Put it this way - when Adam Lallana is missing we look very average indeed, surely the sign of what is not only a quality player but a vitally important one too.

Mind I wouldn't argue with the those voting for Jose Fonte - he's been superb.

This. It is also obvious that other teams now double or triple mark him to try and stop him.

Fonte has been superb but there is nobody in this league who even comes close to being as good a footballer as Lallana is.

It's amazing how we kept hold of him, he has a huge future in the game. Doesn't matter how many games AL has played, he's been the best player by a huge distance. JF had a pretty poor spell midway through the season and is still prone to making the odd mistake, whereas I can't remember ever seeing Lallana do anything wrong.

Fonte is great, but Lallana is god.

Have to disagree. In fact I'd put it round the other way, as Lallana has been prone to making the odd mistake such as running into defenders instead of making an open pass.

Fonte for me.

All Hail the Über Fan with the longest schlong in the world.....

As it happens mine is 5 inches, so you are probably correct.

To be fair it does seem weird voting for something you haven't seen. Must remember to stick my votes in for the Soap Awards next year despite the fact I don't ever watch any, although I do hear people talk about them sometimes so I can obviously make a concise judgement on that.

The arguement against this though, is that had he not been brilliant in those games we may not have even got a point, we could have lost by several goals :)

But that's a hypothetical argument, there's clear evidence of Lallana's absence negatively affecting us.

stat of day

league goals

Lallana 7

Fonte 7

Not sure that means much.

Look at the stats on the OS Lambert has the most apperances, the most goals, the most shots and the most assits of any saints player

Fonte is also the top of some stats most fouls committed and most yellow cards.

If were going to use stats for this Lambert should be player of the season, Fonte should be dirtest player and Lallana should get nothing at all.............

+1 those three, in that order.

It's entirely logical that Alpine's 1-2-3 would mirror the most popular choices - as we know he doesn't attend matches and has basically only got comments of others to go on in building an opinion. Over a large group of responses over a season, the popular and unpopular would be pretty obvious and there wouldn't be any grey areas caused by seeing something others hadn't.

The need to be "right" (or in this case "as right as possible" by being in line with other fans) to strengthen his position as someone who knows about football is more important than his usual position of posting contrary and often unpalatable angles on existing topics.

They're similar in that each is based on the knowledge of what the majority of others will find arguable and designed to get as many responses as possible. It's broadly similar to the definition of trolling, but on the poll the key is to "match the majority" to look as knowledgeable as possible, whilst in "starting arguments" it's to oppose the majority.

In the spirit of this trollishness, my new 1-2-3 is :

1 Pulis - hard worker with a long career in football including at a Premier League club, I've also never seen him on the losing side in a Saints shirt.

2 Seaborne - he has very short hair, and that's the most accurate scientific measure of centre back ability according to some criteria from the world's most knowledgeable Sports Science organisation which I may once have seen online but can't find the link to right now. Also has covered well at left back, which Fonte hasn't.

3 Puncheon - Premier League player, say no more.

This stuff is easy.

Obviously there can be only one winner but I could think of many games in which most our first choice 11 have been game changing. Fonte earlier in the season and for recent goals, Jaidi has had some really good games. Lallana is spectacular and Davis has kept us in it on more than one occasion (Saturday at 1 up was one example, the pen save vs. Brighton another).

The unsung hero for me is Lambert. He's played a different role and hasn't been as free scoring, but the number of assists he has created have been essential. That said I've voted for Fonte, for clean sheets, cultured passing, important goals and an ability to get away with some very dodgy wrestling in the penalty area.

I don't look at it from the 'number of games' played perspective. I look at the players' overall impact on our performances over the course of the season.

By comparison, if Lallana came on for the last half hour of a game and scored a hattrick to secure a 3-0 win for Saints, who would get man-of-the-match? Fonte for helping to keep a clean sheet for 90 mins or Lallana for engineering the 3-0 victory?

Lallana every time for me.

Your ignoring the fact Fonte has not only been solid at the back, he has also scored some important goals.

Fonte hasnt been injured this season but I reckon he would be just a big a lose as Lallana was this season!

No, I'm not ignoring any of Fonte's credentials. He's a superb player and is within a hair's breadth of getting my vote.

I just happen to think Lallana edges it.

By choosing one player i'm not denying the quality of another.

That is all.

Damned for agreeing with people, damned for disagreeing with people.

Seems like some people on here need to get a life.

I see someone voted Hammond!

I can never bring myself to vote for the 'obvious' candidates in these polls.

Was thinking of voting 'Hammond' myself based on the 10 games I've seen but will now go away and reconsider ....

based on the 10 games I've seen would it be be deeply uncool to vote for KD? (and I'm not a fan ...)

As per my post on the other POTS thread

Like many on here : Lambert, Fonte & Lallana my top three, but given Adam has missed a third of the season must be between JF & RL. Both have been crutial in getting us where we are but given our defensive record and being the only constant in a ever changing back four plus his vital goals it has to be Fonte for me.

my final post for 24 hours - does anyone have previous Saints Web players of the season? Must have been Rickie last year?

09/10 - Rickie Lambert

08/09 - Simon Gillett

07/08 - Andrew Davies

06/07 - Chris Baird

05/06 - Not too sure on this one...Lundekvam?

That is because they are totally different players, a misplaced pass, mistimed tackle or header from Fonte would likely lead to a goal scoring opportunity for the opposition, if Lallana did this then it's much further up the pitch and less noticable. Lallana is a great footballer at this level and NPC level but we Fonte has been the best defender i've seen this season, he is just a class act and the 19 clean sheets are down in no small part to him. Plus he scored one of the most crucial goals of our season on saturday, for those reasons he gets my vote, by a whisker ahead of Lallana.

According to Bournemouth fans he is a clogger. LMFAO.

Can this poll be for people who actually go and watch the team play rather than those who are pretty much just guessing?

I have not voted as l sit at home and hide behind my keyboard typing sh-t about saints.........Mind you so do 80% of the other fans on here

Lallana gets my vote. Fonte is also a worthy winner so I don't have a problem with him being in front.

I'm sure this has been said already but, how has Seaborne got a vote and Schneiderlin and Chaplow haven't?

I was going to ask for a poll for us Saints who don't get to go to games, but I from reading the thread i don't think the result would be that different.

Fonte would get my vote. I'm not trying to be popular, just basing it on what I have read/seen on tv/saintsplayer over the season.

Last Election I did not meet one politician but still managed to come to a decision based on information available to me.

It is a lot harder to say who should win in comparison to last years. Lambert was by far the best player.

This year however there are a few who you could say deserve it and would not be annoyed if either of them got it.

But i think overall my vote goes to Fonte. He has been fantastic for most of the season. Him and Jaidi have struck up a good pairing and our goals against record is mostly down to those two guys.

Lallana is another player who has done really well and has changed so many games with a bit of individual magic. Our team looks a lot weaker when he does not play which shows how important he is to us.

So i'd vote

1. Fonte

2. Lallana

3. Jaidi
