The Hants Thread

Agreed...we had no acceleration in the batting and without Dawson we would of been humiliated....well we were anyway but you get my drift. What was Ervine doing out there...he was apalling and needs dropping.

The bowling...I didn't think we bowled too bad but didn't get any luck, the turning point was Jones he had O'Brien where he wanted him after hitting him on the hand and then bowled 2 wide balls short that allowed him to crack 2 fours and get back in it.

We miss Adams, Lumb, Carberry and Pothas badly.

Our team seems very lack lustre - it all needs a shake up and a bit of rattle and roll.

Not surprising really, with the crap bowling that we have which is proving incapable of

preventing the opposition from scoring shedloads time and time again the situation inspires no confidence in anyone.See our opening bowlers have gone for 37 off of the first 5 overs or so again today. Whatever the batsmen do it won't be enough because they will always be faced with impossible totals.

Went on Friday and have to say not only was the performance awful but the turnout was too. Maybe its still a bit early in the season or there's no real love for the 40 over game or maybe its the ****e start to the season we've had. But... £3.70 for a pint? And £8.00 for Burger and chips? Jesus! I've got tickets to all 5 days of the test in June, cant bring any beers in so fack me its going to be expensive!!! And i've been told by a friend who works there only 6,000 tickets have been sold for each of the first 3 days. Thats poor! Thought they'd virtually sell out Thursday Friday Saurday, but less than 1/2 so far

The team I would like to see tomorrow for the Championship game against Lancashire.

Adams

Dawson

Lumb (he arrives back today)

McKenzie

Vince

Pothas

Mascarenhas

Cork

Ali

Briggs or Tomlinson or Griffiths

Jones

Time to throw caution to the wind. I am assuming Ervine is still injured having damaged his ankle in the warm up yesterday.

Dawson out with hamstring injury. 13 man squad here: http://www.rosebowlplc.com/news/hampshire-v-lancashire-lvcc-preview/
Forgot Dawson was injured. He went off yesterday limping slighty and was immediately on the treatment table.

That created quite a problem. Who is going to open with Adams? Howells lacks any experience at that level. Myburgh is a limited over opener but not so much at the longer game. Ervine has opened successfully before but he is also injured. Lumb is supposed to be back today but perhaps this game has come too soon.

I plump for Myburgh with Howells at 5

Surely it will be Howell? Just scored a century opening in one day cricket and has always been an opener in 2nd XI and age-group cricket.

I would go for:

Howell

Adams

Myburgh

McKenzie

Vince

Pothas

Mascarenhas

Cork

Ali

Briggs

Griffiths

May be tempted to go for Tomlinson instead of Ali or Griffiths. I don't see the point of Jones even being considered for the four day stuff to be honest.

oh and Surrey 311 off 40 overs, 2nd highest ever in 40 over competitions. Says it all really

I went to the game yesterday (pretty much on my doorstep so would have been rude not to!), and it was a 300 wicket, to be fair. We didn't bowl particularly badly, and it was a pretty flat track with a fast outfield and short boundaries.

The game was lost in overs 10-20 of our innings. Howell was excellent, Myburgh and Vince doing what they seem to do more often than not by getting in and then getting out stupidly. Dawson looked in good touch before he got out as well. What doesn't help our cause is McKenzie coming in and taking 25 balls to score his first six runs at a time when we had a fair bit of momentum. Sometimes he needs to remember he's not batting for a day to save a test match at Lord's...

I was there as well Steve. Agree with your comments. Also just think McKenzie is out of form at present.

...

fair point, but it was more to emphasise my disappointment in how the season has gone so far.

that said if you look at last years results it was 12 games before we won! So we're ahead of the game so far lol

Couldnt hack it any more and left at tea.

Despite the best laid plans of the "think-tank" the wicket is still doing as much today as it was yesterday. The difference is that whilst Brown held it together for Lancs, despite being beaten by Griffiths every over, we havent got anyone in any sort of form to dig us out of the mess. Jimmy Adams was out chasing a wide. Myburgh shouldered arms and was bowled middle and off. Cork LBW 3rd ball and was probably out the ball before. The rest hang their bats out for catching practise.

Another blow was the partnership of Hogg and Mahmood yesterday that took them over 300. Lancs got a 100 too many for that pitch.

One ray of sunshine. Carberry netting both days. Cant get him, Lumby and Tahir back soon enough.

Also learnt yesterday that the Test has sold so poorly that no temporary seating will be installed. Pi ss poor effort from so-called cricket fans in this area.

TBF none of the days in the First Cardiff Test have sold out and it doesnt look like they have put temporary seating in either......I'm not sure Sri Lanka is such a draw to fair weather cricket fans as say the Aussies or India and it could be considered an expensive day out when theres a recession on.

dear, oh dear, oh dear - we are in a real relegation struggle already.

there won't be any struggling, we'll get relegated with Worcs. Our bowling is too poor

to have any doubts about it. Once again we had Lancs on the hook at about 180/5 or something like that, they put on another 150 or so whereas we would have caved in from a similar situation (and so we did ...twice).Unless we can get a bowler in who can finish off the

sevens, eights and nines without being hoicked for a hundred runs, it's all over for Hants this season.

I am closer to the dressing room than most on here and I have not heard he has lost the dressing room!

Worrying times at present with so many players out of form. Cork is trying to lead from the front and quite honestly, taking into account his experience, there is no one better in the squad.

Adams has played throughout the winter and maybe his form is suffering a little but he is still the best opener and fielder we have at present. Took a stunning catch on Tuesday

Dawson has been one of the few in form and his injury has not helped our cause. However I see him more in the role of a number 5 rather than opening

Too early to say much about Howells. So far he has looked the nervous but a hard worked half century with some good shots will be just what the doctor ordered.

Carberry is still not fit and due further scans at the end of June. I feel he is preparing for the worse. The decision will be his but could be retirement from the game. He is keeping an open mind at present and still netting regularly

Lumb has arrived back from India (what a waste of time that was apart from the money he earned!) but has a long standing back niggle. Lancashire came too early for him

Myburgh is a decent little player but as a Kolpach he has to be a star player, which he is not.

Mckenzie has come back totally out of form. He has class and I am sure he will come good.

Vince is frustrating. He clearly has class and ability. He is in form but must learn to graft out a few big innings. That means knowing which balls to leave.

Ervine has yet to show any real form but his injury was a blow. Out for at least two weeks the powerful mid order batting will be missed at the start of the T20

Pothas is another one totally out of form with the bat. With Bates being the better keeper he had better look over his shoulder. He is only in because of his batting in my opinion

Mascarenhas is just coming back from a year long injury and looks totally out of from with bat and ball.

Tahir is back. Could not play against Lancashire due to a request from SA cricket board but should be playing now for the rest of the season. Let's hope his match winning spin bowling continues where it left off. It will be a big lift for the team.

Ali is also just coming back after a long injury. He was very unlucky on the first morning and deserved more.

Jones is not suffering from his past injury but at present the club are taking it carefully. He is keen to play more but I am not sure he will be able to take on 25 overs plus a day so that will put more pressure on the other bowlers.

Griffiths is quick and taking wickets. A bit expensive at times but he deserves his place

Briggs has done nothing wrong with the ball but with Tahir back, hopefully he will be given a rest. I am sure Briggs is a future England spinner.

Tomlinson's injury has kept him out for a while but he is fit now and it was a toss up if he played against Lancashire. On that green wicket I would have picked him but who do you drop!!

De Wet is another out of form and is no better that our other bowlers waiting a chance. As a Kolpac he should be a star. Poor signing in my opinion but perhaps he was looked at as cover for Jones & Ali.

Wood looked the best bowler at Surrey on Sunday. I am sure he will start in the T20 and cannot be far away from a 4 day match for the first team

Balcombe is another usful palyer that just starts to look the part in the seconds and then gets a slight injury again. Think he is fit now but others are ahead of him at present.

Bates is, in my opinion, looking like he will be the best wicket keeper in England but he lacks the batting which, when he plays, leaves an unbalanced side.

T20 has come at the right time. Will give the club a chance to look at that is going wrong and providing we can get a couple of wins on return to 4 day cricket I see us ending the season mid table.

Decent summary Weston Saint. I agree about Pothas but with the batting so weak at the moment, bringing in Bates would be too much of a risk. Bilal Shafayat has been playing for the 2nds and scoring runs, he's a part-time keeper as well so may be a short term solution?

The major problem we have is all the injury doubts we have over the bowlers. Cork is pretty much the only one that hasn't been affected by a serious injury in the last year or so and even he's had a few niggles. Bit early to say about Dimi's form with the ball. He had good figures in his first one day game back. His batting has looked a little nervous though.

Bilal Shafayat is on trial but I do not know if he is registered to play Championship cricket although he was released last year. Will try to find out next week at the game. If he comes in it will be as a batsman though not as part wicket keeper. Has to be Pothas or Bates.

The main problem appears to be Myburgh, McKenzie and Pothas who are supposed to provide experience and solidity to the middle order but all of whom appear woefully out of form.

The T20 might be just what the batsmen need (particularly McKenzie and Pothas), the pressure will be off and they might have the freedom to play some shots and hopefully find some form.
