ericofarabia Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Never best before was last year 83 (without the deduction) or 77 in the old league 1 when we had our best season ever in the 80's finishing 2nd in the top division to Liverpool (just 3 points off the champions) OK lets factor in the old 2 points per win back in the day - and as far as I can see and can be arsed to do, is the last time we were promoted from the 3rd tier back in 59/60 with 26 wins and 9 draws would equal 87 nowadays - so we will hopefully better that in the next 2 games and set up a un pressurised promotion day party v Walsall ... and NO mention of skates please. Toomer Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 A very patient performance, thought the sending off was a little harsh having said that IMO that was one of the better refs we have had this season. DC was my MOM just for staying on the pitch for 90 mins. Just one wish, hold off on the Saints are going up chants till we are certain of it please as we always make things hard for ourselves. saintds Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Well played Saints, thoroughly professional performance this afternoon. Sat in my usual seat in Block 29, I have to say I was utterly astounded at the impatience of the people around me, urging us to lump it forward when 1-0 up against 10 men in sweltering heat. It beggars belief that these people couldn't understand the reasons for our style of play, the start whinging as soon as 'pool had any possession Anyway, rant over José Fonte Baby..... ericofarabia Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Funniest thing about this promotion race? This somehow seems more important to me than going up from the Championship to the Prem!..........I've lived most of my life with Saints in the top division. I can handle the Championship, and I can understand that we may actually belong there if we were to ditch all ambition...........But this division? No way. this division smells of vomit and broken dreams. This division is the strange uncle that touched me in an inappropriate place. This division is the place that tramps don't crap in because it's too smelly. Time for me to get my tab and leave

LGTL Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 The result was never really in doubt once they went down to 10, we kept the ball brilliantly at times, Connolly is a very clever player and his movement is quality. Nice to give Lallana and Fonte a rest, and I had Saints to win 2-0, Fonte to score last....happy days.

Window Cleaner Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 That's one. Two more and we're over the line. Don't know if my nerves can take it though because you can bet that Hudds will push us all the way, and if Brighton defend like they did today against Hudds next week then you wouldn't bet against them winning. One more win for us and Huddersfield will give up and start their play-off preparation, they know we won't crack now.
ericofarabia Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Didn't Torquay win the league that year? Whatever happened to them? scotty Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 JUst back, stopped off in the royal oak while the traffic died down. Couple of heartstopping moments, but overall pretty convincing I thought, particularly given the brighton game. Just a pity daggers couldnt muster up an equaliser, that would have put even more of a shine on today. Agree with Connolly as MOM, I thought he was terrific throughout. COYR You have to feel gutted for whoever misses out on automatic promotion - obviously less gutted for Hudders - but have always felt the play offs were completely unfair - the whole point of the league is it is over the entire season, which is why we have the cup competitions, so why turn the league in to a mini cup compoetition at the end just to boost the TV revenues? Jimmy_D Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Good solid win, didn't ever feel like we were under any great threat, and the biggest worry was that it'd be one of those days and we'd draw. What was the lino opposite the tunnel on? Tractor_Saint Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 So, Guly's goal in the first half. I was in a straight line with him and there was no way he was offline (bang goes the reputation if saintsplayer shows he's miles off). However, I'm usually very quick at noticing that the linesman's flagged but the first time I realised it was flagged offside was when I did the cursory look to the away fans for a quick chant of 'who are you' (or even 'where are you' today) and they were waving. Checked lino and saw the flag. Am I getting blind in the old age or was it a late flag? Also, anyone think it was offside? Anyhow, 2-0 - fantastic result. Pugwash Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 scores on the doors: Davis: 7 - Easy day, but there when it mattered. Richardson: 6 - Supported Guly well, but several dodgy moments defensively Fonte: 8 - Never troubled, dominated, got forward, scored (MoM) Seaborne: 8 - Immense, put in some crucial tackles, passed well out of defence. Harding: 8 - Great game, never troubled at the back, put in some good crosses. Guly: 8 - Why was he subbed? Great game, great touches - goal wasn't offside Hammond: 7 - Neat and tidy, got forward well Stephens: 7 - Impressive, tackled well, some great passes to Guly and Connolly Lallana: 7 - Business as usual, but sometimes tries to win it all by himself Connolly: 7 - Ran his socks off, linked up well Lambert: 6 - Gonna be controversial! Made/took pen well, assist for second goal, but looked tired and generally second to the ball for most of the match Subs: Forte: 6 - Competent, not much chance to shine Chaplow: 5 - Looked lost when he came on, caught in possession too many times. Silly fouls given away in dangerous positions. Martin: 7 - Slotted in well, not really under much pressure though

RobM Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Excellent result. We make it far too hard for ourselves at times. We'd be fooked without Kelvin. Guly's goal wasn't offside (although I've not seen a replay...). Lambert should have been taken off instead of Guly (with Guly placed up front with DC), he looked knackered. We need somebody to take the pressure off of Lallana next season (in the CCC). Chaplow is faster than I thought. That's my thoughts for the game. My brain can't do any more than lists right now. Oh, one more thing... I wish we would play Lambert in a central role only. I'm fed up with seeing our most dangerous and prolific striker on the wing, in defence and generally anywhere else but the a central forward position. We should aim at him and get the ball to him, not rely on him getting the ball to others.
