Championship Summer 2011 HCDAJFU

All talk of Owen being seen/already having agreed deals/going anywhere is ridiculous at the moment.

Don't you think he might have bigger things on his mind? Like a Champions League Final?

Mouriniho (sp?) agreed a move to Chelsea before winning the champions league with Porto. Now I'm not saying we're Chelsea - clearly we're better than that but it is an example of a football person being able to do more than one thing at the same time.

Personally if I were Owen then I'd want to agree this before the Champions League final anyway - it'll give Alex a good reason to play him from the start. Kind of like a farewell match if you will. In fact the more I think about this the more credible it sounds.

It's a superb statement of intent - well done to everyone at the club for pulling it off and well done to little Michael Owen for finally getting such a dream move.

Just been talking to a colleague up in the S****horpe area who tells me the rumours around S****horpe Utd are that Saints are interested in David Mirfin - centre back - 26yrs -6'1" tall, 14 and a half stone and pretty quick. His nickname is "the Ox". Sounds promising ..

What about getting Martin Cranie back? At Cov now, surely he'd be up for it, always thought he was decent. Talking of ex centre halfs Matt Mills would be quality signing but i cant see him leaving Reading even if they dont go up.

Watching Matt Mills tonight...he does look a class act, although he does play on the right as a CB like Fonte.

Absoloute class CB.

Took a while to get going for Reading but he could hold his own in the PL IMO. Such a shame he wasn't given the games here as he's now one of the best CBs in the champ.

I agree, think he'll be snapped up in the summer by a premier league side if Reading dont go up, Depressing that the two stand out players in the championship play offs have been Nathan Dyer and Matt Mills.

Not sure Dyer was stand out, lots of blind alleys for me, but you could chuck in another Saint in Gary Monk to that list of Saints. Mind you McGoaldrought still stands around like a 40 year old playmaker until he is subbed

Dyer was outstanding in the first game!! He wasn't as good last night but still played well. He is also Swanseas player of the season.

Agreed.

Letting him go was one of Harry's master-strokes.

That was because Wigley was coach at the time when Stuart Pearce was Manager.

If I remember correctly, he was out of contract, but there was an interview with him where he said he didn't sign a new one with us because our manager at the time [Harry] wouldn't pick him.

I remember it well, because we had 2 games against lower league opposition in the league cup where we played the kids. We won the 1st game and Harry said "well, in fairness, we should be beating them...". Then in the next round we played a similar team, lost and he had a right pop at them saying something like "people keep telling me that these kids can play, but if they can't beat a lower league team then they really aren't good enough". Basically it was a dig at Rupert, who must've been telling him to give the nippers a chance.

I'm not a fan of Harry but this was definately Burley's doing. Mills was shunted out to left back where he was clearly uncomfortable and I remember him giving Shipperley an easy winner for Sheff Utd in a XMAS fixture at SMS where was trying to get the ball back on his right foot. Burley also messed up with Blackstock, letting him go to QPR for too little. I hear Burley is on the shortlist for the Swindon job - bet the pubs of Swindon want him to get the job. Nathan Dyer has proabably done a bit a growing up at Swansea, further away from his pals in London.

I'm thinking that we're unlikely to see signings until play-offs and relegations are complete. We'll be in the same division as three teams which just came down from the PL. Anybody there we may fancy? There are also some clubs who are not promoted to the PL. They will have some players who may be interested.

I also noticed that both Papa Waigo and Guly had a past in Cesena. Our contact for those signings has got an inside track there. Do we know anything about Cesena players?

It does hurt watching former youth players at Saints doing well for other teams in the nPC as you can't help feeling they should still be with us!

Harry Redknapp has to take some of the blame for this for throwing the young players to the wolves in a cup game against lower league clubs and then dancing on their graves when they lost. He did his best to make sure they would lose by playing too many of them and playing them alongside the useless players who couldn't make the first team. He also played them out of position when he could as well. Bring them into a losing team was never going to help.

Redknapp has his own agenda and used the youth players to make a point and score points against Lowe.

Burley also has to take the blame for not playing them - or playing them out of position when he did.

But the real culprit was Rupert Lowe for wanting them played before they were ready and then only giving them year long contracts instead of long term contracts that tied them to the club and gave them time to develop. Quite a few of them left Saints when there contracts ran out or we were forced to sell as they only had a year left.

Right now a Saints team including Martin Cranie at righback, Matt Mills and Gary Monk at centreback, Nathan Dyer at right midfield/forward, Andrew Surman at left/centre midfield, Simon Gillett as holding midfielder, Adam Lallana as attacking midfielder, Dexter Blackstock up front with Leon Best and David McGoldrick and Lloyd James on the bench doesn't look too bad does it!

Although you can see why they let Nile Ranger move on.

Darren Ambrose, to lead from midfield

Peter Whittingham, would be a fantastic asset

Kris Boyd, just waiting to 'go off on one' in England

James McFadden, great player

Zoltan Gera, abject talent - lead Fulham to Europa Cup final and that **** Hughes won't play him??

Stuart Taylor, nice 'keeper

Michael Tonge, transition into Jaidi's spot

Chris Kirkland, quality

Oguchi Onyewu, another terrific player/great Jaidi replacement

and maybe worth a punt David Goodwillie, good in Scotland???

They've got Stephen Appiah.....now that would be a statement of intent!

It's Tonge a central midfielder? I doubt we will sign a new keeper, possibly a youngster with potential, but can't see a big name keeper coming here with Kelv on the books. Onyewu is unrealistic (He could get a CL club somewhere IMO) and I think Gera would get offers from Premier league clubs (QPR?) but the others are reasonable shouts. Not sure I would want McFadden, great on his day but maddeningly inconsistent and been out for a long time with injury. Would want massive wages as well.

Funny you mention Stephen Appiah....i listed him the other week as a player who was available on a free and is an excellent player. Cortese may be the kind of guy to pull off a deal like that.

My ideal window would be this

Appiah

Danns or Cork

Matt Phillips if Chamberlain is sold

Wayne Bridge

Nathanial Clyne

CMS

Ashley Williams (if Swans don't go up)

Bolasie

Now that would be quite something

I think we could go for the following:

Michael Brown (Pompey) Free

Derek Riordan

Michail-Smith

George Boyd

Michail Antonio

Plus a decent experienced Centre back.

Chamberlain sold to finance this

Why do you think Chamberlain needs to be sold to finance it? Adkins, Cortese and Friis-Hansen have all indicated there is money available to buy players.

you look at it in reality - a nipper who cant last 90 minutes .............someone offering us a shedload of money for someone unproven, is not rocket science.

His agents will be trying to get him moved on so why spend out when we may not need to, or other than that i take it you'd agree with the names mentioned then??

Don't get why people want to sign Bridge. He has been poor for ages and we have 3 very good LBs on the books, not to mention Shaw, who seems to be getting rave reviews. Signing him would just be adding another very large chunk the the wage bill.

You're kidding right? Nothing wrong with Tonge but playing him in defence?

Ok, if money wasn't an issue you could have any 4 players who have been mentioned on this thread, who would they be? Assume that we don't sell any of our current assets.

I'd say CMS, Pilkington, Ambrose and either Greg Halford or Wes Morgan.

Cork

Mancienne

Pilkington

CMS

Personally I think Cork would be a great addition and also, although expensive, a realistic target.

I would love to see him here, he wants out at Chelsea to get first team football. Personally i think he's a realistic target to having been playing in the championship for the last few seasons
