Cabrone Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 CMS, Danns and a CB and I'd be a very happy chappy. Me too. If we could squeeze in George Boyd I'd be an even happier chappy .
Chez Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 rumour is that Lee Cook is to be released by QPR. Lets get him down here and check his fitness out.
Saint Charlie Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Lee Cook meet Lee Holmes. Lee Cook is injury prone and overrated. Lee Holmes is also injury prone and overated. Not sure why we would get Cook when we already have Holmes? IMO we should be looking to offload Holmes and bring in someone fresh who has hunger and fitness!
Saint_clark Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 - Watford are apparently the club he and his family support. - Norwich in the Premier League. I would question why he would choose Watford over Saints for football reasons, but not Norwich in the top flight. He said if he chooses Watford over Norwich or Saints, he didn't say chooses Watford or Norwich over Saints

I can't argue with you about the injury record, but Holmes couldn't lace Cook's boots. The guy was different class for QPR which is why he got his Premiership move to Fulham. IMO opinion Holmes isn't even good enough for the Championship never mind the Prem. Get him down to SMS and get him fully tested and into preseason. What have you got to lose?
Turkish Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Anything to back that up? He signed for us last January according to Sky Sports.
captainchris Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Don't get why people want to sign Bridge. He has been poor for ages and we have 3 very good LBs on the books, not to mention Shaw, who seems to be getting rave reviews. Signing him would just be adding another very large chunk the the wage bill. This is correct 100%. We seem to have a lot of fans on here who are stuck in the past. Bridge has changed - watch him on the telly he really is quite a way off the pace these days and his marking has been pretty poor too......An old horse ready to be put out to stud..

Bridge has changed - watch him on the telly he really is quite a way off the pace these days and his marking has been pretty poor too......An old horse ready to be put out to stud.. you do realise he's having to defend against some of the best players around, not just bog standard Championship right midfielders?
Crab Lungs Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 you do realise he's having to defend against some of the best players around, not just bog standard Championship right midfielders? He'd still struggle. Exactly the same principle - if you're not very good, you're not very good. Wayne Bridge isn't very good any more. He doesn't get forward any more. His positioning is terrible. He's slow and looks constantly nervous. World class midfielder or lower Premier League one, he pretty much comes off second best every time. Why is this conversation still being had, anyway? We've got 3 first team left-backs, 2 promising youth left backs... why we'd want an expensive, over-the-hill one to add to our collection is a f()cking mystery. I'm getting sick of saying the same thing on about 4-5 different threads! Anyway, if you don't want to take my word for it, ask the fans of Chelsea, Fulham, West Ham and Man City and I'm sure they'd oblige...
NickG Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 exactly. Will we want a 31 year old LB next season, who for last 10 years has played 10 games a season?
NickG Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Murray signs for Palace http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/Sport.cfm?id=18574&headline=Brighton
Rebel Posted 21 May, 2011 Posted 21 May, 2011 Looks like Palace are hoping to be contenders this coming season - I had them down as also rand or relegation fodder!
Jimmy_D Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Ouch. That's pretty much like it'd be for us if Lambert decided to leave on a free for Pompey...

The gap in wages between prem and NPC has never been higher so the only contracted Prem players you are going to get are nippers. Personally I'm more than happy with the three leftbacks we have.
Chez Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Murray signs for Palace http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/Sport.cfm?id=18574&headline=Brighton wonder if we were really interested? We'll probably never know.
Saint_John Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Sorry if this is too long for some to read but at the start of last season the Football League introduced new rules relating to the size of 1st team squads. http://www.football-league.co.uk/footballleaguenews/20100608/football-league-agm-report_2293334_2070706Clubs have voted in favour of new rules restricting clubs' first team squads to 25 players over the age of 21, of which ten must be 'home grown' (registered in domestic football for three seasons before their 21st birthday). There will be no restriction on players under the age of 21. When they changed the rulebook the wording was different, because it refers to "Under 21". http://www.football-league.co.uk/regulations/20100801/section-6-players_2293633_2125731 39. SQUAD SIZES 39.1 A Player shall not be eligible to participate in a League Match played between the close of the first Transfer Window and the end of the Season unless: 39.1.1 his name is included in the Squad List; 39.1.2 he is an Under 21 Player; The definition of "Under 21" and "Squad List" are :- http://www.football-league.co.uk/regulations/20100801/section-1-general_2293633_2125698 Squad List - means the list of up to a maximum of 25 Players eligible to participate in League Matches during a Season of whom a maximum of 15 may not be Home Grown Players. Under 21 Player - means a Player under the age of 21 as at the 1st January in the year in which the Season concerned commences (e.g. for Season 2010/11, born on or after 1st January 1989). So for the coming season (2011/12) the "Under 21" definition is :- born on of after 1 Jan 1990. Now Saints will have 3 players on their books that will move from the "Under 21" category to the 25 man Squad List, namely Morgan Schneiderlin (08/11/1989), Joseph Mills (30/10/1989) and Aaron Martin (29/09/1989). This means that as things currently stand today Saints already have have 23 players of the maximum 25 :- (1) Barnard, (2) Bialkowski, (3) Butterfield, (4) Chaplow (5) Connolly, (6) Davis, (7) Dickson, (8 Do Prado, (9) Fonte, (10) Forte, (11) Forecast, (12) Harding, (13) Hammond, (14) Holmes, (15) Jaidi, (16) Lallana, (17) Lambert, (18 Martin, (19) Mills, (20) Puncheon, (21) Richardson, (22) Schneiderlin, (23) Seaborne. - (assuming (5) is offered/agrees a new contract). O-Chamberlain and Gobern are counted as "Under 21" and are therefore in addition to the 25 man Squad. Saints currently have room for 2 more players in their 25 man "Squad List". Imo it is almost certain that (20) and more than likely (19) will be sold/loaned, which will take it up to 4. However if the Club goes up to that 25 limit the buying Club will know we need to sell and the price for those players will go down. Equally trying to loan them out will put us in a disadvantage re wages etc, so it a balancing act. p.s. If we buy Stephens (Oldham) - DOB-12/12/1989 he will be counted in the 25 man Squad Therefore imo it is important to keep Alex and Oscar because it allows us to have a 27 man Squad for next season. I hope this puts an end to those would sell Alex and buy 5 experience nPC players, because we would still need to sell/loan others. Full Rules on Squad List http://www.football-league.co.uk/regulations/20100801/section-6-players_2293633_2125731 39. SQUAD SIZES 39.1 A Player shall not be eligible to participate in a League Match played between the close of the first Transfer Window and the end of the Season unless: 39.1.1 his name is included in the Squad List; 39.1.2 he is an Under 21 Player; 39.1.3 he is registered in accordance with either Regulation (Emergency Loans or Youth Loan) or Regulation (Emergency Loan of Goalkeepers); or 39.1.4 he is a goalkeeper who is recalled from Standard, Emergency or Youth Loan in circumstances where all the other professional goalkeepers at the Club are deemed, by the Executive in its absolute discretion, to be unavailable to play in any match. 39.2 Club shall apply to: 39.2.1 include a Player on its Squad List; and 39.2.2 remove a Player from its Squad List, by submitting the same to the Executive in the form(s) prescribed by the Executive from time to time. 39.3 A Player shall be deemed to have been included or removed from a Club's Squad List on receipt of written confirmation to that effect from the Executive. 39.4 Changes to a Squad List may be made: 39.4.1 during a Transfer Window; 39.4.2 at other times only by the addition of an Unemployed Player.
Chez Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 very interesting. Can't see Stephens coming here. His agent wouldn't have been touting him in the papers if it was a done deal.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 very interesting. Can't see Stephens coming here. His agent wouldn't have been touting him in the papers if it was a done deal. I'm certain Howard was the player we wanted and we went for Stephens when that fell through. Now, I think we're waiting to see what Howard's situation will be again next week, re: promotion or not, and then we'll make a move for Stephens if Howard declares himself unavailable.
Tom28 Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 United have said they are releasing Hargreaves this summer. Yes its completely ridiculous, but that signing would be amazing wouldn't it?! I know he's injury prone, but he's an awesome player and would slot in perfectly into the centre of our midfield. Here's hoping a miracle can be pulled off...!

Saying he's injury prone is an understaement, he's perminatley injured and will probably retire. I really think we need to be looking past these ''big name'' injury prone players looking for one last payday. Talented young players that can grow with the club is the direction we should be looking in.
sfc4prem Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 So basically we could do with selling Puncheon and Mills and maybe Seaborne?
revolution saint Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 I expect a couple of Euro players coming in. I agree. The article about the European scout suggested as much and it makes sense - European players are cheaper and it's an easier sell to get them to come here. I think we'll get a "marquee", probably British, signing to show how ambitious we are but the rest will be from overseas.
Thedelldays Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 you do realise he's having to defend against some of the best players around, not just bog standard Championship right midfielders? just like olivier bernard

I think we'll get a "marquee", probably British, signing to show how ambitious we are but the rest will be from overseas. I'm not Xenphobic - but johnny foreigner don't do it for me. The era of the loyal Scandinavian has gone...it's all about African mercenaries or nationalised Europeans from the dark continent. I have been impressed with Guly - OK a Brazillian but has adjusted well to the demands of League 1. I remember old sulky boots (Fernandes) at Cardiff p*ssing around behind the goal at Cardiff when Strachan wanted him on - he totally ignored his frantic waving for him to get his kit off! Look at the Poles - Saganoffski! Contract then off with all the effort! I know we have mercenaries in this country too - look at our squad. If Forecast or Pulis had any honour they'd pay back all but £50,000 they have earned in the last 3-years to show their loyalty to SFC! No I don't think so!! Players coming in? Young lads who have potential and are hungry. I used to think Dyer was in that mould until the night club incident and he got too big for his boots (even though he's a squirt!). Nigel will know what we need, and they won't unbalance a ship already on course to go further up the leagues. Harmony and competition must be the key to a succesful season next year. Saying all that we need a clinical finisher. We missed the power of Kenwyn Jones and when he left he was really raw. I don't think he has progressed that far as in the Cup Final he missed a 1-on-1 at 0-0. Any striker worth his salt should have converted that one chance. At times in The Championship we may only get one chance - even Connolly isn't Mr. Perfect. It is going to be a long hot summer - but I want quality and passion. Someone who will become as much as part of the club as our home grown talent - fat chance I know but we can all have dreams.

supersonic Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Lewis McGugan from Forest would be good. A central midfielder who likes to go forward, has an eye for goal and still quite young? Although I heard Fulham and Bolton were interested in him so if one of them bids, he'll be off there
Chez Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Lewis McGugan from Forest would be good. A central midfielder who likes to go forward, has an eye for goal and still quite young? Although I heard Fulham and Bolton were interested in him so if one of them bids, he'll be off there putting to one side the numerous long range screamers earlier in the season, he's also a very decent footballer. Nice touch, plays with his head up and very confortable on the ball. Just can't see him leaving them for us. No harm in trying I suppose.
Red&White Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Beattie has become a waste of space wherever he has been and even Stoke who love our ex got rid of him, our new Saints club is looking ahead not back. Agree
SuperSAINT Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Hargreaves released. I know lots will gamble on him, but hope e try. Outside chance. Big money pay and play maybe, or risk a one year deal. On the off chance he finds fitness it's worth it. No chance, mate. For 100 different reasons.
petermcpete Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Wouldn't mind Lovenkrands for a couple of seasons, have always thought he is a bit underrated, got a fair bit of pace on him as well.
itchen_dan Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 What about Roger Johnson from Birmingham? Worth a go surely or unrealistic?
Pat from Poole Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 What about Roger Johnson from Birmingham? Worth a go surely or unrealistic? He is originally from near Bournemouth, I believe.
LGTL Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Johnson will almost certainly be snapped up by a PL team, he is a very decent defender.
Saint_clark Posted 22 May, 2011 Posted 22 May, 2011 Johnson will almost certainly be snapped up by a PL team, he is a very decent defender. This. Him and Scott Danns were one of the best pairings in the Prem, although the stats obviously don't support that.

Raging Bull Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 Bothroyd & Burke have just been released from Cardiff
S-Clarke Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 Bothroyd & Burke have just been released from Cardiff I'd expect Bothroyd to be picked up by a relegated team, or even a promoted championship team. Could prob do a job in the prem tbh Chris Burke isn't too bad a player, not sure how he's been recentley though.
saints-cris Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 Bothroyd & Burke have just been released from Cardiff Blimey.. will definately be a battle for Bothroyd. Who knows if he stays in the Championship though.
Raging Bull Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 Cardiff having a bit of a clear out by the looks of it, not so sure they'll do quite so well next season
labibs Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 I imagine that they weren't released, but rather refused their new contracts. Bothroyd will definitely go to a prem side (Sunderland need a forward?), Burke possibly. As for Hargreaves and R. Johnson, I know it's fun to speculate, but please can we have a little bit of sense. I am certain neither of these players will be joining us in the summer. Why would Hargreaves accept a pay as you play deal in the NPC? He will have offers from numerous Champion League clubs. Johnson is an established premier league defender, under the age of 30. Why would he come to the NPC when he would have a range of clubs in the Prem after him?

Saint Charlie Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 Wouldn't be suprised if the now free agent Mirfin signed for us.
pingwing Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 Bothroyd and Burke would be pretty much ideal signings, Bothroyd a different but good striker to compliment Lambert and Burke would be good rotation for the wings, just hope they haven't got stupid wage demands
Bailey Posted 23 May, 2011 Posted 23 May, 2011 This. Him and Scott Danns were one of the best pairings in the Prem, although the stats obviously don't support that. The stats do actually. Johnson and Danns formed a formidable partnership. It was when Danns suffered a long-term injury that Brum's season started to unravel.
