocked Bompey out of their stride, and set us up to (eventually) remain 2nd. I thought Orient was the first time we hit 2nd? That was a massive result, too, with Huddersfield and Pboro drawing.
Appy Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Are you sure he wasn't just waving considering he has 5 fingers on his hand? We were second when we beat Exeter 4-0.
Foxstone Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 The comeback away at Brighton for me.. Told me we were tough enough mentally to see it through, and I felt nothing but confident that we would make the automatic promotion spot our own.
S-Clarke Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 The MK Dons game, I think that gave the fans and the players the mental belief and lift that they can win promotion. If we'd have lost that 2-0 it would have really affected us mentally IMO. Since that game we've been like a juggernaunt tbh. (apart from the rochdale game)
Dig Dig Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Going to go for defining moments instead of just one: 1) Appointing NA...had a good feeling about him from the start 2) MK Dons 3-2. Really started to believe after this point. Great game which showed how far the club has come. Last season at 2-0 down we would almost certainly have lost and the fans would have turned on the side. 3) Brighton 2-1.. the one game most people thought we would drop points and the reality is that we couldn't afford to!
doddisalegend Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Hudders away we got tonked after that we changed our style from the constantly playing out at the back to mixing it up. our results in general got better from that day on. I think it was a wake up call for the team.
The Cat Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 [Pedant alert] The correct answer is the MOMENT when Fonte's header crossed the line at Brighton, or the MOMENT our 3rd goal went in against MK Dons. Or the MOMENT the final whistle went at either of those games How a whole game can be a moment is beyond me. [/pedant alert]
ulstersaint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 MKD 3-2. Never doubted from that moment. What he said. I was at the game and couldn't see a way back from 0-2 down -then Nigel made a sub and Forte scored 2 quick goals. 3-2 from 0-2 and the record since WWWLWWWWW.
SNSUN Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Huddersfield's last defeat, to us, which seems to have sealed their fate. Or our win, to Huddersfield, that coincided with our best performances of the season. Whichever way you want to look at it.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 There's gonna be times where people tell you that you can't live your dreams. This is what I tell them: Never say never. Justin B!!
Tamesaint Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 The second half of Nigel's first "proper" match in charge against Colchester. The previous wednesday we had played at MK Dons. We were poor that night and just capitulated in the last 20 minutes. The team had no pace, no fluidity and little heart. Most of that team went on to play big parts in our success but you would have got big odds on them ending in second place after that game. Relegation rather than promotion was more likely after that evening. The first half of the Colchester game offered nothing better. We were poor and had not improved from the previous game. But after halftime we came out looking a different team. I think that there were a couple of substitutions (Dickson from memory had a great second half) but the improvement was amazing. The next game was against Sheff Wed, we won and the bus was well and truly on the road.

Saint_Mabes Posted 3 May, 2011 Posted 3 May, 2011 Bournemouth. Huge 6 pointer at the time and set the wheels in motion.
Miffy Posted 4 May, 2011 Posted 4 May, 2011 3-2 MK Dons for me. This was really helped by the positive support from the fans at 2-0 down, which has been a new feature this season. In the past I feel the SMS crowd have tended to get on the players backs quite quickly if things aren't going well. This season has been completely different and it seems to have a great effect on the players. Lets hope this continues into next season.
jamesb Posted 4 May, 2011 Posted 4 May, 2011 mk dons. as said before fans reaction at 2-0 down is the best I have ever heard. For first time I have know the team AND the fans believed we could still win
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 4 May, 2011 Posted 4 May, 2011 [Pedant alert] The correct answer is the MOMENT when Fonte's header crossed the line at Brighton, or the MOMENT our 3rd goal went in against MK Dons. A point in time that you remember the season by. For me it's FONTE SHIRTLESS IN FRONT OF THE SAINTS FANS AFTER HIS WINNER AT BRIGHTON. Do I win a coconut?
SuperSAINT Posted 4 May, 2011 Posted 4 May, 2011 There were many of them. Most of them listed above. But for me, it's the MK Dons game above all others. It was a HUGE 3pts.
