Saint Garrett Posted 4 May, 2011 Share Posted 4 May, 2011 FWIW I've just had a spare few mins so looked at the average PPG so far (and for Adkins included Franchise away) for Adkins, Poyet & Clark and then the best and worst result depending on the outcome of the games this weekend For all the bleating down the road about the monkey faced one being the best manager in the division by a mile, they've walked this league blah, blah, blah it shows just how close all 3 are and if the initial 5 games went with the rest of season form we would have got an additional 6 points and been champions but regardless Adkins has (including 3pts at the weekend) bettered Poyet in PPG. Adkins - Current 2.13 PPG, Best 2.24 PPG, Worst 2.07 PPG Poyet - Current 2.09 PPG, Best 2.11 PPG, Worst 2.04 PPG Clark - Current 1.91 PPG, Best 1.93 PPG, Worst 1.87 PPG Anyway, anorak back in the cupboard. What about Dean Wilkins

Of course this doesn't allow for the fact that anyone moving into any sort of new job has to learn fast. As others said (eg Udders) it took Nige a while to get things right. So if you look at the points per game from the time he worked out what his players could actually do vs what he hoped they could do, that average increases to something close to 2.5 per game in the run in. Not important OTHER than it shows he learnt and improved. THAT bodes well as I'm sure we will have some lessons next season. But just imagine, just dream, that for once we do NOT feck up our pre-season and actually hit the ground running.... Surely we're overdue for that to happen Edited 4 May, 2011 by dubai_phil Goddam it must get the roll-up baccy out my keyboard sometime
derry Posted 4 May, 2011 Share Posted 4 May, 2011 (edited) Adkins has a 66.66% win ratio - 26 league wins in 39 matches. Win on Saturday it could be 67.5% for the season. - 29 inc cup wins in 43 matches 67.44% again win on Saturday could be 68.18%. I believe that is an all time record for any manager albeit in the third tier and really only a comparison with last year or pre 1960. Since Christmas 19 wins in 26 games - 73.07%, win on Saturday 74.07% which is unbelievably good. 61 points in 26 games - 2.35 points average win on Saturday 2.37. Started in 22 place with a defeat and a draw and improved from there. The big difference with Huddersfield was the 19 wins against 15 since Christmas. A Brilliant start. Saintleigh Posted 4 May, 2011 Share Posted 4 May, 2011 What if you didnt include franchise away, then what would it be? Current 2.18 PPG, Best 2.2 PPG, Worst 2.13 So excluding Franchise it cannot be worse than Poyet's regardless of Saturdays results.

david in sweden Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 (edited) I don't think anyone would count me amongst the wrist-slitting masochists on here. I wanted Adkins appointed, was pleased when he was appointed and have always believed we'd be promoted this season. But..... I'm not bowled over by a ratio of 2 points per game. QUOTE] well sorry Saint Bobby, but I have to say..there's no pleasing some people. What did you expect? I think that av.2.0 per game must be the best that any Saints manager has ever achieved ?...even Lawrie.. Considering we were in a relegation place when NA arrived, I think it has to be called a great turnaround..don't you? and as for YOUR points tally target...a win on Saturday will put us over 90 points..and even runaway Brighton have finally come a cropper (losing 2 home games) and they won't make 100 points ..and they are CHAMPIONS ! Asa for the part suggesting we playing some sort of " boring football " our goals tally is only betterd by Peterborough (and Brighton ?) and we have the best defensive record (goals against ) in L1. Would you prefer we went out and played kamakazi-type tactics every week, and ended up mid table..or worse, or are you happy that we ground out results and achieved an automatic promotion spot.? A full season at 2.18/game would give us about 100 points, exactly what I predicted for the season. Trouble is I didn't know there'd be a disastrous 4 match Wilkinstime interlude. NickG Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Adkins had easy job: "If you look at Southampton, they were the bankers to win the league, but they haven't, even with the finances that they have at their disposal, their ground and their fan base. "It doesn't matter how much money you pump in; it's just as important that everything works in the right way and we are very pleased that it worked for us at this club - and the reason it has is down to Gus's organisation and way of doing things. "For me there is a marked difference with Gus. Lee Clark at Huddersfield and Nigel Adkins at Southampton are both very good managers - but for me Gus is ahead of them, and up there with the best that there are in this country and abroad. "I believe I could of walked into Southampton and got them promoted with what is there. I genuinely believe I could have done that - but I don't know if I could have done it here, and Gus has made it look easy when in truth it isn't." http://www.seagulls.co.uk/page/Latest/0,,10433~2353554,00.html

You could walk in and get us promoted, eh? Dean Wilkins obviously agrees. And this guy obviously hasn't taken into account off-field issues. What a simplistic way of looking at it.
