Rochdale build up

This will be a tough game without a doubt, but I think some people are making it sound like we will be lucky to get a point.

We should be able to go to places like Rochdale and win and I think we can.

Exactly. It will be tough but there's no reason to expect it to be any tougher than a whole host of other away matches we have won or drawn.

We can win with the squad we have. Jonno quick scored 2 goals and hasnt played since. Encouraging to see morgan running and looks like he will be back soon and dale stephens too. With morgan back our squad will be awesome. Connolly is even fit! Chaplow for me was poor on weekend and has been for ages and hammond wasnt great on sat either. For me the centre midfield is our weak point still. Lambert and barny fine and the centre backs are simply amazing at mo. Love being a saints fan at mo.

No. That means we are allowing Rochdale to determine our tactics. That is a negative move and sets a negative tone.

Let them worry about us, not the other way around.

This is a very different Saints sides to the shambles that played Rochdale at SMS.

It's far from negative as he is Rochdale's stand out player. Playmaker and top scorer. Take him out of the equation as he is so fundamental to Rochdale, that neutralising him will make our chances of winning increase. As we play a holding midfielder anyway and play a narrow diamond it would be no problem to shut him out by playing Aaron Martin on him with two central midfielders playing normally with Guly, Lambert and Barnard in front. If we play 4-4-2 then we we don't need to do it. With the narrow diamond we surrender the wide areas to the opposition and he will exploit that with his passing ability and cause us a lot of problems.

Jones is a good player, but he isn't Xavi or Iniesta. I don't think playing Aaron Martin in midfield would set the tone for a win myself.

All for hearing interesting ideas though.

I'm not proposing that Martin plays in midfield. I'm suggesting he man to man marks Jones who is probably the most effective central midfield playmaker in this division. Take him out and Rochdale will struggle. Let him play and he could cause big problems.

I don't understand your logic, if he's man marking a central midfield playmaker he's going to be (mostly) playing in the defensive midfield position just because of where he'll have to be to be next to his opponent.

Also, I've never seen Martin man-mark, who knows if he could do that ?

He did a good job on Kevin Davies v Bolton. He just goes wherever Jones goes. Whereas a defensive midfielder picks up any threat in his zone, I'm suggesting a close marking of Jones because he is so vital to them. Knock him out of the equation and Rochdale are only half the threat.

Am so badly organised. Been to York for a work meeting this morning (5am start), now in Halifax for another work meeting. Rochdale just "up t'road" but I have a train ticket back down South booked instead of a match ticket and a flaming hotel. Doh

An absurd idea by the way. Horrendous.

Giving a CB a job to play midfield (Whether you like it or not, thats where Jones is, therefore thats where Martin will be ) will nullify our attacking threat as well as theirs. If we really are that worried about Jones then Hammond is more than capable of doing that job, and seeing as thats his natural position i'd much prefer he's given that role than Martin.

Personally as much as Jones has scored some goals this year and is one of there biggest threats, doing a man marking job on him is absurd in my eyes because it hinders our attacking play, creates space for others in there team to exploit and will only help to ruin any shape we might have and cause confusion. I'm sure we have ways of dealing with his threat, and i'm sure they are more than able to execute those ways in a shape which doesn't harm our play and suits us better.

Sticking a CB on him may plug one hole, but it could easily open up others.

In The Alps - no sign of the man himself here in Val Thoren. Hardly any chance of me listening to the game tonight - WIFI very poor in our hiotel.

Weather the last few days been sunnier than Dubai on a good day!! Today low cloud/fog made skking nearly impossible but we managed!!

Going for a narrow 1-0 with Barney in 85th min.

COYS lets nail this 2nd spot.

Have fun tonight boys and girls.

it'll be tough but we have won at all the teams around them, Bournemouth, Orient, Colchester and Exeter, who are all better at home than them based on points per game. No reason why we cant win tonight, although i'd take a draw.

Here is the team...

4-4-2 (Diamond) Davis. Richardson, Fonte, Jaidi, Harding. Hammond, Stephens, Dickson, Guly. Barnard, Lambert

Saints bench: Bialkowski, Butterfield, Forte, Martin, Seaborne, Lallana & Gobern.

Chaplow misses out with knock

Looks sensible, Butterfiled on the bench gives the cover option for CM & RB, not rushing Adam in case. Still no idea what has happened to N'guessan, 4 defenders on the bench & no Connelly. Perhaps Saturday's run around has put him back where he feels most comfy these days? Hope we don't have to chase the game

That bench gives cover for literally every position.

If it makes you feel any better, SKY have reported that the majority of Chelsea fans are stuck in it too!
