It's a travesty that the second best children's cardiac unit in the country is under threat of being closed!

Mods: It's on the OS so I assumed it was Saints related enough to be on the main forum, please move to the lounge if not.

Totally agree, it is ironic (or planned) that one of the hospitals competing with Southampton is Bristol, so please take the time out to sign the petition.

This is the crazy thing with the review Bristol, which finished 6 out of 11 in the quality review, is in all 4 options so will stay open no mater what. Southampton, which finished second and is rated the top unit outside of London, is only in 1 option out of 4!!

Mods, any chance this could be a sticky?

Not really any need, itll naturally keep near the top until the match.

Not read the review but I'd assume they're looking at geography rather than performance. Thanks for the post, I'll look out for the petition.

I'll definitely sign.

(It is appalling that the drive for nationally economy cuts is hitting those most in need of support.)

Especially as the drive for economy cuts is in the main the result of actions of those who need support least.

Yes unfortunately for Southampton the number one performing unit is in Oxford.

I will be signing this. If you wonder why this unfairness might be so take a look at this map. There again I am a cynic.

Having been a regular visitor to Soton Children's unit and GOSH over that last year I can def say that Soton rates above GOSH in my eyes.

The treatment of my daughter at Soton has been top notch.

It's been bad enough driving from Poole to Soton when she had one of her extended stays, to changed that to Bristol or Oxford would make it very hard..

This decision was being made well before last years general election, heard rumours of this at the beginning of last year...

There is going to be more and more of these tough decisions in the future as the debate on service delivery models continues between general hospitals and centres of excellance. Those making this decision will no doubt defend the accusation that this service review is about cuts as it is clinically believed that less bigger units will improve outcomes for more people. This means however that more people will be inconvenienced more often by having to travel longer differences but this should be weighed up against the improvement of outcomes.

Will would all like every type of service on our doorstep but this can not be the case for every community, so as a nation we have to decide what we want, more local services or better ones. Personally I think Southampton has a good chance of survival if the 7 unit model is prefered and that Leicester is the unit in jeopardy and no doubt the people in that area will be campaigning for their unit as well.

I only hope that the decison is made on clinical grounds only and that it will improve the lot for everyone and I wish all those children involved the best of luck.

Disgusting to be honest, placing a cost on care for the sick.

I agree fwiw, but it happens in every area of healthcare. NICE do it with every new drug that comes through for approval, ie balance the overall costs and benefits of that drug and either approve or reject it for NHS use. This is not a new idea, the last government used the same system.

I've already signed it, but I can't express enough what an excellent job this unit does. I'm 36 and had open heart surgery last year to fix a heart defect and have come though it the other side.

Although I'm 36 the operation was carried out by one of the best childrens heart surgeons in the country, do you think he will still be at Southampton General if we loose the childrens cardiac unit..No. This will not just affect the childrens surgery some of the best consulantants and surgeons we have at Southampton also operate on adults with congenital defects (i.e. have had them from birth).

Just another point regarding Bristol Heart Unit, when I was in 50% of the patients in my ward were from the Cornwall area. Although Bristol is geographically nearer to them they had all been sent to Southampton as it was the better unit.

"The public across the region and country are being urged to support the campaign to save children's heart surgery at Southampton General Hospital. This follows a long running national review of pediatric cardiac surgery recommending fewer, larger centres across England."

Has anyone got a link to a report of the aforementioned "national review of pediatric cardiac surgery"?

I'd be interested in reading more about the rationale behind this recommendation.

Although a tad late, has this been touted on the Gas fans website? As I would imagine that with cut backs Bristol Children with Heart conditions would more than likely be sent to Southampton, so regardless of shirt colours they should be encouraged to sign too.
