Brighton build-up

To be fair I think Palace vs Brighton is a pretty big derby game. From knowing supporters of both clubs it seems they do really hate each other.

A Palace view on their rivals:

http://www.holmesdale.net/page.php?id=82&story=4152

Rivalries are quite fascinating and they has been a number of surveys done on the subject. Brighton v Palace came number 10 (in the entire country) in one undertaken by Littlewoods.

They are not reciprocated. For instance in another survey Arsenal Fans consider Manchester United to be their main rival, whilst Spurs fans still hate the Gunners.

Palace Fans (of an older generation) consider Brighton to be their main rival, whilst younger ones would consider Charlton.

Charlton fans however dislike Millwall the most, whilst Millwall fans would vote West Ham and Millwall would agree.

Liverpool appear to have moved onto Man United, whilst Everton still hate their neighbours over the other side of Stanley Park.

Personally, in terms or pure vitriol - the worst is the Sheffield Derby - which I know is odd considering they share a city.

I'd put Southampton / Pompey second, closely followed by Watford v Luton !

Coming a close 4th - Burnley / Blackburn. Off most people's radar but the fans absolutely despise each other.

The because of "a recent circumstance" are interesting too, especially when your main rival is playing in another league. Brighton Fans obviously love beating Gillingham and Leyton Orient (who voted Southend) v West Ham is obviously going to take on a whole new dimension if Barry Hearn wins his court case...

I think you find even the younger Palace fans hate us more...We are very much public enemy no.1 in all of Palace fans eyes. They do not bother with Charlton as they just see them as a silly, happy-clappy, nice club and there is no point hating Millwall as they are too busy with West Ham!

I have never really understood this who has the biggest rivalry rubbish either as each derby is equally as important to every set of fans...I mean no seems to mention Plymouth-Exeter in a list of big rivalries but I bet to both groups of supporters it is as intense as any other...The same could be said of Mansfield-Chesterfield and so on, so on...

But back to the Albion-Palace, it is not so much a rivalry, just a more deep-seated hatred...

Saw that report too (wasn't it on one of our threads here?). Also think Forest v Derby is a big one - they also hate each other. Used to have a Palace lodger and she absolutely hated Brighton, she did tell me the reason once but I forget now. Its a definite rivalry though and I would call it a proper Derby, way down on the list but the majority do seem to hate each other. Its a bit like Bompey v Poole. :-)

Your rivalry with Palace is not as cut and dried as you think.

Brighton have cheated all season by using the ballboys to speed up and slow down play when it suits them, using theatricals to get opposition players booked and diving for penalties. Not my opinion, Nigel Adkins (see the OS piece). Seems blue shirts and the south coast just have that corrupting influence. A win for us would be a win for playing the game the right way.

following some concerns about what could go wrong in the next few days I've cheered up a bit.

We have had a week of recovery, Lallana will be back, as confirmed champions their play will be less intense than they want or realise - we can get a result there.

If Huddersfield slip up today as well then all is well again.

Onwards and upwards.

A couple of my mates are members of 'HF' and one hates Charlton the most, with the other hating Millwall the most...

They will be in the minority. I can understand the Millwall one as they are definitely disliked but most of the Lions direct their hatred to West Ham...As for Charlton that is a strange one as I just thought they took no notice of them. Charlton really despise Palace but Palace do not care about and spend their time hating us.

As we are on the subject of rivalries, what would you lot have done for a rival had Pompey gone bust?...Other than hating the re-formed club that probably would have been created...

The clubs infrastructure and finances are there now to support 2nd tier or higher football, with or without Poyet.

Dear Mr Cheeseroll, like a great big seagull I'm going to sh1t on your parade. Didn't you once have a ground that held 36,000 people and didn't you spend 95% of your existence playing at said ground in the lower tiers of English football ? My point being that a super duper all singing and dancing ground on its' own does not guarantee top flight football. Your infrastructure does not include a proper training ground either, you still train at Sussex Uni playing fields I believe. And don't tell me you are looking for suitable premises - where the hell in Sussex do you think a large enough green field site exists where you will get planning permission for this especially now the city is all but surrounded by the South Downs National Park where you won't even get planning for a toilet block now ?

Lastly, can you please tell us all what will happen when your sugar daddy, the well known gambler Mr Bloom, puts it all on red - and it comes up black ?

Thank you kindly. :uhoh:

No idea, I actually didn't want them to go bust because we'd all definitely miss them.

It's a standard practice in football.

I remember when my local team was playing Monaco in the Cup. We told the U13s to speed up the ball return if we were losing and to slow it down if we were winning. We put the fattest slowest kid (reserve team goalie for the U13s) in the area behind their goal where there was a big space before the fence. When we were 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go the lads just kept punting the ball into that area and we must have gained 2 or 3 minutes like that.

We would hate Southend because they came down to St Mary's on the last game of the season a couple of years back and made fun of us by dressing in fancy dress and having some sort of party in our own back yard, they made us look like mugs. I still can't watch sponge bob square pants now without the feeling of shame.

Poyet's attempt at mind games

They really do seem to think that because their highest position for a decade coincides with our lowest position for half a century to leave them ONE (yes, one) place above us, we should be bowing down to them and accepting them as superior...

It really is laughable, it'd be like Man City trying to claim they're now bigger than Man Utd because they beat them in the FA Cup semi final...

Come back when we've spent more than 0.8% of our history below you and you might have earned some grudging respect...

Y'know what - I couldn't care less about the result of tomorrow's game as long as we're promoted. Full stop. League 1 is utterly meaningless to a club of Southampton's size apart from as a necessary obstacle to achieve promotion into the Championship and subsequently the top flight.

You think Norwich give a damn about the fact they won League 1 last year in relation to the fact they raped Ipswich last night?

You think Leeds are crying to themselves about the fact they only came second last year in relation to their chase for a play-off spot this season?

You think Forest even bother to remember the League 1 swamp that they had to wade through to achieve promotion to the Championship and target promotion once again?

Of course not.

Southampton as a city regards this league as little more than an irksome little chore to be done before the real job of getting out of the Championship begins. Tomorrow is NOT a derby. Its not even a more important game that Hartlepool at home or Brentford away. It is yet another complete nothing of a football match which we will be trying to win to bolster our own points total and nothing else. A victory tomorrow will not even be cause for any celebration but a satisfied fist pump before the journey home. A defeat will mean little more than an indifferent shrug before we crush our remaining four fixtures.

Southampton are bigger than this league.

Southampton are bigger than Brighton.

F*ck. Had Huddersfield down to draw at MK... We have to get something from Brighton now, Huddersfield are seemingly unstoppable. Haven't lost since we beat em 4-1. That sort of "undefeatable" mentality will sure help them and I wouldn't be surprised to see them win their next 3 games.

Have to win 4 out of our upcoming games now. Or playoffs.

IMO

The unbeaten record of theirs is good, but they have drawn an awful lot of them. They will drop points somewhere, i'm sure of it.

Guards of honour mentioned between two clubs (not for individuals, or kids mascot-style line-ups) in the first 13 pages of a Google "football guard of honour" search are as follows :

Lyme Regis v South Petherton 2010 : http://www.viewfrompublishing.co.uk/news_view/5061/5/1/lyme-regis-football-defeat-but-a-proud-day

A rather remote and parochial match you feature there, as is the report.

Amongst the recipients of the winners medals were Mark and Steven Batey grandsons of Kath Wellman a club life-member who has run the tea-hut at the Davey Fort for more than 30-years.

With cross reference to a thread in The Lounge about The Royal Wedding, I do hope Kath Wellman has received an invitation for her local community services.

I will be at the game tomorrow as I also have a ticket and I may have a pre match drink depending on what time we arrive as I'm getting a lift there n back!

Am also looking forward to this and hopefully it should be a Good game and that fingers crossed that we can move back into 2nd come 5pm after getting the 3 points and by catching Brighton on an off day but we'l see!

As a Saints fan I really hope that we do pull it off and win but Tbh I can probably see a 2-1 Brighton win or I'd take a 1-0/1-1 and would also like to wish both teams Good Luck too!

Just out of curiousity I take it that we've sold all our tickets for the game yeh :p!?!

Thanks!

COYR :D!!

We will get beat 3-0 today. Lambert will be ****e as ever and Davis will let in a goal

At his near post. We will be crap in midfield with Hammond an Stephens only passing sideways and giving the ball away.

Business as usual then. Merry Christmas. Roll on the playoffs

Could you be any more negative? I don't understand what pleasure people like you get from 'supporting' a football team.

Nothing. We hate Pompey. Pompey would be no more and we would just concentrate on that weeks opponents. Plenty of teams don't have a deadly derby rival (Bournemouth spring to mind for some reason...) and we would be just fine.

Losing at Brighton will not end the world. (That happens next year according to Hollywood)

It will make life much tougher but our future will still be in our hands and will cause even more strain pain and woe

I'd love us to win, don't get me wrong, I just can't see it happening. They haven't lost at home all season, and aren't going to roll over lightly for us today just because they have nothing left to play for. Saints still don't fill me with confidence when playing away from home, It's like we are a different team (Wallsall, Rochdale etc) and today will be no different. I still don't think Adkins knows how to play us away from home.

A note worthy of some mention is that i came back from Brighton by train yesterday and due to disruption caused by railway line works all trains back to Southampton were being re routed and passengers had to change trains at.... Fratton ! The staff there were pondering the potential of having to deal with Skate , Swansea and Saints fans there all at the same time today. One of them seemed mightily relieved that his shift was finishing at 4. 45 pm while the others were considering whether or not they were getting paid enough to go to work today ! lol My comment to them was that all they needed was to have some Cardiff fans turn up and they would have the full house lol

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that Walsall defeat was NA's first away defeat since his first game in charge away at MK Franchise? Also, look at the stats... Ok, we lost, but we absolutely battered Walsall that night.

As for Rochdale, ok... We were shít then but bloody hell fella we can't win em' all!

I think this will be a heated game. A penalty or two and at least one sending off.

I'd expect NA to go bonkers with any of our players who gets sent off today. We have one of the best red card records in the division and a 3 match suspension is just something we don't need right now.
