kpturner Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 Some real hysterics here about whether or not the team will be forming a Guard of Honour for Brighton on Saturday? http://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?199528-Southampton-to-not-form-a-guard-of-honour Apparently Adkins posts on twitter too - lol
Saint Garrett Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 Thats definitely a fake Nigel Adkins account. and I very much doubt they will be !
Matthew Le God Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 I doubt any Brighton fan could name 10 clubs out of the thousands of teams that have been promoted (or crowned Champions of a top league) in the last 120 years of world association football that have received a guard of honour. It is a relatively recent phenomenon and Saints are under no obligation to do it.
saint.tom.clancy Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 **** em, fair play they've won the league and deservedly so, but why should we give them a guard of honour? I wouldn't expect one of them. Maybe they should give us one for having more players in the team of the year
trousers Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 jordansibley Jordan Sibley Adkins also revealed Saints will be focusing on the game itself rather than any pre-match guard of honour for Brighton. #saintsfc

It is a relatively recent phenomenon and Saints are under no obligation to do it. Not so recent - Bradford City gave Saints a guard of honour when we won the Third Division back in 1959. Bradford had nothing to play for though and could afford such demonstrations of pleasantness...
paulwantsapint Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 give them a guard of honour offer them a red carpet if they want then give them a footballing lesson & then in 12 months time enjoy the fun of watching them battle the skates for worst team in league as we win it
Icey Saint Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 Just do it take the morale high ground were a massive club compared to them just look at their new stadium it just shows the level of ambition to only build 22000 seats So as said above give them a guard of honour onto the pitch then let them drag themselves off it after 90 minutes of footballing class from the mighty saints
benjii Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 I think we should do one but with our willies out.

I don't get it, we are miles from Brighton and I've always thought of them as a nice little club. It's like the Bournemouth thing all over again, they are obsessed bless em.
NickG Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 it is a compliment. Their forum has about 5 threads each day about us. Bit like I hate Man U.
September Saint Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 I think we should do one but with our willies out. In Brighton?!
Crab Lungs Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 it is a compliment. Their forum has about 5 threads each day about us. Bit like I hate Man U. Nearing 10-15 now. It's bizarre :-/
Crab Lungs Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 And now the Bournemouth fans think we're being disrespectful too. Lol.
Rebel Posted 21 April, 2011 Posted 21 April, 2011 The cr*p coming out of Bournemouth and Brighton this season has been amazing! Bournemouth really do have a chip on their shoulder about being the small club down the road that we used to lend players too and play friendlies against - but I think its mostly because half of the people in Bournemouth support Saints just like Adam Lallana and his family. They really don't like being a second club - which they were for a lot of our fans until this season! Brighton I don't get at all - I think a lot of its to do with hating Alan Pardew for his Palace connections and then the rumpus over the summer about Calderon supposedly been offered a better contract by Saints. Something which was not even true according to Cortese and was spouted out by Poyet! Its Calderon they should have an issue with not us! They also seem to forget they came to St Mary's earlier this season playing for a draw from the very first minute - not something to be proud of even if you've won the title. They left a bad taste in the mouth just like Billy Davies Derby County - but you had to admire both teams for their professionalism! If Saints had a little bit more of that street smart attitude - and maybe kept a bit of managerial stability - I think we'd still be fighting them for the title this season rather than trailing behind them in second place! Or first loser as some like to say!
stu0x Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Guard of honour?? Jesus Christ, they've won a few games of football, not returned from a tour of Helmand Province. And people say the modern game is disappearing up it's own arse...
Toadhall Saint Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I'm all for it - I really think it will play right into our hands TBH - reverse psychology and all that. We can clap them out onto the pitch as Champions and then beat them.
rooney Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Did we not give them a Guard of Honour at the last game at the Dell, after they had won the 1st Division Championship?
Badger Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Guard of honour?? Jesus Christ, they've won a few games of football, not returned from a tour of Helmand Province. And people say the modern game is disappearing up it's own arse... Nothing new in this, Blackpool formed a guard of honour and applauded us onto the pitch after we had reached the cupfinal in1976 (our first home game after the SF).

We can clap them out onto the pitch as Champions and then beat them. Ditto. Personally I think Brighton deserve it given their achievement, whilst it may leave a bitter taste to accept this by Adkins or whoever. Our response seems a bit churlish to be honest. Did we not give them a Guard of Honour at the last game at the Dell, after they had won the 1st Division Championship? Got a feeling we did. They certainly ran out parading their trophy.
Legod Third Coming Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Guard of honour?? Jesus Christ, they've won a few games of football, not returned from a tour of Helmand Province. And people say the modern game is disappearing up it's own arse... Worth reposting in case anyone missed it...
Junction 9 Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I say give them a guard of honour, and then break Calderons leg in the first minute.
eurosaint Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I think we should do one but with our willies out. Would you prefer them 'hanging out' or 'sticking out' ??
Alain Perrin Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I say give them a guard of honour, and then break Calderons leg in the first minute. Or his neck [nb. just trying to get a hysterical reaction on their forum before you do ]
Thedelldays Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 did brighton do a guard of honour for us last season for winning the JPT..?
saints-cris Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 did brighton do a guard of honour for us last season for winning the JPT..? Has anyone ever? I dont think anyone cared about it back then..! I know I didnt! Frankly I couldnt care less about a guard of honour, they just want something else to moan at us about
um pahars Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Nothing new in this, Blackpool formed a guard of honour and applauded us onto the pitch after we had reached the cupfinal in1976 (our first home game after the SF). Pompey didn't when we played them down there midweek after the Saturday Seim Final win!!!!!
Deppo Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I think we should give them a guard of honour, individual certificates with their names on, freedom of the city of Southampton, MBEs, some book tokens, all of our Tesco Clubcard points and a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. They have achieved a mighty feat after all.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 God almighty I hope the 900 or whatever pathetic number we're being forced in to taking to the Withdean bring out a loud rendition of "We don't care about you". Pathetic arsewipes, get off your high horses - who the **** cares?!?
Badger Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I think we should give them a guard of honour, individual certificates with their names on, freedom of the city of Southampton, MBEs, some book tokens, all of our Tesco Clubcard points and a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. BHA Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 And a years subscription to Arsebandit Weekly for each member of the Brighton squad. You should of been a comedian, how original, wouldnt expect anything else.
Badger Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 You should of been a comedian, how original, wouldnt expect anything else. Wondered how long you've been lurking.
Smirking_Saint Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Personally I think we should give them a guard of honour, they have had a decent season and have deserved to win the league. It would be nice however if afterwards we smash them 3-4 nil (probably won't happen but you never know with saints). I have no hatred of Brighton, in fact I am quietly chuffed they have been promoted, they will be insignificant again soon enough.
Miltonaggro Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 We should give them a walk of shame, with 'cheerleaders' dressed as the Village People. In the words of Vera Lynn, f*ck 'em...
Appy Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I think we should give them a guard of honour, individual certificates with their names on, freedom of the city of Southampton, MBEs, some book tokens, all of our Tesco Clubcard points and a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. They have achieved a mighty feat after all. Not the clubcard points surely! They'll want my house next!
Fan The Flames Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 I can't decide during this obligatory GoH whether we should give them a slow double high w@nker, a rapid single low w@nker or a fancy high low combo.
knellster Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Pompey didn't when we played them down there midweek after the Saturday Seim Final win!!!!! I appreciate that it was a long time ago, but I seem to remember that they did! Still can't get too worked up about whether or not we do tomorrow though.
Badger Posted 22 April, 2011 Posted 22 April, 2011 Personally I think we should give them a guard of honour, they have had a decent season and have deserved to win the league. Agree but yours is far too sensible and balaced view to gain momentum on here or amongst fans in general.
Cascadia Saint Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 We can give them a guard of honour off the pitch at the end if we win. Shouldn't make any difference to them, right? They want recognition for doing something a team does every year in every league in the ****ing world? Why should the team in 2nd place (3rd tonight) still fighting for promotion have to line up and kiss their arses? It makes no sense in a competitive league. It's just one more thing for their obsessed fanbase to fixate on. I really hope we beat them just to shut them the **** up.
suewhistle Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 Socal saint's compromise is one I'd been thinking of myself. It's not the last game of the season and we are still fighting for 2nd, why defer before the matcn. Beat them and then clap them off - a great compromise.
Miltonaggro Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 I can't decide during this obligatory GoH whether we should give them a slow double high w@nker, a rapid single low w@nker or a fancy high low combo. This seems a very sensible middle way, and would keep everybody happy...
SO5 4BW Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 I think we should do it - hopefully it'll annoy our players so much having to do it that it'll provide some extra motivation - as if any should be needed!
Saint_Jonny Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 (edited) Don't do it! *edit cos the image I posted was a bit minging... Edited 23 April, 2011 by Saint_Jonny
saintmatt Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 I've learnt this season that, along with P*mpey, Bournemouth and Brighton consider us their biggest rivals. This has parallels to a survey (see below) carried a few years ago where clubs like Rotherham and Barnsley considered Sheff Wed their biggest rivals; Bolton considered Man Utd their biggest rivals etc. I see it as a compliment, so let's enjoy it. http://www.footballfanscensus.com/issueresults/Club_Rivalries_Uncovered_Results.pdf
westofshannonsaint Posted 23 April, 2011 Posted 23 April, 2011 http://www.footballfanscensus.com/issueresults/Club_Rivalries_Uncovered_Results.pdf Interesting reading. apparently we are bompey's traditional rival and they are our third rival (following Skates & Spuds).
