Saint Charlie Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 Thought maybe having a constant thread rather than different match ones might be a good idea. Frustrating start so far - injuries, poor form, dreadful catching.... On the plus side Briggs has come in and done well, Griffiths bowled well last time out but the batting seems so fragile. Sounds like Carberry will be out for a while, sooner Tahir is around the better - can see both spinners playing a lot.

Window Cleaner Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Hants 2011?? Colour me dubious. Bowling too weak, batting too erratic. We'll be lucky to avoid relegation again.
Berkshire Saint Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Yeah happy to avoid relegation again I reckon. Hopefully do well in the 40 over and T20 though. We get all the usual propaganda every year about this year we'll challenge for the title etc etc. Problem is most of our potential 'Best XI' are usually injured. Window Cleaner Posted 24 April, 2011 Share Posted 24 April, 2011 (edited) Good start from Jones for our bowling as well... Looking promising for today at least. Not so much now, bowling now getting slammed and Warks might just win this unless we get another wicket soon. This bowling attack will be the end of us. NB got the wicket now 198/6 with about 8 overs to go. As they've been averaging over 10 an over since about the 24 th over it's probably not finished yet. Window Cleaner Posted 24 April, 2011 Share Posted 24 April, 2011 240 / 8 35 needed from 19 Good job Danny Briggs has managed to winkle a couple out because the seamers were getting tonked. ecuk268 Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Good game yesterday at a beautifully warm and sunny Rosebowl. I thought that we were in line for about 220 but McKenzie's knock in the last few overs gave us a good total. We started off well in the field with Jones bowling fast and accurate, Cork getting a wicket with his first ball and with a few early wickets I thought that we had it in the bag, but we let them back in with some sloppy fielding ( 3 dropped catches) and they needed 10 from the last 2 balls with Cork bowling. The first went for a 6 but they couldn't manage a 4 for the second so we scraped home. Not a bad performance against last years winners. Hopefully the fielding was down to early season rustiness, if we tighten up on that we should be a decent side.
Weston Saint Posted 25 April, 2011 Share Posted 25 April, 2011 Spoke to Nic Pothas, he should be back for Wednesday's game. I also had a chat with Jones wife. She says he gets very little reaction to his original injury. Swelled up a little in Barbados but more due to the heat. Little niggle from time to time but no more than expected after a career threatening injury. No sign of Carberry. Dimi was around and looking to be close to returning (probably for T20) Kabir Ali also about and looks close.

Football on Saturday and Monday and a 550 run,80 over thriller at the Rosebowl on Sunday. This is the quintessence of Easter and one of the few things you really miss when you're a long time expat. SO5 4BW Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 What are people's thoughts ahead of the Somerset game? - I think it may be a bad time to play them - they're too good to lose three on the bounce. Window Cleaner Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Just hoping for some solid first innings batting from Hants ,330/350 should put Somerset under a bit of pressure,7/0 at the moment. Window Cleaner Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Another miserable batting display by the middle order, McKenzie should probably go in at 3 because Myburgh is just going to try and hoick everything over either midwicket or the pavillion and it's a free wicket for the opposition. Somerset will now score about 400 and we'll be in the crapper again.

Window Cleaner Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 So then as Somerset move inexorably towards 400 one must ask the question: What other bowling options do we have? have we someone in reserve or is it time to go on a recruiting drive, because with what we seem to have we'll be relegated before the mid point of the season. Berkshire Saint Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 Jones was 12th man for this game but I've given up on him for Championship cricket. Useful enough to have for one-dayers though. Chris Wood did ok in the few Championship games he had last year and so did Balcombe. Riazzuddin mainly plays one day cricket but is apparently injured at the moment. And then there's Ali who played in the Uni game last week but is probably still a little way off being risked in a Championship game. No idea what the Mascarenhas situation is at the moment but think we can write him off for four cricket for this season. Looks a real shambles at the moment with all of the injured players and only Adams and Dawson making any contributions with the bat. Cork's bowling form is particuarly worrying as well. Weston Saint Posted 28 April, 2011 Share Posted 28 April, 2011 Just an update Geoff Miller, Chairman of Selectors, met with Michael Carberry this morning for a chat. Good to see he is keeping in touch I spoke to Carberry after. He still has problems and does not see any chance of a start before July at the earliest. I will not go into details I spoke to Dimi. He is getting there. I asked if he would be back for T20 as previously suggested. He said yes and likely before then. Kabir Ali is playing for the seconds but there is still some doubt about his recovery! Won't say more at this stage. Jones is still fit.

Window Cleaner Posted 3 May, 2011 Share Posted 3 May, 2011 Lamentable again yesterday, when I first saw Hant's score i thought it was a rain affected game, didn't cotton on that we had been bowled out in just 30 overs. Got them at 47/5 and then the same old bowling misery let them off the hook. Absolutely no hope for Hants this season on my part.Shan't feel let down that way. Minty Posted 3 May, 2011 Share Posted 3 May, 2011 I'm struggling to justify any of it... and I don't mean 'make excuses' for them, but come up with any reasons as to why we have been so poor so far? Is it our pre-season preparation, poor leadership/captaincy, individuals (most of them!) simply not playing to their standard...? I've seen some poor starts over the years but this one (especially the manner of it) already makes it feel like the worst as long as I can remember...! I've seen some poor starts over the years but this one (especially the manner of it) already makes it feel like the worst as long as I can remember...! probably something to do with the jolly in the West Indies this winter, this is about the difference between 1 day and 4 day cricket.Apart from the openers and perhaps McKenzie the batsmen haven't tuned into steady scoring to build a total, the bowlers on the other hand are just useless apart from Briggs and sooner or later he'll get smashed for 100+ from 20 overs or so.Bowling has been a problem since Warne left, we can restrict scores in limited over games but we can't bowl sides out.The fact that Somerset took 50 odd runs from 20 odd no balls just defies all explanation except that we can't bowl properly. If I remember rightly though we were within sight of a couple of victories but either rain or some stubborn batting from the last pair denied us.This season we just seem abysmally bad in a couple of sectors.
