sambosa75 Posted 13 May, 2011 Share Posted 13 May, 2011 Yep anyone mentioning Owen and Scholes needs their head checked....silly/stupid Now on to realistic players ins Nigel Reo-Coker Johan Elmander Henrique Hilario Patrick Vieira Owen Hargreaves & the best bit..................they are all out of contract so FREE! Reo-Coker would be a good signing but has a bit of an attitude on him. The sort of central midfielder that would do well in the Championship though. Viera is also a good shout but I reckon he'll have too much pride to drop to Championship level. If I was a World Cup winner with no ties to Southampton I wouldnt want to. I'm a better keeper than Hilario-us, so no, not a good shout Hargreaves is finished. Elmander wanted by some quite big Italian clubs but I've heard he's more or less nailed on to join Newcastle. Firstly Sharp was never given a consistent run in the team at Sheffield United which always makes it difficult for a striker to score goals i'm sure you can understand. In 2007, when he was at S****horpe banging in the goals, have you asked yourself who was manager then in arguably the richest vein of form in his career...? Lastly you mention a poor goalscoring record but despite being out injured for much of this campaign he has scored 15 goals in 28 games in a team which just escaped relegation so maybe those are a few reasons why he's getting a mention. When he was banging goals in for S****horpe in 2006/07 he was playing league one football. Take away that record and his goal scoring record in the championship really isn't that special. You have to ask why wasn't he getting a run in Sheffield Uniteds side and has only done anything at small clubs. THink you need to check your facts before calling others ignorant. Lighthouse Posted 15 May, 2011 Author Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Genuine question, is he better than Barnard? Genuine answer, no idea. Been doing it at a lower level for a few seasons, so could be another Lambert or another Ormerod. Young enough, eager to prove, should fit sensibly enough into the wage bill, doesn't come with a history of injuries. If it all goes tits up, he should still have a reasonable sell on price. saintfully Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 If we want to get promoted league 2 is not the place to be looking imo ! Kind of agree - although I think that there have been a few examples recently of players bought from lower leagues who, given time, have proven surprisingly successful in higher divisions. I wasn't sure about Simeon Jackson in the Championship, or DJ Campbell (!) and Jermains Beckford in the Prem. All have surprised and done a job. Question is, would our fans give a striker not proven at Championship level time? Hmmm.
SuperMikey Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Le Fondre would be a good signing, provided he doesn't cost too much. His goalscoring record is very good, even if it is at a lower level. He's still young and he's a natural finisher with pace - something every team needs. Even if he wouldn't start every week, he'd still be an excellent squad player for any Championship side. Lighthouse Posted 15 May, 2011 Author Share Posted 15 May, 2011 If we want to get promoted league 2 is not the place to be looking imo ! Well, I believe Arsenal have been looking at a certain League 1 winger for the last few months. PNE signed Nugent from none-League Bury and he ended up in the England team. Sure there are dozens of other examples. Being good in League 2 doesn't necessarily mean you can't cut it at a higher level.

My Bury season ticket holder friend would string me up if I didn't pick you up on the fact Bury haven't ever been non league. They were in League 2 when Nugent signed for Preston - so exactly the same jump as Fondre would make.

Lighthouse Posted 15 May, 2011 Author Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Anyone who thinks we're going to be stealing players off the Championships top teams is probably going to be disappointed. The likes of Long, Graham etc are likely to come with a £3m price tag and a hefty wage packet even if they did want to come here. Premier league rejects even more so. There may be a couple, but I'd have thought a few of the brighter prospects from the lower leagues would be more our target.

benjii Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Reckon Gudjohnsen might be worth a 1 year deal? Contract at Stoke expires this summer. No doubt he would still be good but I imagine he is on uber bucks and if we sign a forward it should be a dynamic, pacy forward. We have enough good creative players already. I would rather have Owen, Ba, Anelka or Drogba TBH.
Lighthouse Posted 15 May, 2011 Author Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Was this the case when we built a team in league 1? We bought lambert - league 1's top scorer. Hammond - Colchester's captain, Dickson - league 1's leftback of the year, Fonte, Forte, Harding, Butterfield & Chaplow from the league above etc The best strategy is to sign the best players from our direct competition. Which will turn out to be massively expensive in terms of transfer fees and wages. We'd be going back to the Burley days of signing big names on big wages again and, but for an injection from the Liebherrs, going back into administration. It worked in League 1 because our attendances were massively disproportionate most of the other teams and we desperately needed to get out. Even so, we only spent £3m ish and still made a small loss. Doing that in the NpC could cost us £10m in transfers and something similar in wages.

I think the key will be finding a good blend. There is no saying experienced players couldn't DAJFU, just like Jaidi and Perry but the last thing we want is to end up like Cardiff did a few years ago with Hasselbaink and Fowler. I was at St Marys when we played them that season and I don't think I've ever seen 2 footballers look less interested in a game of football. If we signed Cork, Nugent and Antonio I'd probably jizz in my pants. Edited 15 May, 2011 by Lighthouse
