SaintAmongSkates Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 Sorry if already discussed but what are people's thoughts that Brighton might not give 100% on Saturday given that they secured the league title today. Could we benefit from this as the first game post winning, or will they want to put on a show a home?
south Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 They'll want to beat us to prove a point. Do they have any more to prove ?
Bailey Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 They'll want to beat us to prove a point. And to maintain their unbeaten home record. Brighton have really grown a strong dislike for Saints and in particular Adkins. Apparently a big banner is being made to taunt the latter. Could be an interesting game!
aintforever Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 It's a tough one, as much as celebrating all week and trying out their kids may work to our advantage, they will be playing with confidence and without pressure which wont help us. If we play like we did today they will beat us regardless anyway.
JackFrost Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 They've already stated they are targeting 100+ points this season so I can't see there being any let up. We need a performance against them, if we get anything out of the game it will be a result
latter day saint Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 And to maintain their unbeaten home record. Brighton have really grown a strong dislike for Saints and in particular Adkins. Apparently a big banner is being made to taunt the latter. Could be an interesting game! is that a joke about the banner? seriously !?
Griffo Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 Do they have any more to prove ? I think you mean 'we' Yes, they'd love to beat us, if you look on North Stand Chat, they are a bunch of bitter ******s. There's well over 5 threads on their homepage about us. I think a bit of "We are Southampton, we don't care about you." may be in order for Saturday.
Bailey Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 is that a joke about the banner? seriously !? Nope! Making a banner in reference to the 'if they can keep up with us' comment Adkins made about Brighton's promotion chances a few months back.
Doctoroncall Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 Ive heard they may well start to blood the other squad members and possible academy players if they achieve first place. Besides the players may well think it's all over and so not give 100 percent mentally if not physically.
latter day saint Posted 16 April, 2011 Posted 16 April, 2011 Nope! Making a banner in reference to the 'if they can keep up with us' comment Adkins made about Brighton's promotion chances a few months back. as Crablungs would say " ROLFCOPTERS!" they win the league & they decide to make a banner about our manager making a throw away comment in jest, rather than celebrate their win they are so small time.
Micky Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 If anything they will have their foot firmly on the gas, there will be no let up - they will want to do us given the little bit of needle that has gone on. Unfortunately, I think they probably will too.
Rut Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Of course they will be giving it plenty. What do you expect them to do - wish us good luck? At this stage at the season you can make a case for good/bad things against any team you play (they need points to go up/down, have nothing to play for etc). Saints to win 3-1. Going up, up, up!
ant Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 If the fixture had been during our unbeaten run I'd have been more likely to back us to nick in and take the three points, but recent performances have looked uninspired and (dare I say it) weary. Personally I think we should have sneaked the win in the fixture at St. Mary's, but they're an intelligent and disciplined side that could well pick us off. Anything other than a loss would be a bonus in my eyes as I don't think there's any question of them taking their foot off the gas.
Capel Saint Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Have to agree that I don't think Brighton will let up and will want to beat Saints as a statement of intent that they fear no-one which is what Poyet has instilled into Brighton. I would love them to have got complacent especially now that they are confirmed Champions but alas we will be very lucky to get a draw.
thorpie the sinner Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 As I said before, fair play to Brighton, fantastic achievement! However, at the business end of the season, I still think we can go there and get three points. We haven't played well for a while, next sat would be a great place to start again! saints 3-2
Deppo Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 I honestly think they'll **** us. Don't be homophobic, Junction 9
saint-paul Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 They do still have an unbeaten home record to keep this season, and i doubt they'd be impressed losing it to us, their apparent local rivals. lolz.
dune Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Definite advantage for us. Their players will have been getting hammered.
FarehamRed Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Question is: should our players from a guard of honour when Brighton run on to the pitch? Would be the decent thing to do, I think.
Stu Man Do Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Seeing as how they didn't get the trophy yesterday will they be presented with it next weekend or is this always held over till the end of the year? I can't imagine they will "go easy" on us next week and will no doubt want to lord it over a "big club" at their ground. Can't see how them having won the league with games to spare will help us next weekend :-(
Um Bongo Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 They will want to beat us and will play as strong a team as they can. To think otherwise is just silly.
Secret Site Agent Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 They will play for pride, to set a decent run and with the passion that comes from being labled 'The Best'. What would we do if the roles were reversed? What would we be screaming now, let's rip them up and score **** loads, or give the kids a run out and if we loes it doesn't matter. The solution is to get them on the back foot. Form a guard of honour before the game, give them a round of applause, congratulate them. Play for a draw in the first half by playing a spoiling game. Then suddenly in the second half go all out from Kick off for a win. hit them hard on the bounce and see if we can score a few before they reorganise. Then close them down and play an ultra defensive game. They know how we play, like most are getting to know our strengths and weeknesses, so it's back to a plan B or C.
Wade Garrett Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 I couldn't give two f*cks whether they wheel out their best team or not. They're not exactly Man Utd, and struggled to beat Dagenham and Swindon recently. If we play well there's no reason why we can't turn them over.
Saints foreva Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 I don't think it's a blessing. Personally I think they will be desperate to beat us after Adkins comments about them after the home fixture. My worry is that they will play the kids vs Huddersfield or go soft on them allowing them to pick up three points.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Brighton will play with the aim to win, that is what all football teams try to do, pointless thread.
explorer saint Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Question is: should our players from a guard of honour when Brighton run on to the pitch? Would be the decent thing to do, I think. Er NO
Cabrone Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 Forget about Brighton, let's just concentrate on our own performance. If Adam is back and we play to our full potential then I fancy at least a draw and quite possibly a win. It's just another 3 points up for grabs as far as I'm concerned.
Trader Posted 17 April, 2011 Posted 17 April, 2011 They will not let up against Saints or anyone else, nor should we expect them to. It's professional football. If the situation were reversed would you expect us to give any less than 100%?

If the situation were reversed would you expect us to give any less than 100%? The only time I can remember it happen was when those dirty skate bastards laid down for WBA when we went down.

Your not man utd either and you havent struggled to beat teams this season, bit of a struggle saturday what i heard. And if we play well cant see you getting anything from it.

hackedoff Posted 18 April, 2011 Posted 18 April, 2011 Your not man utd either and you havent struggled to beat teams this season, bit of a struggle saturday what i heard. And if we play well cant see you getting anything from it. As long as you put as much effort into the Huddersfield game as well, no one will argue.
Seagull Posted 18 April, 2011 Posted 18 April, 2011 As long as you put as much effort into the Huddersfield game as well, no one will argue. The trophy presentation will be after the game so they won't want to lift the trophy after a poor performance. Additionally, if you don't beat us, we'll certainly want to protect the unbeaten home record in the last game. Gus has targeted 100 points but he's also said he's going to give some fringe players a chance once the title was won. I expect we'll see a few changes in the next few games. Brezovan may get a chance in goal, Alan Navarro will probably get a start or two (he was 1st choice until a serious injury early in the season and only just back) and we may see Chris Holroyd feature too.
Nexstar Posted 18 April, 2011 Posted 18 April, 2011 Your not man utd either and you havent struggled to beat teams this season, bit of a struggle saturday what i heard. And if we play well cant see you getting anything from it. It's difficult against any team that parks the bus, but 23 shots on goal isn't a massive struggle. If we play well I can't see you getting anything from the game either.
Big Bad Bob Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 Apparently a big banner is being made to taunt the latter. Will need to be big for anyone on the pitch to see it........
Sambib Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 Ive heard they may well start to blood the other squad members and possible academy players if they achieve first place. Besides the players may well think it's all over and so not give 100 percent mentally if not physically. I would love to see us do this! We haven't seen much of Dunk this season, but his two performances have been excellent (Away at Tranmere and at your place) Jake Forster-Caskey is the player we all want to see, but we have been restricted to a very good performance away at Stoke in the FA Cup. Torbjorn Agdestein is the other youngster we want to see. He is banging them in for the reserves, so we want to see how he could do in the first team. Don't be surprised if you see one, two or three in the match squad (Definitely Dunk, as Greer is suspended - silly headbutt was silly) but I think we'll start with our strongest team, as there is a bit of anti-Saints feeling amongst the squad (Well, more anti-Adkins than Saints)
OldNick Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 Adkins mind games did not work, and now it will be used by brighton to wind them up to play hard against us. Our squad has the chance to prove NA right and so should play well to beat them. Personally Id take a point now. perhaps we should spend the majority of the gtame wasting time , much like they did when they came here. They were petrified to go over the halfway line that night.
Foxstone Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 One thing for certain is that Brighton are not going to park the bus on Saturday, so it will be an open game. Far better we have one of those rather than trying to break down a 10 man defence.
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 Their defence has wobbled a bit lately, probably lack of concentration. Add a bit of narkiness on top, and given our injury woes its looking like the kind of game where there's a bit of a surprise. As we've looked a bit nervy lately, it being Brighton may relax us psychologically as well. I think Connolly may score and we'll come up with a win.
bender Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 I'll tell you what is a blessing. Posh & Huds playing on Friday and us on Saturday. If results go against us, we'll have a massive sense of urgency against Brighton. If results go our way on Friday, Saturday will be seen as a massive opportunity - we win and Hudders lose, then all we need to do is win our home games.
Clapham Saint Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 I work with a Brighton fan. He is foaming at the mouth at the thought of being able to get one over on Adkins after his "we're every other team in the league's cup final" (or something very similar) comment. Even metioning the game gets him started on a 20 minute rant about how they're going to "ram it down his throat". They're also looking to reach a record points total. The fans are definately up for it. I doubt the players will be any different.
yorkie Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 Strange how the game creates such division amongst the fans...and as far as the players go it's just another game. As for being professional I can't believe that Saints will not be out playing for the win. The Brighton players will have one eye on trying to get one over on us - however I think that will make them exposed at the back. The game plan will be to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Our passing needs to be spot on - and we must not let them have the run of the ball. As far as the fans go - it is really a joke that the place can generate any atmosphere at all. Hopefully both Managers will deliver a speech of their careers and the fans will be in for a treat. The only thing that can spoil it will be the officials! The results on Friday night will determine if the pressure gets to Saints - and how they line up. I think if Huddersfield win it might be better for us as we will go out knowing we HAVE to win. I can't understand all this business about the game in hand - let's just win the points and worry about the game in hand when it happens. Anyway for the last time from me - well done Brighton - but that home record is waiting to be broken, and we could just be the team to undo the lock!
hamster Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 I must say, whatever your prediction, the odds are very tantalising. I'm going for the 13/8 Saints win.

Clapham Saint Posted 19 April, 2011 Posted 19 April, 2011 Seeing as this guy is "foaming at the mouth" at the prospect of saturdays game, I'd say Adkins was spot on with his comment. Quite so. However if I point this out his brain will probably melt and so I just stear clear.
saint lard Posted 20 April, 2011 Posted 20 April, 2011 Forget about Brighton, let's just concentrate on our own performance. We have'nt done this for an age,and when we did it was extremely sporadic.
keithd Posted 20 April, 2011 Posted 20 April, 2011 if we play to our best and they play to their best the best team will probably win. i expect.
Give it to Ron Posted 20 April, 2011 Posted 20 April, 2011 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/8984296.Poyet_taunts_Saints_ahead_of_Withdean_clash/?ref=twt Can someone point out where the taunts are in this piece....everything he says is true.
