Is this a joke?

To be fair, you could have put your hand up at any time and let people know that your avatar was from the League of Gentlemen, and not the Black and White Minstrel show. However, you let people carry on with that assumption, alternately tee-hee-ing, referencing a favourite comedy show and playing the victim of others judgmental tendencies.

Now, unless someone happened to watch S2 of the League of Gentlemen during that thread, there is no way they'd pick up on the reference. And you continue to whine about it now. Consequently, my sympathy level for your predicament is zero.

I am hurt by this, my raison d'etre is to be popular on this forum. As i say above i didn't think there was any need to justify the avatar as there was no racist intent whatsoever. People started to happily throw around the accusations and make assumptions looking for subliminal messages of racism when there weren't any and when corrected failed to show any humility for leaping to these conclusions it's not me that should be made the black sheep (can i say that? i hope no one is offended by this) of this forum, it's those that are oh so quick to judge.

Avatar assasination, who'd have thought something so insignificant could cause such a stir, some people have too much time on their hands and too little going on to occupy their minds it would seem.

I don't know,

I once shoved a stick into a bee hive, I was innocently trying to get some honey, until I explained to people that bees produce honey they all jumped to the wrong conclusion that I was a right ****wit who got what was coming to me.

Didn't bother me cos I got my honey regardless and am now considered an ace apiculturist, in my mind at least, others still think I'm a ****wit but I don't care what others think. I never tell the story to anyone anymore cos I realised being a ****wit was not a good thing except to other ****wits.

Apologies in advance if you think I'm calling you a ****wit, I'm not.

I can see 40 years of hurt coming, so let me put you out of your misery.

Combining your avatar with your clear enthusiasm for starting threads like this and the anti-semitism one - all about what you prefer to call 'political correctness' around the subjects of race, ethnicity and religion - led me to the obvious conclusion that the subtext of all this is that you wish to reserve the right to be a racist scumbag without actually being called one. I didn't call you a racist scumbag.

How could you possibly be offended by that?

Again, more sweeping statements, you really need to check your facts before commenting otherwise no one will take your "new very important political views" seriously in the wider world. I didn't start the anti sematic campaign thread and i started this thread and most seem to agree with me that being arrested for playing Kung Fu fighting at a party is ridiculous, as do the police who have dropped the charges. That combinded with my totally innocent avatar of a character from a comedy show led me to the conclusion that you reserve the right to be a petty haughty, judgemental scum bag without actually being called one, quick to accuse and criticise yet unable to back down when proven wrong, you'll probably make a great politician.

So your reason to exist is to be popular on saintsweb? Really?

You were innocent of the history of negative connotations of 'blackface' performance art, when you selected your avatar, and the thought that others might have initial negative thoughts didn't cross your mind eh? I find it hard to believe that anyone could be unaware of this, as it is the first association most of the population would make when viewing your avatar. Especially so for someone who seems to relish the controversial, and who deliberately tiptoes as close to the forum rules as possible. If one were more cynical, one might assume that the image were selected in an attempt to deliberate court controversy.

NB, yes you can say black sheep and black board, these phrases were only banned by potty individuals probably egged on with the incentive of tabloid cash. Nobody will take offense to them if used in a neutral context.

Yes it is. This place is the most important thing in my life.

I've already said plenty of times, my avatar was selected based on liking the character from the show, nothing more nothing less, it's other people who have made an issue out of it. If people want to be judgemental and leap to conclusions about it and even when told what it is still continue to attempt to justify their accusations thats up to them, but it says more about them than it does about me.

I'm well aware of what you say you were thinking, and haven't made any accusations. Nobody is being judgmental. Why then do you continue to play the 'victim'?

If your intentions are truly innocent, might I suggest you switch the avatar for a different character from the same show? That would allow you to show you love of the comedy, but avoid any further unintentional offense and misunderstanding that you are now aware that your avatar will continue to cause. Obviously, now that you know your avatar can offend, and as that is not your intention, i assume you will be changing it as soon as possible?

Should i put a disclaimer underneath it just to satisfy everyone? Should i go on every thread and post who my avatar is at the bottom of every post just in case it offends people? It's already been discussed on another thread, i didn't feel the need to justify it again and again. It's only an avatar FFS.

This is my favourite character from the show, why should i settle for someone else? Why should i switch it to someone else because people are ignorant of the show and have their own agendas? The avatar has been explained, not that it needed to be, it's the usual people making an issue of it, it's not my fault people assumed it was something it wasn't. I've had it for a while now and no mods have contacted me to ask me to change it due to the offence it may cause some, so clearly not offensive at all. We are all tolerant people (when it suits us), so i dont see why i should change my avatar as it's simply a character from a TV show, live and let live dont forget.

Why should he change his avatar after he's already explained its to do with some show? Some sad, sad people on here if your offended by someone's avatar when you assume its something its not. Keep it Turkish I like it.

Oh don't you worry, he'll keep it. People aren't questioning his avatar, moreso his intentions.

Yet you're bringing it up again and again.

I don't give a flying f*ck if this makes me appear judgmental in your eyes, but you knew what you were doing from day one with your choice of avatar. If you're really that much of a fan of the League of Gentlemen, there are plenty of characters you could have picked to show your love for the series. Papa Lazarou doesn't even have that much screen time, ffs. You picked the avatar because you knew full well it had other connotations.

You knowingly let people proceed from a false assumption, hoping that they would look more idiotic with each post that referenced it. Even now, after the provenance of the avatar has been established, you continue to make pathetic bleats of innocence and wear your faux-victim status as a badge of honour.

Taken overall, the whole episode makes you look like a bit of a tube that derives his pleasure from trying to make others look small. Others may have made assumptions, but you're still crying about it days later.

If that makes me judgmental, give me a wig and call me Your Honour.

Err no i dont, i'm simply replying to people who are judging and being critical, like yourself. If it was that offensive then why, despite having it for months, have no Mods asked me to change it? I'm not "crying" about it, merely pointing out how quickly some of our forum superstars and guardians of politcal correctness are to critise and accuse based on assumptions and ignorance. Ironic that this is the very thing they would accuse racist of. As for yourself, you appear to be very good at speaking for me and telling me what i think, maybe you've spent a bit too much time watching Papa Lazarou's circus act.

I think you'll find if you read an above post from a forum hero it was mentioned so i was proven right, something along the lines of "my love for starting threads like this one and the anti semtism one along with my avatar" was said (although i didn't start the anti sematic one but why let the truth get in the way of a chance for unfounded criticism).

No, you feel more sorry for them, you deliberately chose to say you feel sorry for me because you knew of the connotations. You could have said you felt sorry for another poster but you deliberately didn't and you now wear your faux donator to the Turkish cause as badge of honour.

Should you put a disclaimer on? Clearly not.

Should you explain at the bottom of each post? Again, no.

Would it be sensible to briefly explain what your avatar is, in a post of say 7 words ("it's a character from League of Gentlemen"), when it's obvious that a misunderstanding has occured that is completely skewing the thread of discussion, particularly considering that you are one of the most prominent participants in the discussion? Yes, that would be sensible and would take seconds.

Is there any possible reason why you wouldn't want to clear the issue up, it being quite an understandable mistake for anyone who hasn't seen the League of Gentlemen to make? Yes, you wanted to be controversial and win your own straw man argument.

On a thread about people jumping to conclusions based on partial evidence, you've managed to portray yourself as a victim by deliberately withholding the crucial piece of evidence. Brilliantly done.

Funny how almost any thread can turn into a chimpanzee sh!t-slinging contest within a few posts.

Oh SWF, shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperamental....

That's beautiful Mikey. Are you at Uni yet and if so are you high up in student union circles yet? This is your calling IMO. That and being a poet of course.

I think you'll find i did this on post 28 of this thread, over 100 posts and 2 pages ago, as well as discussing it on other threads, so i didn't with hold any crucial evidence, as you put it. They claim i haven't explained myself quick enough, when in fact the "evidence" as you put it is there for all to see on post 28 of this thread. Hilariously the people who are quickly jumping to accussing me of all sorts of things then go on to tell me what i was thinking and my motivation 6 months or so ago when i changed my avatar from another fictional character to this one. Not only they are the guardians of equality but are also retrospecitve mind readers! If i was so intent on playing the victim and being controversal why has it taken 6 months or so for the Avatar to have become an issue? Surely i'd be drawing attention to it myself from the moment i uploaded it. The hypocrisy of some people is outstanding.
