Swansea_Saint Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Am heading over to new york from the 2nd to 7th May. Any recommendations for cheap travel insurance? Used the comparison sites but once I check the review for the company they seem b*llocks. Post office is £38 each for me and my girlfriend which seems a bit steep to me for only 5 nights. scotty Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Are you just wanting it for that single trip? Its usually way cheaper to get an annual policy. I can recommend Hydes in woolston, they do our annual cover for about 90 quid for me and the mrs, 02380445090, very helpful and friendly family company and they wont rip you off. Might sound steep, but it's very comprehensive cover! As suggested, check out the annual price if you're likely to be going away again in the next 12 months - also covers UK trips for two nights or more - something which most of us probably wouldn't even bother with, but bloody useful to have if anything does go wrong. Saint in Paradise Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 Have you checked the prices U.S. hospitals charge for even simple treatment ? Will make that 38 Pounds seem fantastic value for money.
angelman Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 I think I pay about £90 for annual world-wide for me, the Mrs and 3 kids. So £38 each for 5 days does sound a bit steep.
dune Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 As Michelle correctly points out the cheap policies aren't always comprehensive enough should the worst happen. Many policies are underwritten by the same insurer so look into this because if you do choose a cheap policy such as 1stop it's the same, if memory serves me correctly, as the AA i.e both underwritten by the same insurer. To be sure the post Office are a good bet as they are highly regarded. You get what you pay for.

It is when compared to an annual charge, however, I doubt it can be beaten by much if at all for a single trip insurance.

Channon's Windmill Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 I used moneysupermarket to find some cheap yet comprehensive cover for my trip to Jamiaca last year. I went with Columbus in the end. I will never go with a cheap and cheerfull quote again. It took months of phone calls/emails and arguments to eventually get my claim out of them - they used every trick in the book and all manner of small print to try and get out of paying out. Only my persistence won the day. In short - the next time I buy travel insurance, I will use a well respected insurance company. I know their are no guarantees, but I do feel I would have been better looked after by a bigger insurer. To quote one of the previous replies "you get what you pay for" - I am increasing finding that this is totally true for almost everything!! Window Cleaner Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 (edited) I never take out any travel insurance, paying with a Visa Gold card usually covers about all you need. Normal French Mutuelle assistance covers everything else. Edited 20 April, 2011 by Window Cleaner
Deppo Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 Have you tried the comparison websites? Failing that, the Post Office do travel insurance, usually quite reasonable.
Islander Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 Just checked on the travel insurance we use at work and the rate to us (trade) for 2 going to New York for 5 days in May is £51.00 in total. Unfortunately I can't book it as it can only be used for our clients but this may give you an indication of the commission!!
