bender Posted 9 April, 2011 Share Posted 9 April, 2011 Just back. Great day out. Saints fans were tremendous. First half seem to be all us despite them having 2 goals ruled out for offside. 2nd half they seemed to cause us problems without massively threatening. Didnt play well 2nd half to be honest but looked like we could if we needed to. If we win on Tuesday's then Huddersfield slip up at Charlton next Saturday (and we win at home obviously), it's all over for me.
Plumstead_Saint Posted 9 April, 2011 Share Posted 9 April, 2011 The away end today. Can't make out from it how many were standing/sitting though. Can anyone who was there give a rough estimate? All were standing throughout as far as I could see from the back row. Great atmosphere and singing
The Cat Posted 9 April, 2011 Share Posted 9 April, 2011 Everyone was stood up as far as I could see. Totally professional performance. Adkins decided to protect the one goal lead when he could have moved Dickson to LB and stuck on a winger, but we saw the game out with no real alarms and were very strong at the back. Roll on Rochdale. Win there and we're laughing.

SimonC Posted 9 April, 2011 Share Posted 9 April, 2011 I feel sick after today's latest cock up!! (i'm that half decent Bompey fan LOL)..We had a great day out at Burton last year, looks like today was great for you - sunny day, booze up and a win. Enjoy the run in and promotion celebrations - they don't come around that often...probably the case for both our clubs!! Well, 8th or 9th (where we'll end up) is pretty good really, but you never know what might have happened with a bit of loyalty and a bit of ambition form the board..... Indeed - when you spend nigh on 30 years unbroken in the top flight it is hard to get promoted very often! I wouldn't be too down-heartened. We could beat Rochdale for you on Tuesday and Orient aren't all that. I think your players just need to find some belief again... mind you, play-offs will be tough. Patrick Bateman Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 MoM - The Fans, never stopped - could hear them for the full 90. Well done to everyone who went. Hadn't been to Orient before, didn't realise we would have the whole of one side, support was awesome. Just got in, bit f**ked, brilliant day. LOved the little flats in the corners of the ground and the fact the kids in the one at the top to the left of us were joining in with teh Saints songs by the end, nice one! Thought we did well to weather a storm in the 2nd half, it was mostly them and we were being pushed to fend them off, if anything, our second was against the run of play, but it was a huge goal! We won without Lallana, we won under pressure and not playing brilliantly (Hammond was pretty terrible in all honesty) and that result really should inspire the boys to get up a league. rooney Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 What a great day, whilst the stats show how close it was, we were so clinical in our finishing. Our two CD were immense and they both got everything in the air. The skill Fonte showed with the ball before he passed it to Lambert for Barney's goal was a treat to see. We left the car in a leafy road near Greenford Tube Station and got the central line all the way to Leyton. Passed our coaches around Basingstoke on the way back so that proved to be a good decision. Fan The Flames Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 Players seem to forget you need to be behind two players to not be offside. Peter Hudds draw is definitely the best result, 2 points shared between our rivals rather than 3 and it keeps a win between us and Peterborough, so all in all a good day results wise. LO were the better team in the second half and there were moments when I thought we would concede shortly, so the second goal was sheer relief. We let ourselves down with unforced errors giving the ball away with loose passes, but apart from that we looked good. The pitch didn't help. The atmosphere was awesome, we should be proud of ourselves, we turn up in number, positive support and kept singing for the 90mins. The final whistle celebrations were excellant. The9 Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 Surely a Peterborough win was a better result for us. Nope. The draw means they both drop 2 points, total 4 points "gained" as opposed to Peterborough not losing any and Hudd dropping all 3. With a Peterborough win they're still a major factor, the draw eases them out of the picture a little more, and puts us ahead of Huddersfield which is a huge psychological advantage. The9 Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 All in all, I thought we played alright, with a weakened side we were still good enough to win. Both Orient's goals were clearly offside - and having seen that vid above, the second shot WASN'T going in anyway. Butters got caned by Cox all match long, but Chaplow didn't give him any help. Kelv made two excellent saves, the tip over the bar at 1-0 was vital, the scrambled stop which I think also hit the post at some point kept our 2 goal buffer late on and kept us from nerves. Harding made one excellent decision when 4 yards out with a striker behind him ready to score that he couldn't have expected or known about. You also have to love our squad depth that we ended up with 4 centre backs in the back 4 to head everything away, as all they did for the last 30 minutes was wang it up the pitch. Jaidi won EVERYTHING and kept the heat off, Fonte did the same and brought the ball forward well a couple of times. Barnard ran all day and Lambert was Lallana for us in terms of holding the ball up and showed great composure late on to keep the ball in their half and play in Barnard for the clincher. The only weaknesses were the midfielders who had to pass on a bumpy pitch, and Butterfield who had no support. Ryan Dickson was excellent after twice getting clattered early on. Hammond went 90 mins without getting booked, so the suspension has been avoided. Even Guly, who was quiet, nearly accidentally chipped the keeper from 35 yards when trying to pass the ball out wide to Lambert thanks to a divot ! um pahars Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 Massive result(s) for us yesterday. Didn't play well, but three points in the bag when I would have settled for one before hand and Huddersfield dropping two brings promotion so much closer. Think 4 points from the two games in hand would be good, as think Rochdale will be a toughy. Happy with a draw there (a win is party time). The only problem is I think our other game in hand is Plymouth so will be ages before we get a chance to bag those points. As others have said, all we have to do is match Huddersfiled's points haul over the run, but with the luxury of having two extra games to do it in. They won't win all 5, so the odd point dropped here or there won't be a problem for us. Think I'll be making the trip up to Rochdale now (anyone fancy giving me a lift???). Agree with that - Jaidi was a rock, I don't recall him missing a header, some were extremely crucial near the goal - the guy is so calm, just wish he was a bit younger really. I thought Aaron Martin did really well too when he came on, his height was crucial too. Dickson was brilliant, lovely cross for the goal! Chez Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 Pretty scruffy game with a poor pitch causing a few problems. We were excellent defensively, but our midfield had a poor day. Up front Ricky was superb again and really is back to his best. We are on a roll. I just can't see anyone beating us and that includes Brighton. As last year, the Saints took the roof off and quite right that Adkins applauds our support. Davis 10 faultless. Came for everything and got it. I actually felt calm as you like every time he came. How many keepers do you feel that way about? Butterfield 8 another solid display and not beaten. Got cramp at end, which showed how hot it was and hard he tried. I've not been his biggest fan, I like pace at full back, but he did a very good job again. Fonte 10 faultless. There have been a few games when he didn't play to his high standard, but not many. He's now raising that standard. Jaidi 10 rock. We win scruffy games because he wins almost all long balls. You need a big man and we have the biggest. Harding 8 very solid Chaplow 5 game bypassed him a lot, battled at times, but I felt he needed to offer much more to Butterfield. Doesn't look comfortable at RM Hammond 6 battled but passing poor at times Guly 6 some nice touches but never got hold of the game and the second ball was never ours Dickson 8 Tremendous first half and first goal was all his work, tired at little but gave everything Ricky 9 brilliant touch and vision, offered himself and truely wanted it all the time Barnard 8 worked very hard just want to highlight Ryan Dickson's performances in the last two games. He has been exceptional and for those questioning him and his signing I think he might have shown exactly why we brought him here.

To come into the team after a long time without an appearance and produce these performances show great attitude and skill. I can't remember Saints ever having the level of depth of squad in defence that we have at the moment. Two good full-backs on each side... compare that to James, Skacel and Surman being asked to play nigh-on whole seasons at full-back!
NickG Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 reflects very well on Adkins how he has managed Dickson / Harding Barnard being dropped for a long time then coming back with great form Butterfield / Richardson Lallana / Ox-C out and keeping results going. rallyboy Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 accurate summary from Chez. Davis takes some stick but he is looking really solid, compare his form with some of our opponents' keepers and he looks world class. The two in front are a formidable pairing. Chaplow is out of sorts and we have struggled in a few games but Nige knows this league and there are no points for artistic impression, we are grinding out results with solid and gutsy defending. I don't care whether we look like Brazil or not, I just want three points each game. As for Orient claiming that two obviously offside goals is some sort of indication of being in the game - we could all run up the other end and score, the art to it is to do it legally, and their second bloke doesn't understand the basic laws. I was in line with both and they were clear cut and correct, pity that linesman didn't have the whistle, we might have had some more consistent refereeing. Was Barnard a bit naughty? Yes, that's why he got booked. Does a bloke swearing and throwing a fag at a player get my sympathy for his poor family getting abused by a nasty player? No way. Try throwing your fag at Rooney and see how long it is before you're allowed in a ground again. Were two searches going in to the ground really required? Pity they didn't check us on the way out, we all had three points about our person by then. Slightly concerned about the way our squad is taking a battering every game but hopefully the rotation will see us through. And thanks to those that found the other half of my sunglasses after we scored - the smoked glass monocle look really didn't suit.
