Saints V Hartlepool 2-0 Post Match Chat

SOTONS EAST SIDE

Recommended Posts

Never best before was last year 83 (without the deduction) or 77 in the old league 1 when we had our best season ever in the 80's finishing 2nd in the top division to Liverpool (just 3 points off the champions)

OK lets factor in the old 2 points per win back in the day - and as far as I can see and can be arsed to do, is the last time we were promoted from the 3rd tier back in 59/60 with 26 wins and 9 draws would equal 87 nowadays - so we will hopefully better that in the next 2 games and set up a un pressurised promotion day party v Walsall ... and NO mention of skates please.

A very patient performance, thought the sending off was a little harsh having said that IMO that was one of the better refs we have had this season. DC was my MOM just for staying on the pitch for 90 mins. Just one wish, hold off on the Saints are going up chants till we are certain of it please as we always make things hard for ourselves.

Well played Saints, thoroughly professional performance this afternoon. Sat in my usual seat in Block 29, I have to say I was utterly astounded at the impatience of the people around me, urging us to lump it forward when 1-0 up against 10 men in sweltering heat. It beggars belief that these people couldn't understand the reasons for our style of play, the start whinging as soon as 'pool had any possession :x

Anyway, rant over

José Fonte Baby.....

Funniest thing about this promotion race? This somehow seems more important to me than going up from the Championship to the Prem!..........I've lived most of my life with Saints in the top division. I can handle the Championship, and I can understand that we may actually belong there if we were to ditch all ambition...........But this division? No way. this division smells of vomit and broken dreams. This division is the strange uncle that touched me in an inappropriate place. This division is the place that tramps don't crap in because it's too smelly.

Time for me to get my tab and leave :?

Didn't Torquay win the league that year? Whatever happened to them?

Even more warm fuzzy feelings going on - whats it going to be like when we are statistically sure of promotion!!!:poundit:

The result was never really in doubt once they went down to 10, we kept the ball brilliantly at times, Connolly is a very clever player and his movement is quality. Nice to give Lallana and Fonte a rest, and I had Saints to win 2-0, Fonte to score last....happy days.

That's one. Two more and we're over the line. Don't know if my nerves can take it though because you can bet that Hudds will push us all the way, and if Brighton defend like they did today against Hudds next week then you wouldn't bet against them winning.

One more win for us and Huddersfield will give up and start their play-off preparation, they know we won't crack now.

Leave it out FFS

agree, skates are just a club we will be passing on way up, they add nothing to me wanting to go up. Look how silly cherries plus brighton look going on about us

What was the song directed at Davis around the 70th minute mark (whilst there was a break in play due to the Hartlepool injury)? Couldn't hear it properly from where I was, but I saw Kelv and the rest of the Northam raise a smile when it was sung.

JUst back, stopped off in the royal oak while the traffic died down. Couple of heartstopping moments, but overall pretty convincing I thought, particularly given the brighton game. Just a pity daggers couldnt muster up an equaliser, that would have put even more of a shine on today. Agree with Connolly as MOM, I thought he was terrific throughout.

Still in our hands if we keep our nerve, COYR

It was 1-0 at the time and we were singing "Kelvin, what's the score?" and he gave his usual calm down, not just yet gesture so we gave it "Kelvin Davis... He can't f*****g count!"

Tis common practice when SKD is down our end and he always appreciates it.

Bit worried about Fonte, holding his left thigh when he came off and had a couple of ice packs on his leg. AL took a lot of stick, hope he recovers for saturday. Great win, perfect easter results, next stop Brentford.

Good professional result, which we have got a habit of producing at the moment.

Was hoping Daggers would do us a favour today (they almost did tbf) but onto Saturday......it's going to be pretty nerve racking! Brentford are a decent team but they now have nothing to play for. We really need to win one of our remaining 2 away games though - I fear we'll drop points at Plymouth as they'll be fighting for their lives...amazing they still have a chance.

Walsall might also be in a desperate position when we play them. We'd best wrap this up at Brentford then.

Great to get another 3-points closer to what we all want! Automatic promotion. Big Big weekend coming up, just hope Brighton are up for it, & we don't f**k up at Brentford. A win on Saturday & we will be almost there whatever hudders do at Brighton. COYR

You have to feel gutted for whoever misses out on automatic promotion - obviously less gutted for Hudders - but have always felt the play offs were completely unfair - the whole point of the league is it is over the entire season, which is why we have the cup competitions, so why turn the league in to a mini cup compoetition at the end just to boost the TV revenues?

Anyway hope both of us get through eventually - us in 2nd, Hudders via play off's - they have earned it!

Good solid win, didn't ever feel like we were under any great threat, and the biggest worry was that it'd be one of those days and we'd draw.

What was the lino opposite the tunnel on? Gave one offside against 'pool in the first half from a throw in, missed a couple that were off by a mile, gave offside a few times when it was clearly on, clearly wasn't biased as he was equally crap for both sides, but he just couldn't do the job.

Playing devils advocate in the hope it doesnt happen, brighton roll over for them (fnarr fnarr), brentford knacker themselves completely playing us in their 'cup final'.......write the rest of the script yourself....

So, Guly's goal in the first half. I was in a straight line with him and there was no way he was offline (bang goes the reputation if saintsplayer shows he's miles off). However, I'm usually very quick at noticing that the linesman's flagged but the first time I realised it was flagged offside was when I did the cursory look to the away fans for a quick chant of 'who are you' (or even 'where are you' today) and they were waving. Checked lino and saw the flag. Am I getting blind in the old age or was it a late flag?

Also, anyone think it was offside?

Anyhow, 2-0 - fantastic result. We win on Sat and Brighton put one up Hudders and jobs a good un.

Didn't think Guly's goal was offside, it didn't look it at the time, i usually check before i start celebrating as well.

Nice performance, kept possesion really well in the 2nd half

Little nervous at time but we got the job done.

Thought it looked a higher attendance than 24,000 (which is a little disappointing to be honest).

A lot of the empty seats were down to the crap away support though (not that I really blame the Hartlepool supporters for staying at home).

scores on the doors:

Davis: 7 - Easy day, but there when it mattered.

Richardson: 6 - Supported Guly well, but several dodgy moments defensively

Fonte: 8 - Never troubled, dominated, got forward, scored (MoM)

Seaborne: 8 - Immense, put in some crucial tackles, passed well out of defence.

Harding: 8 - Great game, never troubled at the back, put in some good crosses.

Guly: 8 - Why was he subbed? Great game, great touches - goal wasn't offside

Hammond: 7 - Neat and tidy, got forward well

Stephens: 7 - Impressive, tackled well, some great passes to Guly and Connolly

Lallana: 7 - Business as usual, but sometimes tries to win it all by himself

Connolly: 7 - Ran his socks off, linked up well

Lambert: 6 - Gonna be controversial! Made/took pen well, assist for second goal, but looked tired and generally second to the ball for most of the match

Subs:

Forte: 6 - Competent, not much chance to shine

Chaplow: 5 - Looked lost when he came on, caught in possession too many times. Silly fouls given away in dangerous positions.

Martin: 7 - Slotted in well, not really under much pressure though

Good win couple of squeaky bum moments

Thought Connolly played very well but Fonte gets my MOTM

Lino on the kingsland side needs to learn the offside rule as he flagged for an offside from a throw in (muppet)

Davis 7 Nothing to do really but collected everthing in the air and one good block when Richardson c3cked up

Harding 7 overlapped Al well and some good crosses defended well

Fonte 9 won everything cool and calm on the ball MOTM

Seabourne 6.5 couple of missed passes won most in the air

Richardson 6 couple of good overlaps looked exposed alot and c3cked with indicission which causing an almighty scramble

Lallana 8 class player allround jinked in and out the defenders where scared to touch him

Hammond 6.5 drifted in and out of the game

Stephens 7 cleaned up in front of the defence some good direct passes

Guly 7.5 lovely 1-2`s with lambert was his goal offside ?? looked knackered at the end

Lambert 8 good knock downs passes and fantastic free kick won the Pen

Connolly 8.5 good running, held the ball up. should have scored great build up play with AL

Forte 5 not really on long enough but a couple of good runs

Chaplow 7 didn`t stop running good passing

Martin 5 again not really on long enough but look good

Why would they take the ****? We are rivals and have a mutual hatred with them.. Unlike with B'mouth.

I sit in line with the 18 yard box in The Kingsland, i thought he was off-side,as soon as the cross went in i looked and the flag went up, was surpised that i was the only one not celebrating the goal.

It was tight and he may well have been on, but the flag wasnt late.

It's embarrassing because Bompey aren't our rivals in any way. The skates actually are our rivals...

....but not the be all and end all of next season .. just a little local distraction from our 5 year plan - The Prem.

TBH I'd rather they got a massive point deduction and end up relegated rather than have a big pay day from our visit to their p!ss poor excuse of a stadium, plus the hype etc that could distract us from our main aim.

Please slap the 1st person and anybody who joins in any Pompey here we come chants.

Excellent result.

We make it far too hard for ourselves at times.

We'd be fooked without Kelvin.

Guly's goal wasn't offside (although I've not seen a replay...).

Lambert should have been taken off instead of Guly (with Guly placed up front with DC), he looked knackered.

We need somebody to take the pressure off of Lallana next season (in the CCC).

Chaplow is faster than I thought.

That's my thoughts for the game. My brain can't do any more than lists right now.

Oh, one more thing... I wish we would play Lambert in a central role only. I'm fed up with seeing our most dangerous and prolific striker on the wing, in defence and generally anywhere else but the a central forward position. We should aim at him and get the ball to him, not rely on him getting the ball to others.

I enjoy our games with Pompey more than any other. Atmosphere, build up, the tension and the sheer hatred between the two sets of fans.

Pompey here we come ;)
