The Hants Thread

That heavy defeat against Surrey was quite nicely timed i think. BIt of a kick up the 'arris to show we aint invincible, and better to get a poor display out of the way before the knock out stages (obviously). If memory serves we played Warwicks in last years quarters after they went through their qualifying group with only 1 defeat and spanked their bottoms.

Back to a good performance yesterday, lets hope that continues

Hampshire team v Sussex Monday - Thursday

JHK Adams, MA Carberry, LA Dawson, ND McKenzie, JM Vince, SM Ervine, DG Cork*, DR Briggs, AM Bates†, Kabir Ali, Imran Tahir

We won the toss and bat

Only two seamers in our side with Ervine as back up. Two spinners with Dawson as back up!

So, Sussex move to 106/4 approaching lunch, Prior out for only 5, Wells the opening still there on 47no. They're scoring slower than we did (2.46 v 2.57) and have lost 1 more wicket than us at this point.

So, expect that tail to wag big time this afternoon...!

125-5 at lunch with Wells out for 49

On another front David Balcombe on loan to kent has just taken 5 wickets in the second innings to add to his 2 in the first.

Afridi out of the T20 on Friday as has flown home to Pakistan as his dad is ill.

How come players are doing so well away from Hampshire...Jones, Balcombe what is wrong as we couldnt buy a wicket in the CC?

First you have to remember that this is the wicket that was used for our T20 on Sunday, is looking two paced and is taking spin. We have 2 days to go and we have two world class spinners to Sussex one.

Monyy was called into action in over 7 of this innings. That should tell you a lot about the wicket.

Without any prolonged rain this looks a result game and providing we take it carefully we should have the upper hand.

Edit 61-2 at the close.

Innings scores getting higher, dont bode well! Berkshire said its worn and turning, altho Monty only got 3 wickets I'm still hoping our turners will do the honours and get us a win.

I'm going for a win by 18 runs!

Now that Hants are as good as relegated perhaps they might start playing some more of the home grown crop like Wood and Howells - and put players like Ervine out to pasture. And what on earth was the signing of those 2 Kolpaks about?

What a disappointing season and just goes to show money can't buy success....there is no substitute for hunger and team spirit.

Absolutely devastating blow as we had put ourselves in a position last evening where we should have won today.

Tahir was banned from bowling the rest of the innings after running down the wicket this morning. Ali was not used by Cork “as a precaution” so I assume he was carrying an injury.

We went into this game one bowler short and we have paid the price.

Eight games to go and we need to win at least 4 of them. Not impossible but improbable

Hmmm, can still be done but I wouldn't be throwing the youngsters in just yet. Besides, I'm really not sure if Howell is good enough and is a prospect, unlike Briggs, Wood etc.

All season we've really lacked the belief to hit anything past 300 or any killer instinct to finish teams that are practically on the ropes. Very, very frustrating.

No not really, it can't be done.It couldn't be done from he day we lost to Worcs. That was the must win game and our bowling made sure that we had no chance whatsoever. Until we find a genuinely decent bowler who can rout tails and scare 6s,7s and 8s into daft strokes we will struggle in 4 day (real) cricket. Those of you who saw Derek Shackleton, Andy Roberts and Malcolm Marshall will know what I mean.

While I don't disagree with you that we are struggling to bowl sides out, which hasn't been helped by Tahir and the entire seam attack struggling with injuries at some point this season, I think the batting is a bigger problem. We have an average first innings score of 260 this year which isn't nearly enough and have only passed 300 three times in either innings of eight games so the bowlers have never had anything to bowl at.

But you only have to look at the last game to see that I'm right, we had Sussex in trouble at about 180/8 and with a decent mop up bowler we could have had a first innings lead

on a difficult pitch. But no,we allowed them to pick up another 60 or so for the loss of a couple of tail-enders, spinners aren't always effective against strong arm sloggers at 9 and 10 you know, the finer points of batting are lost on them, they don't play strokes, they slam the ball over midwicket if they can.I am not a fan of too many spinners in the side, what I want to see is a real fast bowler or a Shackleton stereotype with a vast range of

balls and unerring accuracy, if you missed against the Shack the ball hit the stumps or you

were lbw.

The main problem in the 4 day game is the batting. Dawson apart[and even he has struggled since coming back from injury],the top 6 batting has been awful, whether it is the case of them all being out of form at the same time is debatable. Maybe one or two or even three are past their sell by date.[i hope this is not the case].

Myburgh and De Wet have to be two of the worst kolpak signings of all time for any county. Even if we had only got him in for the second half of the season surely Chanderpaul plus Chris Gayle for the first couple of months for the first half of the season would have been a better option.

There really has been some strange decisions at the club. Myburg and De Wet being only one. Why spend so much time on rehabilitating Jones just to loan him back to Glamorgan ? Why sign Ali when clearly he is not fit ? Why did Tremlett feel the need to leave to better his game ? Letting Lumb go to the IPL when he only played for a few minutes ? etc etc.

Great shame last night as there was a good crowd.

We were flying along as well with Ervine and McKenzie in full flow nearly 9 an over.

Bloody rain!!

I agree with you Manji...our recruitment in the last few years has been awful.

I wonder if its something else....Tremlett, Jones and even young Balcombe takes wickets elsewhere.

Plus look at how many injuries we get....Lumb for instance.

good to see you check the Hampshire site regularly.
Corect Manji, that is where I got the information on this occasion.

Ground naming rights being negotiated at the moment and may be announced in a few weeks. Don't know who as it is a close secret until it is completed. Saint in Paradise, who knows me personally is also correct.

Do you think it's a bit late to be naming the ground? It's been the Rose Bowl for so long and that's how everyone refers to it.

A bit like when Rupert wanted the Friends Provident Stadium. Everyone still called it St Marys. I suppose that the sponsor pays for his name to appear in newspaper reports and on TV. The ordinary fan will still call it the Rose Bowl.

It is all about investment. The Commercial Director we now have is the best thing that has happened to Rosebowl plc for a while. I liked Stuart, the previous one. He was a good guy and did good things but Zac is at least a level above. He is working day and night to get us to move forward financially. His contact book is second to none.

You are clearly a commited Hampshire fan but please dont pretend you are ITK. Any "info" you have provided is readily available to anyone who regularly frequents the Rose Bowl. There are enough psuedo-ITKers on the main board.

Sorry for the interruption, but I'm a bit confused... why has no one started having a go at Weston Saint for being an ITK yet? ;-)

This is SaintsWeb after all, it has a reputation to keep up...

I knew it was a matter of time.

manji, Weston simply posts what he feels is appropriate, and it's up to us to judge and decide for ourselves. A lot of us don't get to the Rose Bowl and it is interesting to hear what he posts, as it would be had anyone else posted it it.

If any of it had proven to be wrong then naturally we would be more sceptical. As it is, it has all proven to be correct and so those of us who don't get along learn to value his posts. If anyone else did the same, exactly the same would happen.

I don't think it's fair to label him an ITK, as this tends to be used for those who are trying to gain praise or reward in return. IMO he doesn't do it for kicks, or to claim any kind of kudos, just to be helpful to fellow fans.
