Fulham agree fee with Roma for John Arne Riise according to Sky.

Blimey, talk about a long term target! They were after him back before Liverpool signed him! A perfect example of never giving up on your goals.

jordansibley: Long old day in the office today, but it's all worth it when things finally come together.

Make of that what you will...[/QUOTE]

He's had a hard day at work, probably spending most of his time making up spurious quotes by the players about the new yet to be revealed kit. Or things that they might have said had they actually seen it,or asked about it.

Mellor would not be bad providing it was backup for Rickie. I cannot see Maynard wanting to sit on the bench for most of the time.

Would he be on a free transfer? If so, it's a fairly low risk signing, but I would like to see someone with pace brought in, unless Adkins is confident Forte has a future with us.

I would not disagree about pace, but a "big hulk" does not have this normally.

Mellor scored 20 goals last season for Wednesday last season despite not playing that often and them being sh*te. If he is free then I reckon its a good addition.

43 games is quite often isn't it?

20 goals in 43 games is still a very good record, but I think Saints could do much better. Jack Cork is an indication of the standard of player Adkins wants to bring in. There is quite a gap between making bids for Billy Sharp of £3.25m and then bidding for Neil Mellor, thus I don't think it is true.

I didn't think it was as many as 43 but the websites I've checked have differing information. But even if you are right, a striker who scores roughly one in two on a free wouldn't be bad. I don't disagree that we could do better but if he is free then why not? If Rickie were to get injured tomorrow and be out for a while then we could do a lot worse.

Because as you said, we could do a lot better. Pointless signing another striker early in the window for the sake of it. Buy one because he is an improvement on what we have, hence the interest in players of the calibre of Billy Sharp, who is proven at Championship level.

I thought this too at first and taking what has been said literally, were only looking to sign better than we currently have. However, thinking about it again, maybe we are looking to cover RL (because that is Mellor's position, the out and out centre forward) and save him from having to play nearly 50 games again next season.

If Billy Sharp had signed, Saints wouldn't be putting a £3.25m striker as "cover". He'd be starting pretty much every game.

As Sharp didn't sign, I think it is reasonable to assume the club is looking for other strikers at a similar or greater value who would also go straight into the starting XI.

No, but Sharp is different player and would have been playing alongside Lambert. We are not going to get a player better than Lambert for his position IMO because then we're talking an established Premier League player, who first has to agree to drop down a division and secondly we're going to have to break the bank for, both in fee and wages.

Unlikely to bring in two strikers, with Barnard, Lambert, Connolly and Do Prado already at the club that would make six and top heavy. So it wouldn't be Mellor (as Lambert cover) and a player to play with Lambert, it will just be an expensive strike partner similar(ish) to Sharp.

any pardew rejects?

several players have been told they are surplus to requirements on Tyneside and can leave the club, including Leon Best, Nile Ranger, Alan Smith and Kazenga LuaLua.

The Chronicle understands that Wayne Routledge was also told to forget about a long-term future with Newcastle yesterday.

Smith is contracted to 2012, while Best and Routledge have two years left on their contracts and Ranger’s deal runs to 2016.

Leon Best was Brum's top target before McLeish left. With Hughton going there I'd of thought he'd be right on their radar again (unless of course Houghton didn't like him). The same could apply to all those players I guess. I'm surprised Routledge hasn't signed for QPR, but they appear to be not releasing funds to Warnock.

They will be on big wages for example Alan Smith will return to Leeds if Newcastle pay half of his wages.

not sure if this is the right thread to put this message now the transfer rumour thread is dead.

our Swansea colleague has popped into the office 'alright mucker'...

He reckons Gary Monk absolutely loves it at Swansea, and has been in all four divisions with them or something. He reckons, bar a couple of injuries over the last couple of years, hes a quality player.

He said he is instrumental, and Swansea have been in the top two for clean sheets for the last two seasons.

So, would be good to bring him back based on those reports!

Unfortunately the entire link was made up by a WUM with nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon. Would have liked him here
