Markus Liebherr Tributes / Walsall Game Tribute

When I was about 10, my brother took me to the Charity Shield. It was Arsenal against Liverpool. I made my own flag. I drew a picture of Ian Rush on it. I used an old bedsheet. It took me all morning. I don't mind making this one, but I don't have any spare bedsheets. And I can only draw Ian Rush.

Right, several issues to resolve here:

Money

I estimated the width of one St Mary's block to be 15m, so asked for a quote based on 15x10m flag. Live Event Branding have quoted £2,764.50 ex VAT for a re-inforced flag with grab handles (I imagine quite important on a very large flag). 20x15m will be approx £5.5k.

Although I am sure we will be able to obtain cheaper quotes, an amount of this size will be very difficult to raise in the short amount of time we have available, so I would like to suggest that we approach the club about starting a 'Markus Liebherr memorial fund' into which the club could loan the cost of the flag to allow us to get moving, then we could fundraise, with any surplus going towards a fans memorial to be decided at a later date (I would like a memorial garden built and maintained by fans, like the one at Eastlands).

Having an account controlled by the club would resolve all of the issues with money security, and the fees involved with PayPal transfers!

Design

I don't think we need to rush into picking a design, to agree that it should have stripes, 'Forever a Saint' as text and that image of Markus is enough at this stage.

I am not particularly happy with no 1 design, mainly due to the issue raised above - when blown-up to full scale it will look terrible! That is the reason I have applied the 'Che Guevara' effect to the other designs - you will notice that most other flags with images use a similar effect, and I don't think it is a coincidence!

I will try and come up with something, but I think that type of image will always work best on a one-colour background.

Live Event Branding quote 14 days for delivery, so we have a few more days to refine a design and get advice from other fans groups before ordering.

Organisation

We need people to pledge their time to get involved with fundraising at the ground, and probably during the summer as well (unless we are very lucky with donations).

I want this display to look impressive and be a fitting tribute to Markus, rather than just a sad looking flag bought on the cheap because we did not make enough effort. How does everybody feel about my earlier idea of creating a massive display to cover the entire Chapel stand? This need not be expensive as we could use coloured card, scarves, or even crepe paper streamers - £1 for an 80ft roll on eBay!

If so, we would need at least 20 volunteers to take in materials and co-ordinate their block. Perhaps the club could be asked to transfer tickets to make this easier for those who want to be involved but have already bought tickets? Please reply if you are interested in this!

Legacy

If the club go for a memorial fund, it would be best to have a fans committee that can gather the opinions of fans and co-ordinate fundraising efforts. If we can decide on a fundraising target (first to meet the costs of this display and then a garden, bench, wall of shirts in the concourse etc) we would have all summer to plan and present to fans at the beginning of next season.

Lets face it, we need something to talk about to ensure this place does not become the Deppo 'comedy' show in the summer!

Agreed. I don't get paid to do my schtick on here in the summer. My contract only covers the football season.

Surely if you go around asking for donations toward it at home games, you'll easily raise enough.

last time someone had buckets for a collection at the club I thought it was silly idea and had no idea where money would go (where did it go?!) and didn't put in. Guess a lot would say same for this

True, did we ever get to see the Save our Saints/Saints Aid accounts - I have always been suspicious about that one!

In this case I am suggesting we lobby the club to provide initial funds to buy the flag, with the promise that we will continue fundraising until it is repaid. While that happens, we could investigate the possibility of a permanent memorial to Markus, and in time perhaps the club/Nicola would be prepared to match funds raised to ensure it happens.

That way we can tell people how we are progressing towards the target, and what their money will be used for.

I think, with time of the essence, you have to get the media involved. You have to let The Echo, Solent know so people know what's going on and get people involved, possibly to help out and quicken the process as well as contribute monetarily.

If there is any money left over at the end, can we put it towards a statue of Michael Jackson?

I think it would be fitting and if some stupid fans don't understand and appreciate such a gift this guy gave to the world they can go to hell.

What about a flag with just Markus "Che Guevara-ed" onto it and no writing? I think that'd look a lot more tidy.

Agree with not going with any cheap option, especially if we're planning to get it out before every game (are we??)

Also agree with consulting some Liverpool fans as mentioned above, they know how it's done!

When sending Paypal money you can click the Personal Tab and select Gift. That way there's no fees. I think it's limited to about a grand a year per account, don't think that will affect most of us here though?

I personally love the Forever Saint flag but wonder if our Marcus might stand out a bit better in White on Red instead of Black? Any chance you can show us the difference using a new pic?

My word. How has this got to this point?

Can we please just let Moke get a price for a big flag and if it can be done for around £500 I reckon we go for the the Walsall game.

Any bigger plans can be organised by those wanting it later but come on people this started as an idea about a flag and now your talking about memorial gardens!

Split the threads and stop being silly please.

agree with this. will be very tight to get a flag organised as it is without all this other stuff clouding the issue.

I am sure that once the design is nailed, price is known and the payment details sorted we can sticky that thread to uncloud it all.

All the points that Squiggly Dan has raised give us not enough time to do this before the Walsall game, there is no way that we can get the club involved with a memorial fund, agree on a design, raise the money (bucket collection at the one remaining home game before Walsall!!). So, we either put it on hold until the 1st home game of next season giving us all summer to get the club on board etc etc, or we look at cheaper options. I am not convinced by the £2000 odd quoted, seems very high for a flag imo. As for the image issue, the club must have the licence to the high res version.

I will wait until I hear back from the Ops guy before suggesting the next move

Getty Images exist to sell their pictures.

Anyone can set up an account with them and buy a picture IF Getty have it on their site.

You just need to go to gettyimages.com and search - hopefully under ML's name but also try under Southampton Football

I would do it but my internet is having a really bad day, I tried but kept timing out before any of the thumbnails could load.

Once you find the picture it is easy to set up an account IF you are a UK resident (can't do it here tried) and then just follow the clicks and order by credit card.

I sometimes get some sent by the Getty guys to me from my golf stuff & they are REALLY high quality 715kb sized files 3000x1137 dimensions for the techo buffs and would blow up fairly well

either way we have less than 3 weeks to the game, with only 1 home game before (for suggested bucket collection) £2500+ is alot of cash to raise in that short time.

250 people pay £10, or 500 people pay £5... of course, it doesn't sound so daunting like that but if we could at the very least raise half of what is needed on here, that'd be a great start.

Well, if there is anything I can do to help, let me know. I'm more than happy to do some legwork if needed.
