Chez Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 why oh why do fans get so wound up when we do anything but lump it forward at every chance we get.. been saying it for weeks. Thankfully the team seem to know what they are doing and that's we are now scoring goal late on because we have the ball and we actually create chances rather than hope for the best. Keep passing it chaps...
ericofarabia Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Fantastic set-piece - tried a carbon copy at Orient and almost came off. great it did today - they looked pretty dangerous with 10 men. great skill / discipline shown by both players, and credit to backroom staff - no signal given as to where it was going to go - Ricky said on SaintsPlayer it was only the last moment decision to curl it rather than shoot - but obviously the training sessions got it so perfected that it was choreographed to perfection without any obvious indications as to what was going to happen. Also Jose's run took him into an area where any palm outs from a direct shot might well have fallen. Ricky's rep as a goal scorer from free kicks in that position would have ben foremost in the defenders/keepers mind - well done all round for being focused. terrasaint Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Technically no, but barring a set of freak results, yes. But counting of chickens prematurely is not to be encouraged. We are Southampton. This season is showing why the play-offs are a bad idea and should be scrapped. The 3 best teams should be promoted, end of. +1.

S-Clarke Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Some fans don't seem to understand the term winning professionally. Which is what we've been doing for months and doing very well. It's what good teams do. At the end of the day we have had a hectic schedule, we have 2 tough games in quick succession next weekend. What's best? Play your socks off and push forward to try and score more...or slow it down, take a breather and play out the final 10mins at 2-0? I know what I'd tell the players to do if I was manager. Oh there were, certainly towards the Itchen side of the Chapel, made me laugh at times when we were keeping the ball well and all you could hear every now and then were the groans as the ball went sideways or backwards. Shame these idiots could not see that with 9 men in blue and white behind the ball the last thing to do was hump it into the box. This was brought out with the lovely move to put DC in when he should have scored, some lovely pass and move and one touch football.

Jonnyboy Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Great day out! Props to Guly for making the penalty with his backheel (and getting theirs sent off). How the fook did Connolly miss that 1 on 1 with the keeper?! Lallana still not 100% fit but still great. Only poor players were Seaborne, Richardson and CHaplow IMO. Barry the Badger Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 I can't understand it either - I didn't even look at the lino. Any chance that Lallana was offside in the build up? I always have a look at the lino before celebrating if I think there's any chance of offside. I'm always the one who has to stop my mates celebrating, but today I was off celebrating with the rest of them because it didn't even occur to me to check. I hope they show it on the FL show. mitch01 Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Quality day, almost didn't make it due to a bout of illness yesterday but chuffed I went along. Davis 7.5, Good display, caught everything and one good save when Richardson left a through-ball. Richardson 6.5, not the best I've seen him play, almost cost us a goal with some hesitance at the back. Fonte 8, class, as always. A force at the back and a threat going forward, what more could you want? Seaborne 7.5, defended well and distribution much improved on what I have seen from him in the past. Harding 7.5, good overlapping play. Been very impressed with Dickson recently but Harding was just as much of a threat going forwards. Guly 8.5, MOM for me. Almos scored with some great skill in the first half, always a threat. Stephens 7, a few wasteful passes but always supported the play. Better than I've seen him before. Hammond 6.5, pretty quiet compared to his recent displays. Lallana 7.5, not at his best after injury, a few wasted chances in the first half. However, when he's off form he's still better than most players out there and he skipped past defenders at will in the second half. Connolly 7, good link-up play but should have scored late on. Lambert 8, quality. Never looks like missing a penalty. Superb assist for the second goal.

Wes Tender Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 (edited) Credit due to Hartlepool, who came to give us a game and sought to try and get 3 points. Up until half time, they had given a decent enough account of themselves, even though we dominated most of it. But they had the odd chance or two, whereas we had also failed to convert the chances that fell to us. Sometimes it happens, as it did in the Walsall match, that you can dominate and have numerous chances which you do not take, whereas the other team have one chance and take it and win the match. So when we went in front through the Lambert penalty, I was still nervous. We stroked the ball about, having large periods of possession against a side a man down, who didn't often commit themselves too far forward, in case we caught them out with the sucker-punch. So they sat back and we passed it sideways, forward, back, sideways again. It all looked very pretty, but once or twice, there were some nervous moments when we gave the ball away and a quick counter-attack, or a bad mistake like the one Richardson made, could have lost us two points. I could almost see the situation whereby we played the match out like that until Hartlepool scored the equaliser in the last minute and we rued the time we had wasted passing the ball about without penetration. Thankfully, we gained a free kick right in Lambert territory. I think most thought that he would have a crack at scoring from it, but I had an inkling that something else would happen. I said to the guy next to me that he would hit it onto Fonte's head and it would end up in the top left corner and they both duly obliged. I had thought that Fonte had sealed player of the season on Saturday, but if there were any doubters out there, this second goal in two vital matches must have clinched it. The second goal gave us the breathing space we needed and then we could justifiably play the possession passing to run the clock down comfortably. Performances worthy of a mention were Lallana, Fonte (of course), Lambert, Harding, Guly Kelvin and Connolly. Connolly in particular was excellent, I thought. He seemed fit enough to keep going up to the final whistle and was a constant thorn in their side. If he can keep going until the end of the season, he will have been a superb replacement for Barnard if he carries on as he has. I am really beginning to feel that with Lallana back, rumours that Schneiderlin might return, Dickson, Richardson, Forte, Chaplow, Gobern all available as useful players who we can use one match and rest the next, we have quite a complete set of players to take us to the line. The confidence in the team must be sky high after these 6 points over Easter, especially as we have been the only team to have beaten Brighton at their home. Posh have fallen by the wayside, so it is only us and Huddersfield, who have to play Brighton. The crowd today were magnificent and there is now a real belief that we can finish the job and get automatic promotion.
