Going Republican

Couldn't have put it better myself Badger. What we witnessed today was a f***ing grotesque insult to the 'age of austerity' we are living in. If the amount of public money spent on security etc.. for today could have been used to save one public sector job or prevented a single Sure Start childrens centre from closing then the public who support it should be ashamed of themselves. .

According to some estimates......

5 million pounds ($7.5M): Estimated cost of royal wedding security to taxpayers.

1.4 billion pounds ($2.2B): Estimated tourist revenue the royal wedding will generate.

I'm sure the taxes generated on that £1.4bn will outweigh the security costs. Perhaps the Royal Wedding might just help provide funds to save a few public sector jobs etc and it is the people who do not support it who should be ashamed of themselves.

I find it very strange that we invade Iraq and Bomb Libya, in the name of Democracy and yet our version of it, has a family ruling us on the basis of their forefathers being Saddam Hussein like, hundreds of years ago. Perhaps we should have let Saddam become King of Iraq and then in a few hundred years, his loyal subjects will be cheering and fawning over his relatives.

I love England but can not believe in 2011 that we still let ourselves be subjects and are considered commoners. I dont hate the Royals, but I hate all they stand for and the sooner we become a Republic and every one is born equal, the better.

Courtesy of Mrs B:

q) Why were there trees in the Abbey ?

a) Because Prince Charles was told he could invite 20 of his best mates to the wedding.

GEORGE III talked to trees you know, even had one cut down and brought to the breakfast table so that he could finish his conversation with it;

Then what possible connection do you have to these people that you emote so much about?

Leave it out. Me and Sergei love our Royal Family. Just like we loved Princess Diana (our Queen of Hearts), Jade Goody (our Queen of Hearts) and Susan Boyle (our Queen of Hearts).

And not doing a very good job of it too boot.

How do you manage to cycle 65miles? I do a few and my nether regions are chaffing!

It's called being a 'MAMIL', ( middle aged man in lycra ). Padded ( in the appropriate place ) leggings do a wonderful job.

Only because the Royalists are out enjoying themselves and it is aone sided debate!

"One sided debate"? Aren't we on the other side though? You're not helping us out here, Sergei. I'm trying to make us look clever here but you are really letting us down.

God save the Queen (our Queen of Hearts).

That comment could be used at 90% of football fans. I don't know Jose Fonte from adam, but i wanted to **** him after the winner at Brighton last saturday.

Admit it delldays, you shed a tear when you saw the wedding dress.

I dont see the problem in today..I am not religious yet celebrate xmas..I am not irish yet have a good pish up on st paddies day..I dont even know rickie lambert and never will yet desperately applaud him for kicking a bit of leather around a pitch and getting paid stupidly for it

I think it is patently clear that the republicans were similarly 'out enjoying themselves', they just found something better to do than sit slobbing in front of the TV gawking at the 'OK' event of the decade. And if it is a debate, it is by definition 2 sided.

Don't be daft. It's clearly a one-sided debate. There's only one side in this debate. I can't remember which one, but there's definitely only one. Which one is it again, Sergei? Is it us or them?

The X Factor comparison is a good one. Just because something is popular doesnt make it a good thing. Its just another happy clappy event for the gullible "great British public". The country has never been the same since drug-addled stay away single bint Diana died in that drunk driver crash on her shopping trip in Paris.

what a great fan you are....

Leave it mate, he answered the question that we weren't expecting him to. We were hoping he wasn't going to the game. Now we're just looking silly with that response. We'll have to think of another way to take him down in this Republican vs. Royalists debate.

As a newly promoted 'forum superstar ', who is part of the Liberal Elite, I'd like to side with the monarchists. IMO, the royals are a quaint sideshow, who massively bolster our economy. Their power, while enshrined in law, is in reality reliant on public opinion (one stupid poltical intervention, and the Republicans would fall upon them). Sure, there are downsides - like the bad example they present to kids of inherited rather than earnt wealth, but I feel while they remain politically impotent, they are more of a benefit than a disadvantage.

Now you've really confused them.

Being British I wouldn't say the British royal family are "completely unrelated" to me. The clue is the word British.

Are you predominantly German ? Or at least of direct descent from Sophia Electress of Hannover, ( which is a precondition for being in the line of succession ) ? Or perhaps you are descended from cousins married to cousins, going back many generations ?

I have a problem with the argument that if we were to get rid of them, we'd lose all that income from tourism. IMO, they'd still come in their droves. It's not as if we're able to see them on display as it is. The castles and palaces would all stay open and generate the same revenue. It's not like we're executing them. We could just pay them a LOT less, open up Buckingham Palace to the punters, let them fly EasyJet and take away any power they still have. Done deal.

They cost us a lot more than 38 million each year, some estimates quadruple that figure when adding in security and other fees. Some reports say 300 million return on tourism........but as I said, IMO they'd still come to visit regardless of whether the monarchy is still 'active'.

But they don't rule us do they? We rule ourselves through Parliament. You could argue that they are not elected but given some of the buffoons that have got the job in the USA and other parts of the world perhaps it is better to keep some kind of Royal thing going as notional Head of State? Get shot of the irritating minor royals though and give the job to William once Liz pops her royal clogs. The royal family needs to be updated and the royal list trimmed back, but this stuff does still generate a lot of dosh through tourism. If we were to become a Republic, how would you feel with people like Blair lining up for the job as President? Where's the harm in some nice benign old lady waving and opening the few hospitals we can afford?

I may well be, I haven't looked into it. Your point is irrelevant.

I am British regardless, the same as the current royal family.

Thing is, once they go - no more Royal weddings, state funerals etc. An "active" monarchy, for all of is faults, does generate a lot more business for GB than a dead one.

Hang on. Are you of the opinion that no matter how many generations of family live in this country, then they are not able to class themselves as British? Does this apply to say, families from the indian sub continent who have moved here? Using that logic, you'd be more right wing that Dune and open to all sorts of accusations of racism. Surely someone as enlightened as you would view the current royal family as British, despite their ancestory.

No, it's not. You said you weren't totally unrelated, in which case, were you invited to the nuptials?

I'm English, same as Linford Christie. Doesn't make me related though.

If folk want to get all gooey over a family that they not related too then it's up to them, but forgive those of us who couldn't give a fat rats @rse about them.
