Golden Balls Posted 15 April, 2011 Share Posted 15 April, 2011 Not sure if any of you saw this in the Echo a while back but some of you on here may know him. Jay Young from Southampton was paralyzed recently while rehearsing a routine for a show. http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Pray-For-Jay/174403609276793 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/district/southampton/8948805.Stuntman_paralysed_in_Legoland_accident/ There is a fund raiser coming up in Totton soon http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=213788835313709

Panda Posted 15 April, 2011 Share Posted 15 April, 2011 Harsh. Raising funds is great, feeling sympathetic is good. Praying is redundant. In your life maybe.
hamster Posted 15 April, 2011 Share Posted 15 April, 2011 The non believers are in a minority. Pray if it's your thing but don't mock if itsnot, someone's prayer may give you the edge to overcome a problem one day. And contrary to popular belief it is not wrong to pray for yourself just as it is not wrong to love yourself. Don't want to find out you've been wrong all along when it's too late. Alternatively choose a faith that welcomes non believers when the time comes.

Matthew Le God Posted 16 April, 2011 Share Posted 16 April, 2011 (edited) Of course it is hard not to have sympathy for the lad. But an instruction/order to pray in the thread title? Really? Why won't God heal amputees that you pray for? Edited 16 April, 2011 by Matthew Le God
hamster Posted 16 April, 2011 Share Posted 16 April, 2011 Maybe praying for inner strength to face lifes challenges is the way. Maybe (a) god is inside us just waiting to be called upon?
Matthew Le God Posted 16 April, 2011 Share Posted 16 April, 2011 Maybe praying for inner strength to face lifes challenges is the way. Maybe (a) god is inside us just waiting to be called upon? I'm not entirely sure what you mean? Surely that isn't really praying then in the true definition of the word? Pray if it's your thing but don't mock if itsnot, someone's prayer may give you the edge to overcome a problem one day. I see no reason why a completely unsubstantiated practise that gives false hope can't be mocked. Many children around the world have died of curable conditions because their parents refused medical treatment that would have otherwise made their children better but instead decided to pray to "God". Hatch Posted 16 April, 2011 Share Posted 16 April, 2011 I see no reason why a completely unsubstantiated practise that gives false hope can't be mocked. It can, if the thread was titled 'what do you think about praying' But when it's specific to a certain person, most likely the OPs friend, then you shut the ***** up. hamster Posted 16 April, 2011 Share Posted 16 April, 2011 Don't pray for Jay then. I think the OP is asking not telling. Re people insisting on prayer and dismissing medicines, that's kinda my point. Were not immortal and perhaps some culture's acceptance of prevailing death yet asking for happiness in the afterlife is in a roundabout way asking for serenity. Many less 'developed' cultures appear far happier than our own, some might say. Their was an interesting thread about coping with bereavement the other week which wasvery much about those who are left behind and how nd why people 'cope'. I'd venture that those with faith cope very well as they are not tormented by eternally questioning 'Why?'
rallyboy Posted 16 April, 2011 Share Posted 16 April, 2011 putting the spiritual beliefs of individuals aside, how about we just give some thought to a guy who has suffered a horrendous accident, give him some moral support, and hope he can find the mental strength to adjust to what life has thrown at him. I'm sure he has the best wishes of many people of all different faiths.

Why won't God heal amputees that you pray for? I think you've completely misunderstood the point of the thread. The 'pray for Jay' title was because that is the name of the group on facebook set up by his friends that has attracted support from over 1000 people. I started the thread to bring the fund raiser to peoples attention. Especially those who may know his but haven't seen this sad news yet. Also to write good wishes if people feel like it. that's all, no need to get your knickers in a twist
