Wills and Kate - Be Careful!! May Offend!

Yes a hint in a sort of politically correct policemans sort of way suggesting you could be sensing there could be 'perceived racism' way. 'Run along son on this occasion but I am watching you'.

Isn't a "politically correct policeman" almost an oxymoron?

I'm not watching anyone, just pointing out whenever anyone says anything daft, and at other times providing people with some rope to see what they use if for.

Hmm, a 'hint' hey? I'm not sure I actually went that far, I made no accusations, gave him the benefit of the doubt, and avoided jumping to any conclusions. I think the very fact that I didn't get offended or tell him what to laugh at (or not) seems to have annoyed him even more.

On the contrary, you haven't annoyed me at all, i'm grateful that you have given me the benefit if the doubt, i long for you acceptance, he who makes the rules and decided where the line is that should not be crossed.

What if people found it funny. What sort of measures would you advocate?

Lets cut to the chase. Censorship is almost always a bad thing - it makes the censor look petty, the audience take more interest, and the censored start bleating on about being oppressed. But take Rwandan radio in 1994 - should the West have used their ability to block the transmission?

The thread is now becoming funnier than the video.

Irrespective of other accusations, one thing most people seem to have in common is that they just can't help replying one more time, to make one more little point or to try and get a snide comment in.

What actually is the point of most of the conversation on this thread now?

And yes, I know could ignore it, but I'm genuinely interested because I struggle to understand what motivation some of you have for seeking to constantly wind others up and/or having a go at each other. A bit sad surely...?

In my eyes, this thread started as a bit of puerile fun. If you liked it, great, if not, so be it... and yet here we are with all sorts of crap!

Well I'm enjoying it...

Like most humour, some will find it amusing, some will find it offensive, and some will not understand it. Personally I am waiting for the point in the service where the Arch Bishop starts "Will you take this woman...", at which point I expect Phil the Greek to shout out "He already has!".

Oh its just that we were talking about censorship in comedy; we seem to have switched to Rwandan genocide. Very random.

You were explaining how you do not believe in censorship in comedy and I was asking how you how if a similar youtube clip ridiculing the Japanese Royal Family causing a great deal of offence to the Japanese people. Would it then be a 'work of art' or would you seek to tell people that they cannot laugh at it.

Unsurprisingly, people like BTF, SuperMikey etc are p*ssing themselves over it , i'm sure they'd be condeming it if someone had done this for the King of Sudans wedding.

The only p*ssing going on in my house is me p*ssing myself laughing at you, once more, making false assumptions and resorting to stereotyping.

I said I 'found it quite amusing'. If that's your idea of 'p*ssing', you must be incontinent.

Is this hypothetical you tube clip funny? And if so, is it funny in a Peep Show satirical way, in a MOR Michael McIntyre way, or in a heck the BBC has lawyers so let's keep them employed Clarkson way?

Exactly. One mans humour is often offensive to another but please nobody tell me what I can an cannot laugh at.

Absolutely.

Although, can we agree that it probably wouldn't ever be acceptable to find Michael McIntyre funny?

The humour in the video is derived from the overdubbing by the creator to twist the meaning of Kate and William's words, NOT from their race, creed, culture, religion, nationality, appearance etc. People are very touchy on this subject - just because they are MotRF (or soon to be in Kate's case) doesn't mean that they're exempt from having a bit of fun poked at them or satirised (if you think that the video counts as satire). You could substitute K&W for almost anybody else and it would have the same effect.

I just thought it was pretty ****. But i'm not surprised that the Liberal Elite like to chortle at humour of the ilk of Michael MacIntyre and Deppo.

It is about identity

Race and culture define identity, but only to the same extent that height and weight define the appearance of a person, though often correlated, there's no necessary connection between 'height' and 'weight' in the same way that 'race' and 'culture' are not necessarily connected, but happen to be so in a lot of cases. For them to appear aligned and for them to be aligned are separate things entirely.

Also, on an unrelated point, if one accepted an absurd form of liberalism (and moral relativism) that led to isolationism (believing values to be relative to the extent that you cannot make negative judgements against other cultures [or conversely receive praise from other cultures] as one cannot truly understand their values - cultures essentially being isolated from one another in terms of criticism, "pc gone mad") then it would not be hypocritical to find this video funny, yet condemn it if it were of Imperial Japanese rulers. For it wouldn't be hypocritical to find humour in satirical poking of one's own culture (assuming all contributing to this thread are 'culuturally British' [whatever the **** that means]) but condemning poking fun at another's culture. As you're able to understand the nuances of your own culture, humour IS acceptable, but to satirically poke fun at (and in doing so pass judgement upon) another's culture would be wrong. There's no contradiction in holding such a position, if one accepted isolationism, which of course one wouldn't, as it's rather absurd.

Well to some it is 'a work of art' to others in Japan it offensive.

Hmmm, tough one Sergei. Obviously this hypothetical clip straddles the line of acceptability. This would tend to suggest that either it has offended traditionalists, or it has offended one minority group or other. My personal reaction would obviously depend upon the exact content, and I very much doubt I personally would either be offended or angered, unless the humour crossed one of our social lines: race, gender, sexuality etc.

I can't stand McIntyre. He personifies pretty much everything that is wrong with being bland and MOR. I guess that still puts him above the likes of Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning.

I assume this relegates me from being part of the liberal elite in your eyes? Either that or perhaps you have mistaken McIntyre's core fanbase?

Yes but if it featured the Japanese Royal Family you and the rest of the liberal illiberal would be calling for it to be banned and arrests to be made.

yes it s funny hearing the usual right wing cry babies of the daily mail complaining of their usual pc brigade nonsense gripe.

Jim Davidson, now there's a comedian devoid of all political correctness. I went, dragged kicking and screaming, to one of his shows at the Winter Garden once, probably because the prospect of nooky with a hot girl who had free tickets for some reason or other bypassed better judgement, anyway, he started picking on some poor asian bloke in the front row, calling him "Snipe" and making funny of his thick lensed spectacles, couldn't make fun of the 6ft 6,250 lb anglo saxon a couple of rows down who also had specs,oh no wouldn't have suited his agenda. Horrible little man.

Some evidence that you are wrong. And calling someone a retard is against the rules of the board - remember when you said people should follow the simple rules. I have reported your remark because I am sure you understand the need for rules to be followed (well, you seemed to understand when it was me who broke the rules)

Sorry, I was just reading this thread because Boj infracted me on it recently. Seems to have let other humourous comments pass though. How odd.

Just wear a t-shirt that says "Banned". Boj is intent on banning me before the end of the season. He infracted me for pointing out that we were level on points with Huddersfield the other day. I kid you not.

You clearly forgot that the internet and this forum in particular is serious business. Anything you say and do and in some cases even things you dont say or do may be used in evidence against you at a future date by the forum superstars.

Personally, I think Michael McIntyre is the least funny 'comedian' currently being inflicted upon the viewing public. I much prefer Dave Gorman, Bill Bailey, or Tim Minchin of the current lot, though the funniest thing I've seen recently was an old show by Robin Williams, particularly where he took the p!ss out of the Catholic Church.

I was watching the news earlier and they showed loads of people lining The Mall draped in Union flags getting ready for the royal wedding tomorrow. Was one of them you by any chance dune?

No. The only time i've worn a Union Flag was at a demo.

I quite like that Donald Trump chap, bit too OTT to be a truly believable though. IMO he's funnier than that former model who impersonates Tina Fey, she's just wrong.

No, but i'm a proud patriot and a staunch supporter of the royal family. I do apologise if that offends you.

I am a 'proud patriot' and staunch republican - I will not. however, bother to apologise is that happens to offend you. As for tomorrow, I am planning on a 75 mile bicycle ride to hopefully avoid all the tedium , fawning, sycophancy, and bling.
