keithd Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 We've approached Jamie Foster of Essex... if there was one person who'd be an ideal mentor for Michael Bates... uncertain about this. i think Bates is a fantastic player. Now! Already a man worth his place. I guess the boys in charge know what they are doing, and hope Bates doesnt get despondant over it.

I absolutely agree... at 20, his wicketkeeping is already first-class but I'm sure there is more he can learn, I guess. I've still not seen him bat for any length of time though... I've still not seen him bat for any length of time though... Neither has anybody else - and that's the problem. In the post-Gilchrist era stumpers must be worth their place with the bat. Sad but true. Bates is a brilliant young wicket keeper - as seen yesterday standing up to Briggs - but for the team to be balanced we can't afford a passenger with the bat. The man that Bates or Foster will be replacing was just about the best wicket-keeper batsman in county cricket over the last ten years
washsaint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 TBH, this sums up absolutely everything that is wrong with Hampshire right now. Bates appears to have improved a lot with the bat this year and, from what friends and family are saying, is already a top notch wicketkeeper. Yet Hampshire want to go and bring in yet another 'star' player who has underachieved and is no better than what we already have. Kabir Ali, de Wet, Simon Jones, etc - all collossal wates of money. This Charming Man Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 I absolutely agree... at 20, his wicketkeeping is already first-class but I'm sure there is more he can learn, I guess. I've still not seen him bat for any length of time though... A mate of mine has played against him numerous times and he say's that whilst his keeping skill are right up there, he's not that good with a bat in his hand. The modern wicketkeeper has to be able to bat. Let's hope it's something he can improve over time. Someone like Foster filling in for a few years until he's ready sounds ideal in my eyes. He's ok..but lets be honest he's done nish in the championship and we've reached two 20/20 final days without him. He seems more interested in picking up a cheque for ipl than play for us (can't blame him) , get him off the wage bill.

Berkshire Saint Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Pretty average FC record for us for someone who's probably pretty highly paid. One of those 4 FC 100s was a double hundred against a University side so that inflates his stats there a bit. Good one day player though but I'm not too fussed about him leaving. wadesmith Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Yeah agree a top 5 player in a division 1 club an average of 36.54 is absolute bare minimum you would expect A hundred every 13 games is frankly below average. Standard county player, occasionly brilliant one day player ( i saw that 100 against Essex, pretty amazing) couple this witj the fact he is constantly injured or playing Ipl and I think he's worth getting off the wage bill, and getting a younger player in. corsacar saint Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Lancashire put the career of Gareth Cross back 4 years by signing Luke Sutton,if we put the career of Bates back by 3 years then that is sacrilege. Weston Saint Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Not when it is down to DL where a match is rained off whilst the side batting second are still chasing a total previously set. That is my understanding
keithd Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Ah, i think i get it. If we'd knocked the required runs off within the 23 overs it was reduced to we'd have won by x wickets. As we were ahead of the D/L par score at the time the rain came and subsequently ended the game we won by the number of runs ahead. I get it now. cool

corsacar saint Posted 20 August, 2011 Share Posted 20 August, 2011 Fantastic win,if we can beat Worcesterhire, maybe, just maybe the impossible may happen. Surely beating the leaders and a very well placed team in the last two county games, certainly has done loads for the teams confidence. I would be more than delighted to be proved wrong, because we were all but down a couple of weeks ago.
