CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Great result today and you can sense we're almost there now. I'd like to take a moment from our own promotion push to congratulate Huddersfield on the magnificent bloody effort they too are putting in - whichever one of us gets the last automatic place will totally deserve it.

I'd like to take a moment from our own promotion push to congratulate Huddersfield on the magnificent bloody effort they too are putting in - whichever one of us gets the last automatic place will totally deserve it. I agree with the sentiment, but honestly.......Save that stuff till it's over! PLEASE!!!
SimonC Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Eric - 600 up there is ok for us - not being a massive club like you - you didn't even mention free coaches either? We would have taken more if it was more vital - we had 1.5k at Carlisle a couple of years ago. I know full well Saints have been known to take 2-300 to Man City before? Well anyway, well done you lot for getting auto, enjoy it as I know they don't come up that often if you are in the same divvy for a long time - although really it was minimum requirements for this season I suppose - good end of season run! Looks like we will have Udders in the play offs, so I hope they are suitably deflated. We did our usual today - 2-0 lead thrown away for the 2nd week running...this time the goalie equalises (you couldn't make it up)...27 points thrown away in the last ten mins of the season...and counting...

You got the facts wrong about us. We are not up yet. Anyways........Your lot have secured a play off place. Good luck in that! I hope to see us both in a better division next season!
captainchris Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Both you and Solent are correct. Yes of course we will be up but the little 'p' will not appear against our name until it is a 100% mathematical certainty. The guy on Solent was being pedantic-end off. I wouldn't mind but he just kept on and on and on. If we beat Plymouth we are up. Who gives a flying pig about a little 'p' on the league table. Are Hudds going to score about 16 or 17 goals in their last game - NO, so stop being a clever **** - what ever your name is and concede that we are up IF we win ! So immature and nausiating!
SimonC Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Yep - well altough we have chucked loads of points away, its a great achievement for us. You'll do it though - we all know it will happen!! Yes next year would be nice - we might have some more civilised matches now the novelty has worn off!!
CLOTH EARS Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 I wasn't expecting any other result from the Brighton v Huddersfield game than the one we got, so i am not disappointed i am delighted that we got the win that we needed. Plymouth need a win on monday so they have to attack and this should play right into our hands.

Windmill Arm 2 Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Excellent result and day out. Bless their little stadium and poor support. Was a little miffed that none of the players in the dug out looked happy when the final whistle blew. Maybe theyve been told to reign it in until monday.Should they have been punching the air and carrying Lallana around the pitch on their shoulders ? or perhaps they could have all lined up for a winners photograph, bouncing up and down on their knees, afterall they were promoted today weren't they........................oh
Saint Garrett Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Nice to see some of the players sitting in the crowd today...Chamberlain, Barnard, Doble, Forecast and Holmes in the seated areas of the stand!
corsacar saint Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Great win today, and second place is totally in our own hands,we cannot ask anymore than that. Also the fact Plymouth have to attack us on monday will hopefully play into our hands.
SNSUN Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 I wasn't expecting any other result from the Brighton v Huddersfield game than the one we got. I agree Brighton had nothing to play for (except the 100 points aim which their fans seem to have gone quiet about), aside from it being the last game at the Withdean, and I expected Huddersfield to fight to keep up with us, but at 2-2 I genuinely thought Brighton could do it, and then we'd have been as good as up today. Even a draw wouldve been good, meaning a draw against Plymouth or Walsall is all we would have needed. Hey ho, one win from two games - if Saints can't do that, we don't deserve to go up automatically. But we will. IMO of course.
Wes Tender Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 It was almost inevitable that Huddersfield would beat Brighton and match us point for point. But with a game in hand and a vastly superior goal difference, it is they who must feel mightily down at the mouth at the way that we are performing. They are giving it their all and it is not enough to make a dent in our advantage. We have the confidence boost, the impetus and the knowledge that it is still firmly in our hands. They must be getting an increasing sinking feeling over the past couple of weeks, that even if they were to win their last match, we only have to win one of two, because of our massive goal difference advantage and there is nothing they can do about it. We were the first team to beat Brighton at home this season and they had to follow that to match our points today, but the goal difference advantage increased by a further two. Huddersfield will have watched us suffer injuries to key players and hoped that as a result we would falter. But just as Barnard went out for the rest of the season, Connolly came back in and what a player he is when we need him most. Arguably, he is more of a goal threat than Barnard, with a footballing brain that makes him the shrewder player of the two. It is to be hoped that Guly is not too badly injured, because he has been playing well, but Gobern will have received a confidence boost today in filling his boots. OK, so two games again in quick succession, but we did pretty well the last time and perhaps with the impetus we have, it is no bad thing. Especially as we know that a win on Monday will see us promoted, unless there is a record breaking win for Huddersfield and a record breaking defeat for us. There is pressure on us to win it on Monday, but if we do so, we can relax next Saturday, which might produce a free-scoring win when nothing is at stake apart from finishing the season with a win. As for Brighton, another poke in the eye for Poyet. Yes, your finishing position makes you the best team in the division over the course of the season. But you have not beaten either of the two teams immediately below you, who have now both become the only two teams to have beaten you at home. And if I'm not mistaken, since Adkins arrived, his points total beats yours over the same period. So, although it would have been nice to have been three points ahead of Huddersfield tonight, most Saints fans will shrug their shoulders and think, right, let's do it on Monday. Most Huddersfield fans can do nothing but hope that we lose on Monday and then better our points next week. That's a long time to be biting your nails.
Appy Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Very accomplished performance, completely blew Brentford away in the 1st 45. Shame about Huddersfield's late winner, fair play to them they have been awesome these last few weeks. Whoever spread the rumour in the terrace about Brighton going 3-2 up is a tool to say the least. Bring on Plymouth on Monday!
Leicestersaint Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 A great result as i was a little bit doubtful about winning at Brentford - now just a nice little win on Monday will do nicely and then Saturday can be a great big celebration.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Both you and Solent are correct. Yes of course we will be up but the little 'p' will not appear against our name until it is a 100% mathematical certainty. I dont give a F**K about any little p! A win on Monday and as far as I am concerned it is job done making Saturday a no nerves celebration!

Having just looked on the hudders forum most of them still seem to think were going to blow it in the last two matches and all the pressure is on us.

The only one who had a smile on their face today was Connolly. Just an observation. Dont think it was helped by the confusion over who scored the third in the hudds Brighton game as everyone around us were celebrating thinking it was brighton and the players looked confused as think they knew the actual result. Saw all the players after the game sitting by the back doors waiting to leave and again they all just looked a bit down. Doubt there was anything in it mind.

I agree with them....this is Saints....we don't do easy. My biggest worry is Bompey in the play offs having beaten them 3 times already cant see us doing that 5 times in a season. I will be at Plymouth on Monday hopefully watching us making the last day irrelevant. Edited 30 April, 2011 by Give it to Ron
Lord Duckhunter Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 If we cant beat one of Plymouth away or Walsall at home, we dont deserve to go up.
SuperMikey Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Just back from the game - great win for us today. We looked very comfortable, although we were very direct at times today (but that was probably to match Brentford's gameplan). Special mentions for Lallana (took his goal very well), Hammond (worked extremely hard), Connolly (also worked very hard) and Fonte (incredibly composed). Chaplow also did well but his tackling was a bit reckless at times. Onwards and upwards Saints!
Liquidshokk Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 If we cant beat one of Plymouth away or Walsall at home, we dont deserve to go up. Well said and absolutely true. Of course none of us will just accept that if we don't go up.

wokingsaints Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 game of two halfs as already stated, 1st half we could have taken on barcelona, 2nd half......basingstoke more like what annoyed me was the 3-4000 empty seats in the ground. My view from from the home terrace highlighted the killing Brentford could have made should they given saints more tickets, and given the opportunity to another few thousand noisy saints fans. only noticed a couple of fellow saints in the home terrace/seating areas, a real shame.COYR
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 If we cant beat one of Plymouth away or Walsall at home, we dont deserve to go up.Agree totally, literally EVERY team in this division would want our best 11 to be wearing their colours, if we dont achieve 2nd we've fooked up royally and deserve to stay down.

SuperMikey Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Also, what was with the dozens of Met officers lining the stand before the final whistle? One bloke jumps over the hoarding when we score our third and all of a sudden half of the f*cking front-line police officers in Britain are stood there waiting for us to surge forward like it's the battle scene in Braveheart or something! What a waste of money.

I have more confidence in this set of players achieving this target than at any point in my time following Saints. Adkins has got them set up just right IMO. Mentally, we are right on the money.

And...now that Brighton have rolled over and let 'udders through in injury time in the hope of sh*tting on us maybe they can finally put their paranoia about '78 to bed. 1-1...but it still didn't work...

EastleighSoulBoy Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 As they players walked off I thought they had a look of steely determination. They won't bottle it. NA will see to that. They'll debrief, draw a blue line, have medical checks and then prepare for Monday. It's strange, after all these years, to be involved in a promotion push as a fan. All those years of trials and tribulations while watching the fans of other teams enjoying their own promotion runs. It's still inbred to not be able to quite take it in, yet the facts are there. The team have done incredibly well despite our slips and trips but come Monday evening the dream may well have come true. C'mon Saints, twice more into the breech!

dubai_phil Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Surprised nobody has started a post match response with a big Outstanding Job to NA and his team. Us fans were falling over ourselves with nerves & self doubts, we had tons of threads about it, and yet the team went out onto that pitch today and created a chance in the first few seconds and never looked back. As VFTT mentions our players had a steely glare about them. Compare that post with the posts about that awful day at Nottarf Krap back in the days... The whole Saints Machine today deserves a HUGE vote of RESPECT from all of us unable to make it. the Management for getting the players in that frame of mind. The players for executing the plans. KD for teh Pen save, DC for again showing us what it means to have a brain in life as well as football and also of course to the fans who went up there and made so much quality noise. I raise my hat to all of them and while the "Old Saints fan" in me says - be tense we could still screw this up, I am strangely calm and confident tonight that finally we have a REAL team of Management Players and Fans who can make this happen great job to all of you today

dubai_phil Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 And of course the REALLY good news is that Playmuff have to beat us so they cannot simply park the bus and hope for a draw. That will do nicely, although Reidy is a crafty old sod and may still try that with the break out play.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 30 April, 2011 Posted 30 April, 2011 Nigel Adkins clearly likes a cliche in front of the camera but whatever he says to the players on a daily basis they are responding to very well. I suspect he is very much an 'arm around the shoulder' Manager who attempts to instil confidence in his players. They certainly haven't been paralysed with fear at all the past few weeks despite the situation were in being new to the club and many (if not all) of the players.
