Professor Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 If Saints don't win on Saturday they could be back to 3rd, so this has to be must win game like all the rest to May 7. Its going to be tough with a make-shift midfield but all the more credit to the team if they can do it. No one should count on Huddersfield dropping points and although its true Saints can afford one loss game it will be very difficult if they lose this week as that would leave them needing to win all the rest to be sure of second, or hoping for a Huddersfield slip. With Connolly in for Barnard and a solid back line, I expect The Albion to find Saints in a different class to some of their recent opponents and too good for them, even if Lallana is still out. beardy Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 Regarding the dvd game, are you talking about the 2-3 at our place last season? You might need to watch it again (or just check the scoreline), as I think you have built it up a little. I think you might need to check the scoreline actually mate. That's why it was a question... Yeah, right. Of course it was. It was 1-3.
jam Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 Yeah, right. Of course it was. It was 1-3. The clue was this little swiggly thing '?' that I put in my post. We use it to indicate when someone is asking a question. I'd got it mixed up with another game, Bristol Rovers I think. Tell you what, there's a clue there as to how important the Brighton game was to us last season. Can you work out the answer?

eelpie Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 Trouble is that if he field a weakened side against us Huddersfield and Peterborough will probably kick up a fuss. I somehow feel that he won't play a weakened side against us 'cos Brighton regard us as 'local' derby rivals and they have a point to rub in to demonstrate to the world their current (and well deserved) ascendency over 'once mighty' Saints. They know we have injuries and they'll be well up for it imo. More likely that they will field an experimental side against Udders. Our best hope is that Brighton under-estimate us. Griffo Posted 17 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 17 April, 2011 A few comments from their forum.. "I find it hard to hate Southampton because they're such a boring, nondescript club, from an unbelievably boring, nondescript city, playing - appropriately enough - in a dull bowl of a stadium. And they outstayed their welcome in the top flight for years, a bit like Coventry did." "They are the Coventry of the South." "First they decide that they are too big for the league they find themselves reduced to, then they add a particularly unpleasant brand of disrespect for everyone else being somehow inferior." "**** Southampton." "I want to see them bottle it, and beaten in the play offs." "I actually hated Southampton before Adkins came along. Pardew was an arrogant **** as well. The club attracts them." "There are reasons why we suggested drawing with Walsall and sorting out a fix for Huddersfield to put you in the mire of the play offs. We hate you, your arrogance and your physio. I would love nothing more than to see your two bit side stick around Div 3 for another season in order to learn some humility." Jealousy, anger and hatred of this ilk is very often down to an inferiority complex and being a no mark. If you are comfortable with who you are and have just achieved success, then you wouldn't have to resort to such attacks to try and fulfil an obvious pyschological gap in your psyche. Brighton have done very well this season and I think their true supporters who stuck by them in the very dark times have been deservedly rewarded with promotion and a decent stadium. Well done to them and I hope they enjoy the benefits of this success. However, for the other weirdos who seem to populate that board and who seem a bit obsessed, then my message would be kick back, enjoy your success, wallow in it, but ultimately you need to feel a little bit more secure about who you are and feel less of a need to big yourself up by putting others down. Otherwise you really do look like no marks.

S-Clarke Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 They have no real rivalry, so they are trying so desperately to create one. It's the same with Bournemouth as it also was with Reading. There is only one real rivalry on the South coast, all the others are pretty insignificant to us to be honest.

teamsaint Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 brighton Saints games used to have a fair back of edge around 1980...partly from our side because we never got to play poopey very often. All adds to the fun. No doubt there are a few internet warriors down there who have it in for us..they are the ones with the issues. The true albion fans who have stuck by their team through some lousy years deserve a better future...and to enjoy this season's success. If there are those at the withdean who couldn't figure that NA's comments were indeed somewhat tongue in cheek, and perhaps in hindsight al little misjudged, then that is their problem. He was in fact very quick to congratulate them on their promotion. Having NA as a hate figure does strike me as a little odd.He isn't really the best candidate around in my view !
Thimble Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 Pretty well summed up. I am led to believe that Albion-Saints games were pretty feisty back in the late 70's-early 80's which is mainly because we are both South Coast Clubs. But even at that time you were never our main rival...Not then, not now, not ever. Obviously, as I have said, you are a fellow South Coast Club, but that just makes you no different to Pompey or Bournemouth. Our main hate is Palace and I can never see that changing and there is a real chance we can resume hostilities next season. For the final games in the Championship last season Sheffield Wednesday were up against Palace for a relegation shoot-out and the thread on NSC had more pages than any thread about our own games that season! Unfortunately, we have a few saddo's who post on North Stand Chat who have nothing better to do than have a pop at Saints...The thing is, in the grand scheme of things it is a minority or people and probably no more than about 40-50. The sad thing is, mediums like the internet has given these ****-heads a platform to spout rubbish and because for some reason, lots of Southampton fans have registered on NSC this is all they see and form an unbalanced opinion based on the rubbish written there...And if anything these morons are not "obsessed" and trying to start some sort of new main rivalry, it has come about because we have been promotion/title rivals this season and I think you guys have got a little confused by this. Anyway, maybe it is all still silly as you have not really been promotion/title rivals for us...No one has...We have been without equal this season... As for Adkins, he knows he made a mistake with his "keep-up" comment and admitted as such to an ALBION director the other week. But I just think it is funny!...If he wants to be arrogant then I think that is great. I am quite arrogant myself and have no problems with it especially from a football manager...10 years ago we won what is now League 2 under Mickey Adams and he was always going on - If the opposition so much as got a draw against us he would proclaim how they raised their game as they were playing the top team! Just being cocky really...Brilliant stuff! I also cannot understand, what the "inferiority complex" we are supposed to have and if anything, it is a superiority complex! I mean, we have pretty much nothing to be inferior about! Saturday should be interesting and do expect Adkins and your fans to come in for some banter but that is football and should be encouraged...Hammond and Harding should get abuse because they deserve it! But then maybe we should just be smug at 2 ex-players who would not have a chance of getting into our current team. So, in summary, 99% of ALBION fans do not give a monkeys about Saints from a rivalry perspective in the same way you lot should be getting worked-up about a handful of numpties posting rubbish on an internet messageboard... You only have to look at the Congratulations thread to see how dignified, respectful and non rivalled up we are towards Brighton. The faux rivalry and vitriol aimed towards us seems a tad one way and makes them come across as somewhat small time, which is a shame as surely they should be enjoying their great season and the promising future they have ahead of them, rather than constantly having a pop at us. After their very dark times you would have thought they would be solely focussed what should be a great period for their Club. I know they have a bit of an issue towards Hammond & Harding, and Adkins words earlier in the season has obviously rubbed some up the wrong way, but the vitriol and rivalry from along the A27 seems to be pushing Bournemuff with regards cringeworthiness and small time.
